I can hear myself typing now.

It definitely, definitely was not worth the noise. Its been running for 3 months now, I am glad I finally pulled it.

it is pretty quiet at 3000rpm via a fan controller and still moves a ton of air.

My first weeks so far with a 92mm tornado.....the noise dont bother me anymore......im also grabbing a fan controller soon to slow it down.........im not overclocking at the moment.....

i've been running two of them in my comp since my brother got his computer. that was around june last year. i don't conciously hear the fans anymore:p though i am switching to watercooling in about two days (leak testing now, and then i'm too busy to switch right away)

exactly what i thought. i can accually hear the hard drive working aswell. i put up with the tornado for over a year. even with a fan controller. it was a relief when i finallly switched fans. i find myself more relaxed at the computer now. :)

My tornado only lasted 5 minutes in my case. Then I made a hovercraft.

lol

try a 92mm Panaflo, even at full speed its not nearly as loud as a tornado, if you set it at 60% it's completely unaudible and my temp only rises like 1 deg with it at 60%

I had 2 for about 10 months. Then I switched to Thermaltake smart case fan 2. It blows about 5 cfm less than the tornado at max. But it's adjustable. Rais it when you're gaming for max fps. And turn it down when you're just browsing.

I just about bought a Tornado before ever hearing one but I made the monkeys at the computer store hook it up for me first. Good lord was that thing annoying.

Zalman CNPS all the way!

hahahahahahah

I just bought one for my shuttle... and after bending 4 mounting tabs in the mounting bracket, turned it on.

OMG is this thing loud!!!!!

hahahaaah

I had to hear it for myself, and well.. i'll never doubt the [H]ard members again...

vantec 3.5" fan controller was purchased within 2 minutes of booting my computer up.

it wont come fast enough....

..when my watercooling isn't active (like.. the greater part of the last year) i use a 92mm tornado on an AX-478 heatsink..and it doesnt bother me a bit..

I did the same thing after while. I bought a rheobus and connected the tornado to it. It quiets it down. But the tornado is just so powerful that the rehobus didn't quiet it enough. I think the vantec's are rated at a high enough voltage to support the tornado. I don't think my rheobus was.

mine lasted a week, untill we put it on the oil cooler in our auto-cross car.

LOL

You guys that can keep tornado's for more than a day amaze me. I mean, wow...

I had one, lasted for less than a day... Heck... It was less than an hour.

-dB

now that i am on watercooling, the loudest thing in my computer is the two 40mm sunon fans i have on my NB/Vidcard. those things = satan.

i'll have to try that hovercraft thing. think two could lift an emachines psu? or is the psu too weak to power them anyway?

WHAT??? I CAN'T HEAR YOU WITH THIS TORNADO RIGHT BY MY EAR!! I THINK IM GOING DEAF, I'VE Had it for six months - dang, i can hear again now that i shut down my comp for awile

Thos Tornado are effective. I tried one 92mm on my Slk-948 and it drop my temp by 7c compare to my 69cfm Panaflo. But the noise makes it not worth it.

I had/ have an 8cm Tornado & I feel the pain. I replaced it w/ a TTake SmartFan1, the 2 being too close to the Tornado in CFM/ decibels (@ max rpm) for me to avoid a possible post-traumatic shock incident. It is rather bizarre to hear the hard drive whirring (didn't realize why ppl actually bitch @ Newegg reviews about hd noise until now). All I can say is that hd noise is the sweetest sound I have ever heard (off to Newegg to post a review as to how quite the 120gb JB WD drive is... :D). The Tornados are rated @ 9.1 Watts (8cm) & 12.5 Watts (9.2Cm) respectively. I know the Nexus can handle this, as each channel can support up to 18 watts. I have seen other rheostats that were rated much lower (some under 6 Volts) and others w/ no info---I would not go w/ any of these controllers, as the Tornados are quite the wattage suckers. W/out a controller though the Tornado is only useful in taking up space in my spare parts box. I am dead serious that I would recommend a watercooling kit (e.g., Koolance) over any of these high cfm fans...they will surely raise your stress level, blood pressure, damage your hearing & cause bizarre lucid dreams about blowing up 1000's of plastic case fans. 'Least that's my take....anyone wishing to defend these beasts, my advice is to live w/ one for about a year...you'll be forming a local Anti- Tornado Advocacy group...mark my words. ;)

yeh, i definatly had my share of deltas back in the day...louder than tornados I reckon. Thats why my Antec quiet PSU and zalman are so shocking to me :D

The deltas are not louder decibel-wise, but that whine...argggggggggg. On my 8rda+ I had an 8cm Tornado (the Sunon version) & a Y&S 6cm screamer (that was slighthly higher cfm/rpm/decibel than the deltas) on the northy. I also have 3 120's (2 are panaflo, tg) & all the 120's are on a 4 gang baybus. In total (including gpu fan, hd cooler fans, etc) I had 18 fans going, including the Y&S/ Tornado combo. I now question the ratinale of the line of thought wherein I even considered this as a viable plan....I've yet to reach a conclusion b/c my mental ability has been impaired by fan noise. BTW, I am now setting up a water cooling system for my system... ;)

I wonder if you could push enough air to make a Shuttle actualy float....
The Tornados will almost float their own weight...@ least the 8cm will. My bro & I bridged a psu & hooked one up on top of my washing machine. It would almost hover (it tried really, really hard). I had a SmartFan1 jump off of the same washing machine while trying this trick. I had jumpered the sensor wires, cuz the sensor got torn off, so it was running @ 53rpm. I fired it up & it pushed itself right up and off. Then, like a fool, I reflexively, caught it. Middle finger went right into the blades breaking off 3. I've heard that these high cfm fans would draw blood...well I had no blood, but had a good brusie to show for the effort. The plastic housing for that fan is now my template for cutting 8cm fans in cases.. ;)

I have one on my case - I don't mind it too mcuh..

