JVC harx700 - a poor mans ath-a900!!

I'm total noob when it comes to headphones. Question is that is it safe to assume harx700 is equal or better than HD555? since it's very comparable with A900? Reason I'm asking is that I was originally going to buy 2 HD555 for me and my brother but it would be big saving if I would go with harx700.

Thanks

ive had the hd555 and wasnt impressed. highs were ok, its comfortable. bass didnt reach very deep. i kept them only about a week. i prefer the jvc's

HD555 = budget open headphones; A900 = one of the best closed headphones out there. They aren't directly comparable, frankly, I am tired of people comparing the HD555 to everything simply because it's the most expensive headphone they've ever tried.

ha ha probably every noob like me comparing cause that's what I came across most of times when I was searching. Since I can't afford A900, I might as well as go for HA-RX700.:)

The 700 should be the buy here. So long as the 900 is almost twice the price there is no reason to go there. All I can think of is slightly more control and bass impact. We'll see about the sound stage and directional sound.

I think it is worth researching the 900 because it's still well under $100, which I'm sure fits the budget for a lot of people who think it is still a cheap alternative. They just wonder how good it is in proportion to the 700.

My question is, with closer and closer similarities being found between harx7000 and ath-a900, would the A900 still be worth buying for those considering? I mean, going from less than $50 to perhaps $200 is rather steep.

I'll be able to tell you that pretty definitively. I have had every audio technica headphone under $500 so far. The AD900 is pretty different from the A900 btw. I expect the X700 to be about 80% of the A900 which is damn good for $34.

for an audio nut it would be worth it. for most peeps its just too close. the harx700 get better every day with burn in -especially the bass

Let's try not to call this the "700", it confuses me.

ATH-AD500, ATH-AD700, ATH-AD900 [Audio Technica open]
ATH-A500, ATH-A700, ATH-A900 [Audio Technica closed]
HA-RX700 [JVC closed]

I think it'll be good to compare the A500 and A700 to the RX700. It's about half the price (or 1/3 of the A700), but most people just skip the A500s because they are so wildly different from the A700 and A900.

$200 is nothing in the headphone world. It's a bargain considering the quality of the set, and the fact that it sounds amazing unamped.

I just got mine today. And WOW!

I'm not as audio-inclined as spaceman or ourfpshero, ashmedai, or any other audio specialist on this forum, but wow... These sound great to me, and this is coming out of the front panel connectors of my x-fi gamer. I don't have trained audiophile ears or anything, so I can't give a really great review, but I might as well leave my feed back on these so far.

I played the War Pig stage on COD4, and wow. It was like a whole new game to me. I heard things that i've never heard before. I heard guns and rpgs being fired from a great distance a way, like that squeal they make when they're first fired, Idk if i'm explaining that right, but it was definitely a distinct sounds that i've never heard before. Also, everything just sounds more real. It was just an amazing experience. It was an IMMERSIVE experience, theres the word.

For music, I listened to a couple songs and they sound great as well. It wasn't as dramatic as when I was playing cod4, but was still great. Again, i've heard things I never knew existed in the music. I guess songs somewhat more detailed? I don't think i'm hearing the full potential of these rx700's though. I've only burned them in for about 6 hours, so yeah.

This concludes my mini audionoob review.

We were once all "audionoobs", as you put it. :) Soon, you'll be joining Head-Fi. Next thing you know, you're curled up in a corner with bloodshot eyes and thousands of dollars worth of audio equipment, wondering how you got to this place.

I'd like to throw the blame at ashmedai, spaceman, and ourfpshero (and a few others like Mr. Wolf and Joe Average... can't remember them all).

Absolutely. At first I was just buying random speakers, whatever happened to be cheap...but sooner or later maybe you stumble onto something that's enough of an improvement that you think "hey, there's a lot of music here that I couldn't even hear before!"...at that point, you're pretty much screwed, sooner or later. :D

But really, I just know a little of the physics behind audio because I think it's awesome, and I hang around here (and Head-Fi) too much. You pick a few things up. Head-Fi meets are also awesome to go to...keep an eye out for one in your area, you will end up meeting interesting people and hearing a ton of gear that is really, really bad for the wallet...and some that's not that bad and still pretty sweet sounding.

Like these HA-RX, apparently. I don't expect them to go trouncing any $200 headphones, but at the least, maybe these can firmly dethrone the Koss SB40 for the entry-level.

This is the worst. You go to a friend's place, or maybe you meet someone new. They show you their fancy audio gear, then bam! You go home and look at your own stuff in shame, you can't go back to this petty listening experience once. What's a guy to do? Your electronic manhood has been humiliated. Time to fork over your credit card number and upgrade.

i am extremely glad u like them. now disconnect the front panel connector from your x-fi gamer and plug the headphones into the back. listen as your power doubles :)
the x-fi gamers front panel connector 1/2s the power output *whether anything is plugged in or not* go creative labs....

Yeah the front panel is super gimpy. You will be really happy using the sound card itself. Much more impact and definition.

i'm an audio noob but i'm wondering how these compare to my Senn HD 500 (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD500-Traditional-Full-Size-Headphones/dp/B00004SD87 and http://www.truesoundlounge.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=004588). these are probably 6 or 7 years old and the pads are worn through but otherwise theyre in decent shape. retailed ~$100 at time of purchase. i know these are open and im not even sure how that makes it sound differently than closed, but would these JVCs be a nice upgrade/replacement or should i stick with my aged Senns?

btw my Senns are extremely comfortable. in my darker days i once spent close to 8 straight hours gaming with these on and didnt take em off once. how is the comfort level of the JVCs?

