Is Blizzard Making StarCraft 2 Free to Play?

I am uninterested in playing with the hordes of Brazilians, who are not much better then a race of subterranean rat men, spamming "BR? BR? BR? BR?", "HUHUHUHUHUHUHUH" AND "FUCK AMERICA FAG" even when they play on Euro F2P servers. They are the bane of every F2P scene. Ever.

Haha, do they really do that? That's pretty funny actually.

For you I guess. I hate watching golf, but it still attracts millions of viewers. Different strokes for different folks.

But I mean, what for "mass market" people who watch the Superbowl. Are they really going to sit down and watch someone person building a base and grinding resources? It's just some guy playing a game you could just go and play instead.

From what I read it wouldn't be the full game, it would be solely some level of the multiplayer. They're doing this almos exclusively for the e-sport scene to compete with f2p League of Legends and upcoming f2p Dota2 from Valve. There are large markets(china) who aren't touching sc2 multiplayer because of the cost and are sticking with the f2p games.

I actually enjoy watching sc2 games, even after I stopped playing. The biggest problem I have with watching them is besides mlg, a lot of the big tournaments want you to pay to watch.

I don't know, maybe it's just that I play more FPS than RTS, but I find the Argentinians worse than the Brazilians. There's a few Brazilians that actually seem to have some concept of how to play. I've never met an Argentinian that had any clue about what's going on in the game they happen to occupy.

This is why the new Command & Conquer game may well suck (I haven't played the beta yet so I don't know for sure), but I'm sure the micro transaction stuff relates to better units, and more powerful upgrades like Mammoth tanks/walkers. Maybe that's why they are looking into it, since that's where another RTS legend is delving?

You need to stop playing Battlefield: Falklands :p:D

lol...this game is a competitive sport that is played for millions of dollars a year. They are not going to allow you to get an advantage by paying more. This is simply a way to see if the millions of people playing the game would spend more than they currently make by selling the game if they offered some features for a small fee. Something tells me it would work. LoL makes tons of money because of the massive player base. SC2 has a big player base, but it would certainly be much bigger if there was no cost to entry.

Noooo! :p

Almost all "e-sports" are just boring to watch, RTS especially.

have to agree...

although one of the ones i can watch is League of Legends...

games aren't terribly long, and in the pro games even the earlier slower gameplay is engaging...

They could always use the F2P model Namco is using in Japan

Here’s how Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation works: the game is completely free to download and play, but limits the amount of time that you can play each day. You can play up to three games for free every two hours. Each game lasts eight minutes. Once you’ve used up your three free plays, you need to wait two hours before you can play again. All in all, if you’re persistent and don’t mind waiting, you can play up to 12 games a day, completely free of cost.

However, Unozawa revealed, a surprising 75% of Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation users are actually paying to play the game and avail its various services.

fucking RPG and single player cripple newbies

Definitely a difference in culture there. I remember going to Disney World in in January, I figured kids would be back in school so I could see what the park was all about without dealing with massive crowds. While there weren't any crowds one commonality that I read across multiple boards before going was beware the Brazilian tour groups, the flags will warn you!

Sure enough... flags... farther than the eye could see. Loud MFers too when the group mentality kicks in.

Guess I am the only one who see this as a great idea... :)

I brought the game on day 1 of release and been playing it a lot since. If Im not mistaken isn't starter version of starcraft II already free to play? Also this article mentions Startcraft II and not any future expansions.

If this goes free to play it will be a buy to play version and a free to play model.
Free to play will consist of 2-5 Single player Campaign, Missions and Multiplayer. (All units available)

what is not included in Free to play will be:

-Decals / Portraits
-Multiplayer Arcade
-Custom Matches
-Whole Single Player Campaign

Blizzard will never sell any upgraded/bonus to units as this is a E-sport and it will completely ruin the game series.

This will only bring new players to multiplayer. Attract more people to E-sports.

I agree with the rest of your comments, but this.. I am not sure. Who will this really attract? People who don't want to pay. We have the Starter Edition for anyone who really wants to check out the core gameplay. That model works well.

I really would hate to see a swarm of spamming n00bs on the 1v1 ladder. I have had my share of BR?BR?BR? HUEHUEHUE thank you very much.

This all sounds like pressure from other franchises who do f2p, like LoL. I don't mind LoL, but I'm not sure that I want to get the crowd Blizzard would be siphoning off that pool.

I have a sinking feeling this has to do with the upcoming MMORTS, End of Nations, which is actually pretty good by the way if going by the closed beta.

And, I would not be surprised it's partly due to the upcoming Command & Conquer Generals 2 games which is going to be online only thanks to stupid EA.

I can vouch for End of Nations. That game is fun, fast paced, and flat out fun! And F2P as in cosmetic only. It's published by Trion Worlds that also published the MMO Rift.

If it's true, it may become the first Blizzard game I play. I just won't give them any money.

I'm brazilian and I approve this post.

It's very embarrassing.

I played with some Brazilians in my Aion guild and they were very good and helpful. They never complained unless they were forced to play with bad players. To be exact I remember one that dated a tennis pro that said he didn't like playing with useless Brazilians because they sucked at games. But like I said the ones in my guild were the shiznit.

