Kindle Fire..Anyone Else.

My two are yet to ship, September 30th order yet people from mid-october through mid-november are reporting shipments this morning with arrival dates of tomorrow  . Mine are stuck on "shipping soon". Hoping they make it out tonight!

P.S. Also miffed that the so-called "free month of prime" only applies if you didn't buy Prime in anticipation for your Fire's arrival... I bought it just a day or so ago to get the two-day shipping & have it good to go once my Fires arrived, yet the fine print states some bull about how you have to have not been a subscriber in the past year... I figured they'd just add the extra months onto the end of my new sub. I'm pissed.

Not really. They're only $200 and I'm pretty sure they'll be loved unless there's something wrong with them. In which case they can always be returned.

Yeah, I'm going to do so in the morning, Oldie :).

My two Fires still have not shipped... and they show delivery of as late as November 21st, despite having 2-day air shipping and a Sep 30th order date  . Still seeing tons of people saying they had ordered as late as yesterday with standard shipping, having already gotten theirs shipped for delivery tomorrow or Wednesday... :(.

I put in for overnight on mine and ordered October 8. No idea on yours.

It looks like all six of mine just got here. I don't have the time to open one right now, I'll update later on. :)

OK, tore one open...I can say for some reason downloads are VERY slow right now...it's trying to grab a software update and it's taking forever. I've got a 50/50 connection so it's certainly not on my end. Testing a video feed though I could navigate that very quickly and the picture quality was great...might just be the appserver getting hammered.

Hahahah, so wifi speeds are fixed after the software updated, no more issues. One thing I discovered though, I had purchased Samuel L Jackson's reading of "Go the Fuck to Sleep" on audible awhile ago, and one of my kids started playing it because it showed up on the available content list. :p

I guess I'm going to have to clear that. :D

Nice.... mine just now shipped with a ups pickup time of an hour ago. Looking forward to getting them. Lol on the audible book!

Waiting for real consumer reviews on the Kindle Fire before buying one. I never trust pre-release reviews.

Mine arrived today but I need to wait until I get home. I'll have to see how I like it & give my own feedback for everyone that's curious.

I LOVE IT. Just unpacked mine. It's beautiful. Setup was a no brainer. Wifi connected right away, update was fast and smooth. All my books loaded up right away. Video loads very fast and looks great. I have to say for me the browser is very fast and I have yet to see lag. So far it's a big winner. Oh, I also have an Ipad. Just saying. Web page text was to small for me but I found in the settings you can change that. My Apps loaded up right away and so far no problems....Angry Bird, Facebook and Pandora for right now. I say it's a buy if you were on the fence.

Thanks for the impressions! Looking forward to seeing others' as well and receiving my units.

OK, so we've gotten two out so far. Like I said earlier, I had a slow download issue when I turned on the first one, but I think it was just some server side lag, the second grabbed the update in a few seconds and both are running at full speed.

So far I'm pretty impressed. I've used a bunch of other tablets and the responsiveness of this is pretty skippy. The browser is quite decent, I was on [H] with it and it looked and worked fantastically. I've tossed on a bunch of apps and they're all working very well so far, though a few clearly aren't optimized for tablets..but that's not really the fault of the fire. Also, speaker quality is a lot better than I expected. I mean it's a tablet so don't expect much, but it really wasn't bad at all.

At any rate, first impressions are that it's going to be great for what I got it for, basically just a toy to do light web browsing, watching movies, and play mobile games. I'll try to get some photos up later.

If you have any specific questions, shoot them over and I'll see if I can answer.

Agree. And it's definitely easier to carry around than my Ipad.

I say yes. I have none of the problems they were talking about and really it's a slick machine.

Could one of you please try streaming x264 content over your wifi network from another computer?

Can you just browse the local networked shared content and click play? Will it play 1080p content smoothly? How does it look? I'm interested if the picture quality after the downscaling and smooth playback. How about sound?

I'm really interested in either the Fire or Nook but I want it to have this capability. Can the Kindle Fire do this?

Also, do you guys have any kids? I'm interested in the interactive apps for toddlers and availability. Are there a lot of kids books/ content?

There may be a way, but certainly not stock. I'll load a video into the memory and see what happens.

Well I can stream MP3's from my network shares with ES File Explorer, I think playing video will be possible too, it's just a matter of finding the right format/player that will allow streaming.

The Netflix app is up on the Amazon app store now. It looks pretty decent and there's an entirely new UI for tablets out that we got before the iOS sheeple. :p

Sitting on the couch right now playing with this. I'm going out on a limb here but I have to say I'm going to love this more than my ipad....if only it had 3g ...sigh

I just made this for someone in the Genmay thread, figured I would post it up here too. Just showing the responsiveness of the Amazon instant video:

Video Link ~7MB

...the iOS sheeple. :p

Don't mean to sound douchy ( or start a flame war) here, but how is a locked down version of Android less sheepish than iOS?

I'm particularly interested in the Fire, because I'm looking for a decent seven inch to replace my orignal Nook Color. But $50 more is looking to get me volume buttons, double the storage and removable storage on the B&N front.

I guess I'll wait for some comparison reviews.

Sarcasm detection is a good skill to have. ;)

I agree the Nook has a lot more going for it. I'm mainly getting these for the wife/kids and some older relatives, so I wanted something that was just stupid easy to use. The Kindle fulfills that.

I see.

I primarily use my NC for mobile video and that's about it so really the added features aren't huge for me (the storage is nice, but I can think of very few times when I watch more than 6gbs of video that's been encoded for a 7" tablet). If the nook tablet isn't as nice, or has the same hit or miss hardware that was with the original NC, then I'll probably go with the Fire.

This holiday season is going to be expensive. One of two competitive 7" tablets, a plethora of game, and the possiblity of picking up the Transformer Prime, so good yet so bad for the wallet.

Even on my rooted Droid I only ever found one way to actually stream x264 content. I had to get a program called CIFS manager to mount my network share as if it was on the Android file system itself. Then any video player app would play network content as if it was local.

I will try to install CIFS manager on my Fire tomorrow but I doubt it will work.

I will say that Playon works on the Fire, so I can stream my content but it is actually transcoding it, not streaming it directly.

I am overall satisfied but not impressed with the Fire. I have had at least 4 random app/browser crashes, the touch controls are often unresponsive, specifically the software back button having to be pressed multiple times for it to register.

I want to get my hands on the Transformer Prime myself. Will pick up the keyboard dock as well. Afterwards I could then pick up a 32GB microSDHC card and a 64GB SDXC card which would increase it's storage capacity to 128GB.

Going to look at this and the Nook Tablet this weekend. My wife really wants one, but won't let me touch it. :( She mainly just wants an e-reader with internet capabilities. Leaning towards the Fire now mostly due to price. Would love to get 1 myself to play around with, but this x-mas is going to be tight on the wallet.

Mine should be here this weekend (I'm still mildly pissed that I pre-ordered the day it was announced and it is just now shipping today). Main use is for web browsing and streaming 720P from my plex server.

I really wish you could have two amazon accounts tied to one kindle though. I have a ton of apps on my account, but it's going to the GF who will want to buy books/etc on her account.

Sounds like those pre-release reviews were FOS.

You mean the ones done by the apple loving press? Did you expect them to like it?even if they did like the Fire they want to be invited to the next Apple event and big brother doesn't take kindly to glowing reviews of competing products.

You see that's just the thing, I don't see these as competing products in any way. If anything, having cheaper lower featured products similar to the ipad available is a good thing. It gets people interested in the medium who would never consider plunking down $600 for an ipad. After they have some experience though and figure out how much they like tablets, they may be willing to invest more for a higher quality one.
