I"m torn between these two..
First of all I have been using a cricket phone for many years now and never have a smart phone.

I want to treat my self and my wife, so I've been waiting for the Iphone 4 , but then ATT slap that 2GB bandwidth limit.. well I'm a big user of youtube, hulu and other steaming video sites.

I really like the features on Iphone 4..such as tomtom apps, cameras etc..it's a heart broken that I may go with Droid X

What do you guys think? Will Iphone make it to Verizon next year? eh:confused:
 
Verizon is going to get rid of their unlimited bandwidth plan at some point as well, but the Droid X has GPS built in, a camera, etc. Also the nice thing is that Android apps can duplicate or replace built in features so you don't have to be tied to stock apps. One thing about the Droid X is that there is some crapware built in, but a simple root can deal with most of it.
 
The Droid X has Google navigation, so you don't need tomtom apps. The thing about Verizon going with tiered bandwidth is still a rumor right now, and on top of that they may grandfather in unlimited bandwidth users like AT&T did.


I just went from an iPhone 3Gs to a Droid X, I can wholeheartedly say you should just skip the iPhone and get the X.
 
What about the Droid 2? is it going to be better than the X? should I wait for that or go with the X if i take this route
 
The Droid 2 won't be as powerful as the Droid X, but if you need a physical keyboard I guess it makes sense. Personally I hate physical keyboards and the extra screen real estate the Droid X provides makes both the regular multi touch keyboard and swype that much better.

Wow that is lame. I have the Motorola Droid, and I love it. Why in the world would they keep the phone looking exactly the same (for the most part) and then change where the home key, menu, and back key are located.
 
Droid 2 is a hardware refresh and removal of the "joypad" thing.

I had a iPhone 3G and a RZR. It was a love/hate relationship. I'm in the NY metro area so 3G is avail and is decent, but at home (where 3g is advertised and isn't avail) its a dog. It was great on Wifi though. There were many times where I want to throw the through the wall.

Another thing I believe that may sway you is if you play games. I really don't, but I had Peggle on my iPhone and my friends kids want to play on it till it died.

I hate using iTunes to manage my music, contact, apps, etc. I used MediaMonkey, but with the constant updates I quit using the phone for ipod use (I have two iPods). Another fight was the constant cat/mouse game with jail breaking. Another reason was the "withholding" of certain features and releasing them at a later date (great Apple tactic) - ie picture messaging.

Above all, it depends on how you use it or intend to use it will dictate. I now have a Droid X and love it.

Agreed. I know this sounds ridiculous, but when I saw a 10 year old with an iPhone (now commonplace in some places) I wanted to puke. Glad to be off that wagon. I got a captivate recently and I love it. The screen is fantastic, both in terms of size and clarity and as I get to know it more, I really enjoy it.

the new swipe keyboard software you dont need it any more it works amazingly well
 
OP, even if the iPhone makes it to Verizon next year, which I doubt, the Droid X or Droid 2 can do anything it can do. The Droid 2 is shipping with Froyo (version 2.2 of Android) and the Droid X should have it in the next two weeks. Go handle one in the store and you'll be impressed.
 
just made the switch from in iphone 3gs to the droidx and not regretting it one bit.
 
I say, neither. You've made it this long on a cheap phone and cheap service. Put the extra cash in the bank / invest it.

Its a couple (to 3) of thousand dollars every couple of years.

edit: I mean you haven't missed it yet, why start now?

Since you claim you've never had a smartphone, I am not sure how much Youtube you currently do outside of wifi-equipped areas. One thing people seem to forget when whining about AT&T's bandwidth tiering is that it *only* applies to data over their network. It does not apply to wifi. You can do all the wifi you want without caring about their tiers. Of course, both the iPhone and Droid X do wifi.

For an example, I have had my iPhone 3GS since January. In seven months I have done a massive 381MB down, 148MB up, over AT&T's network. That's in seven months. The amount of traffic I've done over wifi is probably 10x that. Yeah I watch Youtube sometimes, do a lot of social networking stuff, web browsing, etc. I'm just always graced with the luck of wifi when I do these things.

True dis, I've used less than 20MB since I got my Captivate since I'm on wifi at home and at the office. I still hate the 2GB cap, it's unnecessary and really just lame.

So, lemme guess, you are wrong most of your life, and you don't even know it. You may not care, and that fits you as well. I personally hate it when people believe they have critical thinking skills, but end up being a baboon.

You may hate that point, but you really don't know what the point is. Its true, you are just misinformed.

My point is that if you feel like you have a need for a device, snag one. Does the device have a particular need that you would like filled? Even if the "need" is "I just want one." If that is the case, will the cost justify the purchase to you? That's all.

I bought the original iPhone and it really increased my productivity, so it was worth it to me. I felt the 3G would be better and I was right. I have an Evo (using this Android device as a similarity to the Droid X) and the wife has an iPhone 4. They are both very similar, with some minor differences.

Yes, the major functions are identical. They both make calls, can text and get you on the internet via mobile. There are many cross platform apps that are high quality and are identical. The user interface is different, but logical on both accounts.

I personally would determine what service (ATT, Sprint or Verizon, etc) is best for your area, then buy the phone on that network. That is the major part of the equation, then get the phone that you like best on that network. Buying a great phone on a sub par (for your area) network is just asking for disappointment.

