Ok....so....Overwhelming support in these forums for the dual core processors, so it looks like thats where my money is gonna go. I still have a couplee questions....what should i get....

Opteron 170

or

Athlon 64 x2 3800

And are the opterons, more powerful, and aree they also 64 bit?

well, the opteron will beat out the 3800 and feel smoother, the 170 is basically waht you would call a "4000" X2. Yes it does support 64 bit.

so what is the general difference between the opterons and the X2's
The name.

Opterons are the same, just all of them have 1mb Cache per core.

Get w/e is cheaper. You won't notice the difference in cache. If you are looking to overclock opty is a must.

What kind of overclocking can i get out of thee opteron 170?
Well it will hit 2ghz no problem..

It depends on the chip.. never know if you get a dud that only does 2.2ghz.. or a dream that will do 3ghz...

it all depends on the money you want to spend. a 3800+ is cheaper than a 170, but the 170 has more cache.

it also depends on how lucky are are feeling, I have been having good luck with the X2's I have 2 3800+ and they are bouth good OC'ers.

1 is at 2.81Ghz with 1.58 volts and the other one is
at 2.65Ghz with 1.52 volts, but not all X2's OC very well and almost all Opty's are good OC'ers

you have to pick you poision and hope for the best

"feel" smoother? *scratches head* I have to disagree with you on that one.

I'd recommend you get the x2 as its cheaper and still overclocks very well, the extra cache with the opteron isnt worth the extra $100. If your going for the best possible overclock however, your luck is better off on the 170.

What about

Opteron 170 2.0ghz

or

Athlon X2 4200 2.2ghz

There both similar in price....

I guess the X2 4200 would be the better buy....

What kind of wait time am i looking at on flickerdown??

Opty 170, or 3800+. 4200+ is a waste of money when overclocking. Personally I would go for the 3800+.

Not completely a waste of money. You get a higher multiplier which might help on HTT limited boards and an extra 200mhz head start at stock speeds.

htt limited usually only comes into play around 300mhz htt. at 300x10 you're at 3ghz, not an issue.

I'd say more around 280HTT, but 280x10 is still alot for a dual core :).

Opteron 165, Mines doing [email protected] volts on the stock heatsink dual small FTs Prime 95. Still working on Blend due to my OCZ UTT. Any DC Opteron should be fine. Just make sure to get the 546's as I have seen all these do 2.5-2.6 easy, then after that its all gravy.

Right now is a great time to get the amd x2 3800 simply because they are very low in stock of them because of the high demand. Thus amd must put the higher quality say 4600s and label them 3800s and change the multiply thus you get a great overclock x2 3800 :)

im looking to get a new cpu .. currently i have a opty 150 that does 2.95 .. but if i could get a dual core that does 2.6-2.7 i would be very happy .. should i go for a 3800+ x2 or a 165 or 170 opty ?
