What hardware does it take to get a windows experience score of 7.9? Without overclocking?
 
I doubt it's possible without overclocking, but mine is 7.7 overall, 7.8 cpu.
 
Weird thing is my HDD score went from a 6.2 with a standard WD HDD to 5.9 with a new SSD (which is noticeably faster).

CPU & RAM are at 7.8 (2600K not overclocked, 8 GB Corsair Dominator). Graphics are at 7.1 each with an ATI 3850...

I'm wondering since I have my Libraries and user profiles on a standard HDD and my Win OS on the SSD if it's not putting the test file on the old HDD?

So close to 7.9 and when I finish this watercooling loop, I'm sure I'll hit it easily.
 
WEI means something?

News to me. Does it unlock cake? If so I might have to try for 8.0, I want cake. Otherwise, its a worthless #. My RAID0 gets a 5 on the HD index, but so does a single drive. Its stupid, its fail.
 
It takes the lowest score of all the subcategories. HD speed should hardly bring down your overall performance like it eludes to. My i7 rig is given a 5.9 because of a normal platter hard drive. Video card is 7.9 and everything else is 7.4

And like stiltner said... WEI means nothing.

You would waste much money chasing a 7.9 score. This is from a while ago:

“Microsoft program manager (and blogger) Scott Hanselman attempted to build a computer that was fast enough to reach the 7.9 limit,” Microsoft revealed.

“For his supercomputer (which he dubbed “GOM,” or God’s Own Machine), he set a $3,000 limit and bought a six-core processor, a GTX 285 graphics card, and a low-voltage desktop memory system with 12 gigabytes (GB) of RAM.”

“Yet he still only reached 7.8. "Getting to 7.9 is possible, but man, it’s not easy," Hanselman said. "For now, until off-the-shelf things get faster, you’ll need some experience in overclocking, possibly a RAID disk array, and a lot of patience. Truly, if you get over 7.7, you’ve got one of the fastest machines out there”.”

Even with an Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition 3.33GHz the CPU score was only 7.8. The SSD used to get a 7.9 was a Crucial RealSSD C300. It's possible to hit 7.9 easier in several of those categories now (memory, graphics tests).

What's funny is that the WEI scale may go up to 8.9 or higher in the next version of Windows.
 
It gives me a 6.4 on my 6950, probably cause its running Eyefinity and the stupid score doesn't know what to do.

i.e. I told ya its garbage

why pay the extra for the k model and not overclock it? i see people with 2500k and 2600k's at stock? that is the dumbest think ive ever seen.
 
Mine is stock until I feel like overclocking. I don't get the issue?

Highest score for me is the 80GB G2 SSD at 7.8. Everything else is 7.6-7.7.

Mine is stock temporarily until I get my WC setup done. Just building an external case. Have all the parts for it, just don't want 120V unprotected.

2600k @ 4.2ghz
AMD 6950
16gb DDR3
128gb Crucial SSD

It's also the fastest stock clocked of each respective tier. So.... buying the fastest thing is the dumbest ever? :p

Mine's not too shabby. Should hold me over a while til Bulldozer gets here.

WEI isn't a benchmark. It doesn't measure how fast your system is. It only measures whether your system is fast enough.
 
It is a benchmark, since the scores are based on task speed, but it has adjustments made. For example, there are maximum scores in memory depending on the amount installed. HDD speed also has maximums for mechanical drives. It's not worth stressing over. A system with a lower subscore can be faster than a system in those tasks mirroring usage of that subscore.

my 2x2gb gets a 6.9
my 4870 512mb gets a 7.5
my intel ssd 40gb had a 7.4 but went down to a 7.1 last I checked for reasons unknown.

any body else had degrading ssd performance?
 
LOL, my laptop's score is held back by the desktop Aero "Graphics" sub-score. I'd normally brush it off, but power management on the AMD GPU is so messed up (gets stuck in high speed mode, AC or battery) that I demand a higher score. :p

I haven't, but I don't use mine as a boot drive.
