Kindle Fire..Anyone Else.

I saw in an google ad. as well as elsewhere, that there is places like bidcactus.com, where you can bid on a iPAD or kindle at 8% of the price, are they real? Has any1 win 1 of these

How many of you know that if you need to replace the battery inside the iPod or iPAQ or Kindle Fire, it can be very expensive?

HP charges $120 to replace the battery of the iPAQ. And those are polymer battery, you can't replace it yourself

and for that matter, why do those co. have to make those embedded battery? Why not build an user replaceable battery?

Units that don't have replaceable batteries can be made lighter and cost less and are harder to break. Frankly, if you get lit-ion batts then by the time you need to replace them your device will be obsolete (hopeful, anyway). I'm pretty sure my stuff will be. :)

Manufacturers don't want you to hold on to your device for 5-7 years.... they want you to upgrade every 2-3 years. Hence permanent batteries instead of user-replaceable batteries. Forced obsolescence. Cynical, I know. But I made my peace with this argument several years ago with MP3 players.

The Sandisk Sansa e2XX series was a mp3 player with a user-replaceable battery that was probably the most popular PMP outside of the iPod. SanDisk's successor to the e2XX made the battery permanent- and SanDisk ceased making OEM batteries for the e2XX.

I raged over that for a long time...but that's where the entire portable device industry is right now.

paying $500 for any iPod or even $200 for kindle and last 3 yr. is crazy. Imagine my old TV back in 1991 is still working, eventhough I switch to LED LCD last yr.

The battery in the kindle is replaceable.

I did customize mine a bit ;)

If I can help anyone out let me know, or catch me over at XDA, I am highly active over there with the fire.

Vashypooh, how easy is it to root the kindle fire? I am considering to buy my first android tablet. Am debating if I should buy a kindle fire and then root it (to CM7 maybe)?

Will I be able to use all apps after rooting?

Thanks!

well I ordered a fire for a christmas present and have heard nothing but bad things from friends.
1/2 of them say this
SLOW, surfing is super SLOW. Screen is bouncy and not stable broken graphics in movies ETC

1/2 say oh its ok for a 6 yr old but if you want to do everything you need an IPAD, or at least android 3.2 or wait for 4.0

can someone tell me what you can do on an ipad you can't do on an android or a fire?
is it just apps don't exist or is it some limitation of the os, hardware or ???

I do agree with one thing on all this, since its a 2.7 android that is modded by amazon. IT IS OLD OS

ps I read that CM was not updating anything else until ic sandwich was done. I guess they are all working on it or something.

A joke. If you can't follow the instructions posted, you don't belong on [H] however, if you need help there is an IRC channel I hang out in (#kindle-fire on freenode) where if you get stuck you can dump me teamviewer access and I can help. I have unbricked ~43 kindle fires so far from silly users, and have no issues helping you :).

All apps? Not quite. There are some apps that the kindle doesn't see in the market, but will work. This has to do with how the device is seen inside of the market, as developers are able to choose what requirements for their software are, and the kindle falls in-between.You can get around this by downloading the apk on a phone or other means, and installing it that way. A lot of changes that are made with CM7, CM9, and some build.prop tweaking are resolving this rapidly. Also, while rooted prime video streaming doesn't work but uou can use a root hider or so to disable root when you want to do that.

How long does it take amazon to fix all the problems that the news media reported?

Amazon is releasing patches ~ once a month. So they are fixing very fast actually.

Most people are idiots. With a little bit of tweaking, you can be running a regular launcher and the google app store.

Take a look at this:

andriod-market-insights2.jpg

  • Slow? The kindle fire is a 1ghz dual core, easily overclock-able. It's plenty fast.
  • Surfing Slow? Amazon silk is a bit annoying, I didn't like it so installed Dolphin HD browser that I always use on android. Fast as shit. Pages are loaded super quickly. (This is on Cm7 and a default Kindle OS)
  • Screen bouncy? Not sure what you mean, the screen is beautiful and very responsive.
  • Broken Graphics in Movies? Netflix works beautifully on the device. I never did give prime streaming a chance though.

CM is completely stable with only 1 bug at the moment and there is a fix for the bug posted for someone who cares. The kindle just uses a wrong MAC address. Otherwise, yes development has shifted to the CM9 tree, which is ICS.

