I just can't see the game going 3d....
 
I played FO3, New Vegas, and FO4. I ran the extra DLCs for New Vegas and FO4 and thoroughly enjoyed the content.

I only briefly played FO1 back in the day, but it wasn't my style at the time. The open world nature of the first person games really hit home. I think New Vegas had some solid writing in it.

I am not certain if I can recommend jumping into FO3, but heck if it is on sale or free as part of a monthly subscription I say try it out.

At this point the "new 3d fallout" games are old. FO3 came out in 2008.

Did you just recently play FO1 and 2?
 
3 is an Oblivion total conversion, nothing more. 4 is better, but they aren't really sequels, just nostalgia bait.

Which can be fun, but there are a lot of better western RPGs out there. Have you played the KOTOR games? Jade Empire?

Fallout and Fallout 2 are 3D oblique projection, not 2D. Fallout 3 is decent, but it's hard to escape the Elder Scrolls origins especially due to the ambient music, NPC behavior, and quest structure. The writing isn't nearly as good as the originals. It is still fun to explore if you enjoy the Bethesda open world formula. It's hard to argue 4 is better when the map is smaller and more compressed while it also abandoned any semblance of being a RPG much like Skyrim did for Elder Scrolls. New Vegas is by far the best of nu-Fallout. I'm currently playing through Fallout 3 again for the GFWL achievements now that I got that version working again.

Only connection between Fallout and Wasteland is developer Interplay Entertainment. Interplay co-founder Brian Fargo created the Wasteland series.
 
I started in Fallout back in the late 90's with Fallout 1 and 2. Great games for the time. I didn't give the later Fallout games a chance until recent years.

The prices are pretty inexpensive for these, so I would encourage trying them out.

Fallout: New Vegas - great experience, top 25 games all time for me. Played through twice.
Fallout 4 - liked the graphics but didn't get as much mileage out of it. The base building was ok, but that isn't why I play Fallout games. Never finished.
Fallout 3 - enjoyed a complete run and a partial run, definitely worth a try.
Fallout 76 - tried on a free weekend, didn't work out for me.
 
76 is the black sheep of the series, but it does pick up and get really good over the long haul. It just starts out very slow...or at least it did before they started rolling out a pile of updates to it.
That said, if you consider any of the 3D games to be new, it might overwhelming.

Chris avallone for one worked on fallout 2 fallout new vegas and wasteland2, there might be more, it's been too ong.
 
Ya Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games because it was my first Fallout game and the discovery of new lands and places was thrilling and fascinating. At the time the graphics looks awesome. I want to give Fallout 4 a playthrough but it's time consuming.

A bit unstable without mods, and a bit rough around the edges without mods (no ADS!), but it actually holds up well despite the fact it's built on an engine that wants to crash every 10 minutes if given the chance.

Yeah, I prefer the classics, but the 3d games (I haven't played 4 because Beth decided to update and break *everything* after I started my playthrough) hold up well.
 
I played through 1.7.0.3 last night for 6 hours straight without mods and without issues.
 
I played Fallout 3 years ago when it was still a constant crashy mess. It seemed like I was hitting save every 5-10 steps in some places because the crashes were that bad.

I played through most of it without mods except for a mod that added a bunch of new music that was era appropriate. For the most part I had fun as long as the story was going. The world felt quite empty and exploration wasn't all that interesting to me because of that but the story, as short as it was, was interesting and worth playing.

I've yet to play either of the two earlier Fallout games so I can't say whether you'd like 3 or not. From everything I've heard they are very different types of games and some people who really liked 1 and 2 didn't like the change.

That is my extent of playing in the Fallout world. I didn't have much interest in 4 and despite the rave reviews I still haven't played New Vegas. I've owned New Vegas for years but just never have installed it and played it.
 
Fallout 3 is good, but I remember needing to use a community patch to get it to run consistently the first time. When I revisited it more recently, it seemed to run pretty well, so it must have been fixed on Steam. New Vegas is really good, and it'd be the one worth trying IMO if you were to only try one 3D Fallout.

Around Rivit City is where the game tends to be the most unstable.

I have a stability modlist I run with as a baseline that was pretty stable when I played FO3 last year, though there was an inherent instability that still resulted in a crash after a few hours. I can post that list if anyone's interested, since it helped a *ton* with stability.

TBF, Script Extenders plus Community Patches (plus other stability mods) are generally recommended for *every* Bethesda game for stability purposes.

NV is better due to things like ADS and just doing "more". Its story and the choices you can make also puts it ahead.
 
As others has motioned, mods/patches are really essential for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The last time I played them was with the Tale of Two Wastelands mod which allows travel between the maps and makes it a great single playthrough experience IMO.

But as I grown older, I find that I enjoy the quest style (or maybe the bleakness of it) of 1 & 2 more than the never games or Bethesda games in general.

And I would say that Fallout 4 is my least liked title, as it just feels hollow - lots of content but not much depth. It is most likely nostalgia, but it works better for me with the "fixed" 2D maps. I could imagine that all of the other stuff needed for survival was just behind the scenery or off map, while in the 3D games I've to cope with a lot more suspension of disbelief - "Yes, you seem like live here - content with two carrots and a chair. Wow you have a skeleton in your bathtub!".

So my real suggestion is to try Fallout 2 again with the Fallout 2 Restoration Project.
 
FO3 is my favorite because it brought me into the Fallout universe. I bought a physical copy one evening and ended up playing through the night till 6am. I remember exploring place after place and just couldn't put it down. Most people cite NV as their favorite, personally I think it's the worst of the bunch and it's not even close.
 
Buy/pirate it and find out? Because only you can answer that. Otherwise it's pretty well regarded and New Vegas is even more so.
 
I can see New Vegas as a favorite/least-favorite Fallout game. The game pushes you along toward a pretty specific route (whether you like it or not) and it's less of a free-for-all when it comes to exploring the map. On the other hand, it does have more/better choices compared to all the other games. Compared to anything else Obsidian has made since, too. The characters and setting are also probably the most memorable of the bunch. Boston, DC, and West Virginia could really have been set almost anywhere outside of very specific areas. There's no mistaking where you are in New Vegas. I liked some elements and disliked others and I completely understand feeling the opposite.

I was excited way back then because I thought it would be.
It sort of is, but the gunplay isn't great and you lose out on spells, and there aren't nearly as many NPC people to mess around with. So it wasn't as fun for me. Still a good game though.

Shooting in the game is fine. It's a RPG unlike FO4, so you need to level up your weapon skills. The Lincoln Repeater and Victory Rifle have perfect accuracy when you get small guns to 100.

Having wildly inaccurate guns until you spend hours leveling up wasn't fun to me.

I guess this was wrong(ish), though there is apparently a FO3 remaster in the works.
