ok heres the deal, a couple weeks ago my motherboard died (an asus k8n). i believe the memory controller was at fault, but the ide controller might've gone down with it. (memtest found tons of errors on every compatible stick of ram i found in the house.. i dont think so.)
since then i tried plugging the drive into an external enclosure. the drive would be located by windows, show up in the device manager, but not give itself a drive letter, nor show up in Disk Management. i then tried plugging it into an ide cable on a spare computer (but not booting to it) and the same thing happened. now i got a new motherboard (one of the few that i could find on the internet that still supports agp and socket 754, go figure), an MSI k8n neo v2.0
the same thing happened, so i bought a new harddrive, installed windows on it, and ran tests on the drive with various pieces of software. every test that was able to process, stated that every last sector on the drive was 'bad'.
my question is, is there anyway to get the data i had on there back?
it was a western digital 120gb IDE cavier.
thanks

oh, just to clarify.. with the drive softwares that i was using, most of them recognized the drive but none of them detected any partition on there or anything

similar thing happened to me... strangely enough when i plugged in the drive while running ubuntu it showed up as partiioned and formatted and i could access my data... but your situation is probably a bit different. you could try using spinrite, supposedly good for data recovery.

hm, i have a live cd somewhere around here ill give a try to tomorrow. ill also try spinrite. thanks for the quick reply

no dice, spinrite didnt recognize it, and PCLinuxOS recognized the harddrive in the hardware config but didnt see any partition or drive letter.
hmm

no luck with 'byteback'
it couldnt find the MBR, and upon further testing it gave a 'could not read disk' error.

looks like a logic board swap is in order.
anywhere besides ebay to find a drive/board for cheap?

Just for shits and giggles, try GetDataBack. Get the fifteen day free trial. If it "sees" your files you'll hafta pay to actually recover them.

tried it already, nice try though haha

hm i guess this data is lost forever (unless i decide to pull a board swap:eek::))

hmm i dont think i actually ran fixmbr on this specific hard drive, ill have to try that today. yeah ill try the freezer thing too (i did that on an old harddrive, got it to work for a good 20 or 30 seconds :p)
what i dont get is that if the board is dead, then why, when i plug it into an external usb encloser, does windows recognize that its a disk drive, as well as its model number, then says 'your newly configured hardware is ready to use'? youd think that if the board was dead that it couldnt recognize that kind of stuff, hmmm