I would say what you are hearing is iOS idiots who don't know what they are talking about. Enjoy the device. It is amazingly solid, and fast. If you want more, drop CM on there and you will have even more power. As far as what you can do on an iPad that you can't on kindle fire, you can feel your wallet being a lot lighter, and have a bigger screen.

That's honestly about it.

Hopefully I answered most of the questions.

thanks for the answers and all your post here Vashypooh.
One friend has an ipad and says everything is SH#$ but the mac. EVERYONE ignores him so its no big deal.
2 have samsung's and say that everything is crap because of their apps.
1 has an HP and its going back a third time. It just doesn't seem to keep working.

I am sad the fire is only 7" and not 10" but I really think by next Christmas the prices will be half (where they should be now) and with new hardware and os's by then I will either throw it all in the can and shout what a WASTE of money or get a new one LOL

I've got an iPad and a Fire, and I think comparing the two is just silly. I paid ~$750 for the iPad and about $200 for the Kindle, it's like complaining that your Ford Taurus just sucks compared to a BMW.

The Fire is an awesome and useful device for the money. If I were trying to do work or do some heavy web surfing on on one or the other, the iPad would win hands down, but for an entertainment device the Kindle is a fantastic deal, and you can do some limited productivity tasks on it as well. It's also lighter and easier to carry around than the iPad.

In stock form, there's plenty that runs well but no its not plenty fast across the board, web browsing on it stock isn't fast at all. Not saying it can't be improved with hacking, just my experience with an in-law's that I used for a couple of hours in stock form.

If you think the current Kindle Fire should be half the cost that it is now, that's crazy. For $200 this device is amazing. It has a strong processor and an IPS screen. . . I guess it doesn't have much local storage, but that's because Amazon wants you to use Prime and their cloud storage.

The choice was actually going to be so simple for me--buy a Nook Tablet because it has slightly better internals and expandable storage. Unfortunately the Nook has a locked bootloader, and is proving to be very unfriendly to hackers.

I'm going to wait for christmas to come and go and see if the Tablet modding has taken off, and if it doesn't seem to be gaining any ground I'm going to get a Kindle Fire.

Well most consumers are under-informed and make decisions in minutes. I would say any of these devices has about 10 minutes in a consumers hands to make an impression. In those 10 minutes a consumer is either going to be impressed or let down. Sounds like he is let down and should move on to another device. Most consumers don't even understand the technology they have available. Most of the people that would get to this site, find the forums, register and post are more informed.

Silk is not the best system ever invented. Try it again using Dolphin.

ok guys I have a dead one.
Took it out of the box, won't turn on, yep plugged in the power and all that NOTHING.
Amazon says its dead send it back.
I am trying to get a cross shipment and they said let me send it to whoever and they will contact you.

My typical luck lol

ok should I get another one or go find an hp touchpad and get that instead.
MAN THIS SUCKS

Dude...just order another one and ship the dead one back, amazon will refund you. way less hassle than finding an hp which is dead-end tech anyhow. You can fix this in one day and it's not really that big of a deal to wait a day or so.

I talked to the guy at Amazon about my bad unit and he said a little too much.
It seems that they are coming out with a 9.7 in version with sdcard.
after he said that he clammed up real quick. Whoops LOL

+1. Good to know. I might get that one. I was thinking of a Nook Tablet as I really am not into watching movies on a tiny screen (which I think is one reason to get a fire over a NT).

Did you even get to the 'Kindle Fire' splash screen?

It seems Amazon sent out a new update after Christmas and it's bricking alot of units. I don't know how widespread it is, but mine just bricked today (It was working fine Christmas day). It's in an endless loop at the splash screen on boot right now. There are instructions to manually fix it by dumping the update image over USB, but from what I'm reading most who figure that out aren't having much luck and sending it back to Amazon (some permanently).

The problem is serious enough that Amazon customer support, from what I gather, would rather you send the unit back and let them fix it. I'm gonna try and manually fix my unit soon as I'm comfortable it's charged up enough.

My Kindle is a launch unit, and this is the first issue I've ran into with it. So I might as get this out: What the hell, Amazon?

Just got a Kindle Fire, can't wait to mess w/ it. Charging now.

What do you lose going with the CM?