Now I played BF:BC2 on a Brazilian server and I had better latency than them. Needless to say I owned them all day and night but I never got bad feedback other than "You got me again".

1.5 million sales in 2 days is people being cheap?

Lol, no. That's my point. The crow that actually paid to have the game shouldn't have to have it cheapened by all the people who don't want to pay for it and just want it for "free."

"...big problem of how to monetize the game"

Ah-ha.

Ha-ha.

Hahahahahahahahahaha. :D

Blizzard...having a hard time figuring out how to monetize a game.

Hahaha.

This makes no sense...
Anyone who played Starcraft II multiplayer knows that there are only 4 words ever spoken in EVERY game.

HI
GG (goodgame)
GL (good luck)
HF (have fun)

if you want to count those as words. no matter where you from its always the same.

very rarely you do get a:
one second
go?

from those who pause.

Starcraft is not the kind of game you chat on when playing a match.

We may be talking different universes here. Do you actually play ladder in a lower league? Because if you do and you've never gotten chat spam, you either don't play much or are just very lucky.

I know the conventions of SC chat, but if you really think people keep to that on 1v1 ladder, I don't know...

Use to be a time when people bought Blizzard games no questions asked.

That time has passed I believe.

Blizzard, going full retard again.......yeah, ruin all your games.

huh? Why would anyone chat while playing, I don't get it. I've been playing Quake and StarCraft for about 15 years and chat with game in progress has never been big in either.

Anyway, sounds like Brazilians are America's (fuck yeah) equivalent of Russians. :D Their women are way hotter, though. Would never bang one of those fat ass latino monsters.

The worst part is making this pay-to-win.

I will say it now but I fucking hate pay-to-win games.

If I see some Siege Tank with "Increased deployment speed (-3 sec.), increased range (+15), and increased splash damage (+500)... for $9.99" in a cash shop of some kind, then Blizzard can kiss me goodbye and can kiss my ass.

I don't want to play online against some person who's willing to shove cash down Blizzard's throat like a blowjob in a porno just so that person can beat me in one minute thanks to all the cash shop units. That's not fair to anyone and anyone willing to pay-to-win are nothing more than cheaters.

Agreed , pay to win games are horrible. I don't care how great the game is , I will not "pay to win" period , end of story.

So hackers can now hack with no repercussions because they can just get another free account?

I always against making games free 2 play. F2P games suck and are a waste of money.

What is really going on with Blizzard nowadays.

1. They made SC2 a three part series instead of 1 (obvious in the game that it was split last minute).
2. D3 is a flop because they initially wanted to make it an MMO and pretty much dismantled Blizzard North.
3. And now a F2P SC2??? That's ludicrous..

... only answer.. oh wait it's not just Blizzard anymore.. its Activision Blizzard

Coincidence?

Not a coincidence, false cause fallacy if anything.

For example, WC3 was the first Blizzard game that I wasn't into and didn't give me the same vibe that SCBW and D2 did. A couple years later they released a subscription-based MMO to rake in even more money and now it's becoming the biggest cash cow they ever created. Therefore, I blame the exodus of notable employees of Blizzard North in 2003 because of it because it happened to be the only major negative event that happened around that time period?

Rumors fly around as to why those top execs left Blizzard to pursue other plans, but I doubt anyone will argue that there were things going on internally and where the company wanted to go in terms of their games and profitability. I think it's the goal of any company to make money and profit, but at what cost?

In terms of WoW they've rehashed the same models over and over.. released expansion after expansion. A lot of people have moved onto other games such as GW2.

SC2 got the three part series treatment, as already mentioned.

D3 has more focus on RMAH, still doesn't have a PvP which baffles me to no end as the D series never had an end game BUT pvp, lol.

One things for certain, times are changing and Blizzard isn't the same as it once was.. some say for the worst... we can only hope that they don't implode in their own starvation for profit.

Ever since Star Trek Online went free to play the game went to shit. Now they have drop boxes that spam the screen and in order to open the box you need to buy a stupid key from the zen store.

You have the slim chance to winning a OP as hell ship and in addition a toy gimmick console that normally ruins PvP. The carebears normally love most of it though. STO PvP has been neglected far too long, cant want until oct when new FPS's come out.

I know Brent plays STO, but I dont know if he PvP's or not.

Brent if you see this I am crimson from Sad Pandas ;)

From my understanding it is not SC2 they are making F2P... it is only part of it, enough of it to allow people to play Blizzard All-Stars and try to compete against DOTA2 & LoL...

it's been a constant battle between blizzard / icefrog / guinsoo hell they even started with the name of Blizzard Dota until valve/icefrog got the trademark, now it's blizzard all-stars and whadya know ... that's the name of the biggest dota fan site (created by one of the riot co-founders).

They blew a pretty big pile of barf with D3, I hear.

And yet, just 10 years ago, Blizzard was the company that shelved Starcraft: Ghost. Something that had poured a ton of time, money & resources into, but yet it didn't meet their expectations. Thats what made Blizzard a AAA studio back then.

Diablo 3 was shamefull. The game has been out several months now and still no PvP. Not that I care for PvP, but this is something that was extolled about long before the game came out. And it still is not in the game. My dissapointment with Blizzard, was that they sunk to using the "patch" system as a way to sell an unfinished game.