My wife has better signal with ATT in the parts of the city she needs to go, and same is true for me with Sprint.

OP, there are more than one alternative to get where you want to go. My point was, if you haven't missed it thus far, maybe you don't need it. If you decide that you do need it, go with the best network first, then get the phone you really like on that network.

Of course this is the [H] and the we love the hardware, but in this case the hardware is so very dependent on the network that you can not afford to sideline it.

As opposed to building a PC and having so many OS available. Versions of Windows, Linux and OSX. With a phone, you are almost always dependent on the cellular network.

Seiously I can't believe this thread turns in to shit over stupid shit.

Just buy what you want, I honestly have used the iphone but I will never go back. I can do so much with captivate without fuckign jail breaking it. GPS was an issue in the beginning but after changing the gps settings to use google server and turning sky hook on, I have been able to connect with in 30 seconds if I have not used it for hours but after the first try it locks on in less then 10 seconds every time for the last three days, so I am sure samsung will fix it without people having to manually mess with it.

The reason I got the galaxy s is because it has the fastest cpu and fastest gpu under the hood and it should really last you quite a bit before you think about changing phones again.

2gb limit is more then enough for everyday use, I doubt you are going to able to stream hulu over 3g, it is just not the same experience as wifi. PLus if you want hulu you gotta go android, you should be able to watch it directly with flash enabled.

I've have tapered off a lot since my first month. However, my first month I used about 2GB.

It largely depends on what you plan on doing with your phone. If you're away from the office or sit in airports, trains, etc for an hour or two a day you can easily suck up a lot of bandwidth. Around here I tend to see ~1Mbit/sec (125K/s). Which means if you want to crack 2GB you only need to saturate your connection for less than 5 hours. If your streaming music 8 hours a day at work, this can also be an issue.

Most people who just "casually" use their phones won't be effected by it. However if you're using the phone to stream things several hours a day over 3G, expect to have cap problems.

He said he wanted a smart phone... and then asked which one he should get. What, exactly, was the point of your first post? The choice was one smart phone or another, suggesting neither is not productive, and look, it caused drama.
 
My vote if for the iPhone 4. Better apps and more apps is the biggest reason to go with the iPhone. I've compared both the available stuff for Android and the iPhone and the iPhone is kicking the shit out of the Android as of currently. This will change, but it will take some more time before the Android has a comparable line up of apps. Better form factor/design too (although that is speculative).
 
I vote for the Droid X. I have one so my opinion isn't completely unbiased. However, there are some things that I think really set the Droid X above the iPhone 4.
1) Removable/upgradable storage. It comes with 8gb internal memory and a 16gb microSD (upgradeable to a32gb microSD fo)
2) Flash 10.1 support in Froyo
3) 4.3" screen vs 3.5" (this is subjective. I prefer the larger size)
4) Customizable GUI

For me, these are just some of the reasons I prefer the Droid X, and Android, over the iPhone(s).
 
Put the two phones next to each other and make a list of their strengths and weaknesses. When you make a list of what one phone can do and the other can't the best choice will be obvious. My suggestion is the Droid. I'm doing either the Evo or the Epic this month (waiting for the Epic's release)

If the phone that a random kid owns bothers you, then you may need to seek professional help.


As for the OP, I would consider the X over the iPhone... but just barely. And it just being on AT&T with no real Verizon date set is largely the deciding factor there. Personally I am on Verizon and I am thinking about getting a HTC Incredible soon, my 2 year ended a month or so ago. That said, they are both great phones so I doubt you will have any regrets if you do the iPhone or the X.

How is the Droid 2 not as powerful as the X? It's got the same exact CPU/GPU and same amount of RAM (512 MB).

The only diff in specs is the screen (3.7" vs 4.3"), keyboard/no keyboard and 5 MP camera vs 8 MP camera (which I'm betting you can't tell much difference from).

OP, I have no iPhone experience whatsoever, I've only used an iPod Touch for a couple hours total, heh. But from owning my Droid since December and been nothing but happy with it, I can say that there's no way you'll be unhappy going with the Droid X. :)
 
How's the service for Verizon and AT&T in your area? I know where I am from (Pittsburgh area) Verizon is dominant. Plus if your friends and family are mostly on Verizon you can get a cheaper voice plan to use less minutes.

I personally would go with any Android phone over the iPhone. The OS is more open than Apple's. Plus you will have unlimited data with Verizon as opposed to AT&T. Verizon has said they are going to do away with unlimited and its looking like that date is getting closer and closer with the coming of LTE.

Look at the quality of your carriers in the area and what you want out of your device.

iPhone - Much higher number of high quality apps and games, excellent display (IMHO the best out there), a faster/more responsive physical and software UI, right at the top in terms of smartphone battery life.

Android - Numerous carriers, lots of choice in terms of display size, lots of choice of input methods, more user configurability, you can install things like console emulators that you would otherwise need to jailbreak if you wanted on the iPhone.

Some people like the iPhone, others like Android, both have pluses and minuses. Hopefully I laid out the positives of each platform pretty well.
 
I would go Evo or iPhone.

Sorry I criticized the Droid X.