Though, I do have a fan controller on it's way to turn it down a bit.

And I also just ordered two more. I am going to hook them up to my DP-102 heat sink, and splice both together to connect to the controller..

Yeah, a heatsink with two 80mm tornados.. I'll post results as soon as everything's in.

I bought some Delta fans for my new case, but I'm not sure I'll ever use them. The 80mm 50CFM Sunons should be just fine I think.

I read an article once referring to a guy who tried to stack 2 delta 60mm's, according to his results (and other stuff I've read) stacking 2 fans offers little or no improvement:

I must be a Gawd then cause i have 2 92mm tornados and 1 80mm tornado all in the same comp....nice cold computer and i actually like the noise...helps me sleep :)

that's kinda strange

Except that I only have 1 92mm and 1 80mm, this is also me. The noise of the Tornados is soothing and also helps to block out other sounds around the house.

I'm eventually going to go watercooling (I technically have the money right now but am waiting to see about a couple of things) and I'm not sure how I'm going to sleep with the Tornados out. Since I probably won't need them I won't run them. It will definitely take some time to get used to. I can barely sleep when the power in the house is off because I don't have the sound of my fans lulling me asleep. And no, this is not a joke.

you guys are nuts....

i had the tornado on one night and out it came.

I couldn't hear my tv or my wife and they were both 4 feet from me... it was crazy!!!

at night i closed the bedroom door.. i had nightmares of being in the server room at work...

no thanks...

i'll give it one more try if a fan conroller slows it down to a workable noise level... otherwise, into the pile of parts it goes.. maybe i'll have a need for it on my car one day..

I 2nd the nutz eval....:p Different strokes I guess. If you really love the sound you could just bridge the green and black wires of an old psu & set up the Tornados to blow on ya @ night. ;) Sheesh....I would need a morphine drip to sleep thru that----I would havta turn off the computer in my front room so I could sleep in my bedroom (back of a mid-sized house) w/ the Tornado churning. Esp. if I left the door open.... @ 1st I thought the sound wuz no big deal, but after ~ a yr. I just go fed up---silence is golden is the old cliche & I adhere to that like a devout Christian exiting the premiere of Passion of Christ swears by the gospel. :D

I have 2 120mm 40dba 105cfm fans, 1 92mm 50cfm 25dba fan, 1 92mm 45dba 105cfm fan, and one 80mm 45dba 75cfm fan.

My computer screams. I dont know the models of any of my fans except for the 80mm, its a Smartfan 2 I put into my PSU to replace the stock fans. When I had my old case (3 Smartfan2's) my case was so god damn loud... people at lanparties would tell me to turn my comp off if they sat next to me.

Also, Ive got plans to mount 2 80mm fans onto my SLK900U in a ^ shape so the air will hit the middle. It will be sweet... Im in the process of making the bracket.

I had a Tornado for two minutes. Been sitting in a drawer ever since. Before that I had a Delta Black Label, that high pitched whine is forever implanted in my brain. Really. I can hear it right now. AHHHHHH!!

I'm buying a fan like a tornado, thermaltake 80mm. It moves 72.5CFM at 48.4dBA, while the Tornado moves 84.1CFM at 55.2dBA. The only reason I'm not getting a tornado is because it wont fit ontop of my shuttle, it's too thick.

Can anyone recommend me a 60mm fan that will move ALOT of air? I don't care how loud it is.

The 60mm fans are going into the side of my shuttle, but if 80mm fans will fit then I'll buy those.

I'm also buying a Fan Controller.

Wooowee.. well. Some words of caution to you guys who are looking to make your systems silent:

Once you start. You will NEVER stop. ;)

Every time you make your system "quiet", you'll always find a new source of noise.. your ears will adapt.. and you'll keep going all the way until it is literally 100% passive. Don't say I didn't warn ya :D

this is so true, its been a month or so and the quiet bug is infecting me already. once i took the fan down for cm led series (~25db) seemed super quiet. now like __Maad___ points out, i find my ears adapting and thinkings its too loud again, its strange.

That is true.... I find I am alwayz switching the 120's now to 7V...quiteness is addictive. The 120's on 12V (even the high cfm Sanyo-Denki Ace) don't really bother me that bad---more of a roar vs. a whine. It's the high pitched whine that causes Excedrin moments. ;)
I understand the Tornado (& other screamers in the same category) are designed to push the envelope of air cooling, it's just the price one has to pay is too much, IMHO. Watercooling is a better solution & a good watercooling setup is not that expensive anymore. I look @ watercooling in the same way as a well modded case (airflow-wise)---it's something that can move from one system to the next, w/ perhaps a minimal investment in a different waterblock. It's not really money thrown away b/c I can set it up on a socket 939 system down the road. I intend to still use my Tornado (have it mounted on a Speeze Falconrock now for a backup system). But I'll definitely have it wired into a Nexus.
