Hi guys,

In your experience, which method would be the ideal way of pre-ordering the new iPhone 4 this Tuesday the 15th?
Apple Store reservation, Apple Store Online pre-order or AT&T Store pre-order?

I'm not crazy enough to duke it out on the 24th, so I would like to pre-order instead... but which method will give me the least hassle and the fastest delivery. Thanks.

i have never pre-order before, but want to...

if i pre-order at Apple do i need to give them my phone number or something so they know what my ATT upgade status is?

also I will not be in the county until July 1st any one know if i can pre-order and then pick it up on the 1st of July?

this is intended to add on to the OP's question and not thread jack.... seemed to be a good idea to use this thread as a Q/A about pre ordering and getting [H] members personal experience...

I'm sure the Apple online store is equipped to handle upgrade transitions for existing customers, so I'll probably be taking that route unless I have something else I need to do at an Apple store at the same time (I try to minimize the number of trips I take to that place). Like the iPad, I suspect that Apple will be shipping iPhones overnight for arrival to customers on the 24th.

I'm sure AT&T would let you pre-order and pick the phone up after the 1st. They held my iPhone order for a couple days after it came in, so I don't see why they couldn't hold it for a week or so.

I think ideal to pre-order online as Apple has agreements with carriers for it to arrive on/near launch day. Unless you want to stand in line... and something might go wrong and you would have wasted your time heh

I pre-ordered the 3GS and got the phone on launch day at my doorstep before 10:30 am, I expect the same deal this time.

I'm stoked to pre-order mine!

You provide them with your number and the last 4 digits of the SSN on the bill if you're not the only one on the plan etc.. it worked great last year like I said.

It seems Wal-mart is also getting in on the action this time. If you want to avoid the Apple store rush but still want to be able to go out and pick up the phone, pre-ordering with Wal-mart might be a good option.

Whats the process like using the apple online store rather then the AT&T store?

I WISH i had a pre-order here in Canada. Hells I would certainly do it.

Anyone know what the new iPhone4 will cost outright? I have an OOOOOLD promo plan from about six years ago; I pay $39.99 for unlimited everything (text, data, airtime). So I am not wanting to upgrade and loose my plan.

I think 599 but you need a special iPhone data plan so they will probably make you switch

Special iphone plan? I have had iphones before on my plan. I currently have a Blackberry 9700. I am debating between a slightly used 3GS since the prices are falling on them or a new iphone4 depending my money situation.

If you use VisualVoicemail you should have an iPhone plan (required to enable all features.)

Alternatively though if you don't need the vis voicemail, google voice works great. However AT&T have been known to adjust plans based upon new devices being used with the sim.

If you're an existing iPhone user, I would say the ONLY way to do it is to go in store at an AT&T store. You go where they won't screw over your old $30 unlimited data plan.

Thanks for the input guys, great suggestions thus far...
For those who pre-ordered online Apple Store and got it delivered to them, how was the registration/activation?
Since the new AT&T data plans are coming, I don't want to give up my $30 outdated plan... I hope the online activation would not mess that up for us.

I'm currently on my dad's family plan with AT&T with just the extra line for $10 a month. If I pre-order on the Apple Store website is it as easy as simply entering my number? 0ptional said I'd need to give them a SSN, my SSN or my dad's since that's who the plan is with?

Think ill lose my unlimited plan if i do it online?

Just the last 4 digits of the family plan main person, that's how it worked last year and it was seamless and you get to pick your plan and such in iTunes when you connect it up, but you can use it to replace an existing phone in the same manner as well.

No idea, you don't choose plan info till you connect it to iTunes, and when I did the 3GS for my Moms upgrade/account last year (then swapped sims, gave her my 3G had the 3GS was for me) it was a new iPhone on her number so I had to pick the data plan, not sure if an upgrade will allow you a third option of 'continue with my current plan' but AT&T said on their Twitter that it wouldn't be any problem to keep it even if getting the new phone.

I'm not taking ANY chances.

I want to keep my unlimited plan as well and I might even go so far as to JB for tethering but I haven't needed anything from the JB world for a long time and wish tethering weren't an added expense, that's so ridiculous to me, if I use more data than I'm allotted on my usual plan but with a notebook, then just charge me overages, don't charge me to use something I already pay for...

I am going to be at the beach on Tuesday thats why I want to do it online but I am worried about my unlimited plan. I guess I could start going through the process online then turn back if it makes me switch my plan right?

I guess my biggest question would be that I just bought an iPAD, so why would I shell out $600 for an iPHone?

I will be an online pre-order as well. Unfortunately I'll still have to head to a store to pick up a case and screen protector.

The language in that doc is a bit cryptic, isn't it? By "exchange" do they mean "upgrade"?

For those who preorder from att.com and have it shipped to home, can we just swap out our sim or do we need to go in?

Pretty sure the new iPhone uses a smaller sim card but they should just send you one in the mail then you call to activate it.

Cool, thanks!

Anyone know what time the preorder is expected to be available on att.com?

Any idea on if I can do this?

Preorder Iphone 4G w/ a new family plan with 2 other lines and phones. I dont want the plan to start until the Iphone 4 is actually released

Probably from att.com, but not from apple.

Thanks for this, I think I'm going with AT&T online preorder... I need 2 to replace my 2 3G and retain my $30 data plans.
Based on that PDF, they recommend having your preorder delivered to you, which makes sense since the stores would be swamped regardless.

+1 on the time question, I live in NY (EST)... 12am tonight sounds too optimistic :)

Was your post meant to compare an iPad to an iPhone 4?
Or were you asking legitimately why would it cost you $600 for an iPhone 4?

If the latter, I'm guessing you can get the subsidized price if you open a separate line for the iPhone. Assuming that you have an iPad with a 3G data plan.

I'm flying to Vegas on the 24th so I'll probably go get in line at the AT&T store. I'm just not sure the phone would get to the house in time before I leave if I do an online preorder like I did with my 3GS.

preordering on att.com sounds so easy, plus they'll ship it right to my house! I'm upgrading from the 3G so hopefully they won't screw up my data plan, FAN discount, etc.

If you pre-order from Apple.com to have it shipped to your house, do they charge your credit card when it ships or when you pre-order?

They place a hold for the amount then charge the day before it ships.