Senn 500? lol

Those are comfortable true. That is all the good things I can say about them. They are so old that the headphones they replaced have been retired for over a year.

Get the JVC and enjoy a 100% improvement. You might be a bit hotter but the sound is so good you won't notice.

So spaceman, what do you think of the HARX700? I'm guessing you got a chance to test them out for a little while now.

I was about to bug him also but wanted to give im some time for burn-in ;)

lol

They are on the train from Cali. I do not expect to have mine until next week maybe. Since the headphones were put on the train Tuesday, it will take at least until Friday if not Sat to get here and then they have to sort it and then drop it off.

If I had known buy.com was located on the west coast I would have bought from somewhere else or paid for faster shipping. My bad.

My bad, I thought yours had already shown up. I should have mine tomorrow. How do you guys recommend burning these things in? My Zero probably wont be here for a couple of weeks.

Just use them. No "burn in" process is going to do anything prolonged use won't. Whether they'll benefit from it or not, using them will accomplish the same thing either way. So use it.

When I get new headphones, I just plug them into whatever I have handy and let them run at normal volume overnight at least before I listen to them. They just need a bit of breaking in. Some need way more than others but by 200 hrs you pretty much have broken them in.

Just got done listening to Led Zeppelin II on these, never sounded so sweet to me!

I've decided that I definitely prefer these over my HD485

Just ordered 2. one for my bro and one for me. Thought I found lucky to get ebay and live.com deal for like $22 but found out seller doesn' t have paypal option. lol. ended up getting it from buy.com with 5% off and ebate 1% rebate. now it's waiting time :)

This is gonna be my first post, even i have to go through all the trouble and register i have to get this out of me.

How can you going around recommend these cans without even heard of it in person?
and you sounded so firm like "This is the best you can get for under $50" , or "this set will beat XXXX hands down" which all you based on is the OP's comparison.

I've personally ordered a set and hoping it will come close to the A900 after seeing it on head-fi, but i wouldnt dare to poke around and make it sound like having first hand experience like you did

which brings me to believe "What you hear from the internet must be true"........

sorry this has to be my first post
ok end of my rant

EDIT: oh yeah this is from after observing and reading many threads in the audio forum, by the way this my first and only account I have here

Because Spaceman says so!

Welcome to [H] I am also on head-fi.

i understand my Prof dont' need to be at war to teach history
or you dont need to blow up your house to learn chemistry.

but sound is a Subjective matter, if you go spreading around info and even recommending them which you don't even have is a little beyond ridiculous.

I will be with much more respect if you did it AFTER you receive your set

I am going to end here though, and let's hope the RX700 turns out be as good as we read

I believe it is because spaceman trusts ourfpshero due to much dialogue between them about headphones and how much they tend to agree on sound.

Is your professor a geopolitical territory??? That would be awesome. He's just a walking, talking sovereign nation.

It is exactly as Alai stated and due to the responses so far. This one in particular is indicative of a clean headphone.

If this was a $2-300 headphone I would wait until I heard it. For $30, with these responses, I feel safe enough recommending them. I tend to be right about these things.

I am also dead sexy.

Well, I got mine this afternoon, and as a casual user, I thought these'd be a good replacement for my old platronics headset. This is my first review ever..

Sadly, they don't come with a mic like i'd like, but since my old headphones only had a busted side, I cut off the mic and used it as a desktop mic.
These things come in a GIGANTIC box. No wonder the shipping is normally pretty damn expensive. It comes in a box about the size of a mATX case, seriously. Lots of paper wrapping, and it looked very secure.
Right off the bat, I noticed the 6.3mm/standard connector was a screw on (for all those that wanted to know), and was gold plated.
I stuck it right into my computer, and listened to some rock and country. MUCH better than my old platronics hs. I found it to be about as good as my parents' sharper image speaker system, which is pretty good, because that thing is expensive as far as speaker sets go.
Then I took it into CSS. Directional hearing is awesome. I could seriously pinpoint which door the enemy was coming through, and when. I had the best prefire, people were calling me a hacker. It was awesome. :)
Anyway, I totally love these headphones and for $30 i'd recommend it to everyone that needs some headphones.

The only problem I have (its my comp, I know) I get this very low high pitched noise when i'm not listening to any sound, like between youtube videos, when loading a map, or between songs.
Not sure what this is, but my computer has been like this always. I think it has something to do with my case, because even after I changed my mobo, the sound is still there. Just a thought. Micro Fly cases are a bit strange, I guess.

Get a soundcard, USB or otherwise. That should fix your problems. I use my E-MU 0404 and Turtle Beach Audio Advantage USB and I get no hiss.

I've got an old Live! PCI card.. but I dont know if it will work in X64. Might as well try.. But is it really better than my integrated sound?

Are you sure yours have a screw on 1/4" adapter? If yours have one that's not fair because mine isn't a screw on, just a normal push on adapter.

SB Live! might not be much better or at all.

You get a cheap Turtle Beach Audio Advantage. Mine was about $30.

EDIT: If you do install the Live! card, keep maximum volume under 80%. Also might need modded drivers for Vista x64.

Yes. The noise you are getting is probably emi from the interior of the case. The sound card should be an improvement over onboard sound but may not eliminate the noise due to its unshielded nature.

Mine is confirmed to be a screw on 1/4" adapter. I just re-checked it :p

I might just stick with my integrated until I can get something better. For sub 100, what do you guys recommend? I know that the creative cards and vistax64 have been getting lots of flak, so I might want to stay away from those..

Depends on what you will be using it for.

If you want music or music/games or just games.

The Auzentech Prelude and Asus Xonar are some sub-$100 cards I can think of.

E-MU 0404 is a classic pick that works well for music. Not so much for games.
