iPad Reserve or Pre-Order

not pre-ordering. I'll probably grab one in the next month or two though

post some feedback when ya's get one

I'll be trying to pick up a 16GB or a 32GB model on Saturday at best buy.

I'm leaning towards 16 because I didn't even fill up 8GB on my iPhone when I had it. That way I can justify a 32GB or a 64GB second gen if it is a lot better.

I reserved a 32, but I have yet to fill my 16gb iPhone either.. So I might just pickup a 16 instead. Haven't decided yet

I think it's kinda silly preordering something as expensive as an ipad. I need to know more about it before I drop $500. Then you have to consider the fact that competing tablets from HP may very well be better.

The HP tablet is an MS product. I'm sorry, but if tablets of the past show anything, it's that developing the Tablet to work around windows is a bad idea. That's not to say people don't or can't use them, just that they aren't a success by now, there's something wrong with the formula and it isn't going to take off anytime soon. Taking it a step further, the forumla didn't work with Windows Mobile phone devices either, at least not well. When did it start taking off? That was where the iPhone changed the game.

The one line in the laughable iPad ads that catches me is that it is a device that conforms with the user. That's why tablets to this day have failed because they forced the user to work their way, not the way that may have been most intuitive for users. So when I see people complain about it not having pen input, I laugh. I whole heartedly agree that pen/stylus input is dead. No one wants that hassle. Touch is a reasonable replacement. But overall the device gives us great ways to interact with it outside of computer conventions like the mouse and keyboard and doesn't force another peripheral device on us to do it.

The reality though is that it wasn't Apple or the iPhone that won it alone, it was the foundation of a solid product that has enticed people to develop for it. It may not be the most open platform, but it definitely has an industry willing to jump in to develop for it. I don't think it will fail and that's enough for me to want to have one right away (it helps that I intend to develop for it as well I suppose).

Side note, I just got confirmation tonight that my iPad has shipped, woot!

Stylus support is at least a good option. There's something that's more fun and intuitive about touching the screen, but a stylus affords some extra precision in some cases. A GUI shouldn't be designed around it, since touch should be the lowest common denominator, but getting an extra advantage from a stylus is at least a beneficial option.

I see a lot of failing Windows-based tablets and slates ahead, but I don't think it would be beneficial if they were to disappear entirely. Those devices have their place just as the iPad has its (naturally a much larger place based on pre-order estimations). For the most part, I don't think most consumers really want the hassle of a full-blown computer that size and the iPad'll find success for having dramatically simplified the interaction (and system maintenance) equation. Still, there will be a market for Windows tablets, however minimal.

Couple of things to keep in mind. Windows convertible tablets and pure slates have been around for almost 7 years. And every year many OEMs like HP, Toshiba, Lenovo and Fujitsu introduce new models, and while the numbers may be small at least in the convertible segment, the TPC must be selling otherwise why would these OEMs keep making new models year after year for the last 7?

Also many people see input methods as mutually exclusive and that's not the case. I've had many people tell me things like "I can type faster than I write so I don't need a TPC." While this is valid you can write math faster than you can type it. Now you may not need that kind of functionality but many people, especially students who are using keyboards and mice for taking free form notes are CONFORMING to the machine rather than having the machine confirms to their needs at the time.

That's the beauty of a convertible TPC. It functions the way you need it given the situation. I understand that not everyone needs that extreme amount of flexibility but it is TOTALLY misunderstood by people. Sometimes I just like to hand write an email or post just because I can, its just a fun break sometimes from a keyboard.

But when I'm web surfing or reading a Kindle title at night the pen and keyboard both take a break and multi-touch becomes the primary input method that works EXTREMELY well for a desktop OS.

When you have this kind of functionality and know how to use it you'll NEVER give it up.

Just got an email from Apple stating that Applecare is now available for the iPad in Florida and wanted to know if I wanted to add it back onto my order.

I am purchasing one (already reserved) and going to do some live coverage on it via LiveStream. If anyone has any specific questions regarding the iPad or wants to see some live coverage (and or recorded coverage, via video-on-demand library) let me know. PM me your questions or if you are interested in viewing the footage, pm me for the link.

That's like saying that's why the El Camino was so great..if you need a truck you have one, if you need a car you have one. It sucked at both and that's what most TPCs do. Thicker than a straight tablet needs to be with a smaller worse looking screen than a notebook needs. The OS wedges touchscreen functionality over the normal Windows OS. They put super lower power (read: super low speed) components in it to make up for all the other stuff. I've used them. My sales people use them now. None of us have ever been a fan. Too many compromises on both sides.

Also, mine STILL hasn't shipped so who knows when I'll get it at this point....

I agree with this fully. I do not, never have, and never will, think that a tablet should be an all-in-one convergence device for people to use, like they try to be. They need to be good at SOMETHING, and they really aren't good at anything. Passable, maybe, but not Good.

Apple isn't saying anything impossible. It's touch screen capabilities alone give it a bunch of things that it can do, and provide for experience, that a TPC cannot. Also, many of the apps on the iPad will not be cross platform, that alone gives it thousands of things that a TPC cannot do. Not to say that their are not thousands of things a TPC can do that an iPad can't, but they haven't said anything false or untrue either.

And the only place that comment shows up is in the search meta-data. Hardly a huge marketing statement, especially since you have to use 'ipad features' as the search to get it to come up.

Modern TPCs have DUAL mode digitizers, multi-touch and EMR pen. Surfing now with multi-touch on my tm2. Okay, the iPad has more touch enabled stuff, true, but web surfing, eReading, media playback, all touch enabled. And its not like some of that stuff won't end on the TPC as well where it makes sense.

See this is WHY hate this stuff because it creates SO much information.

Plus you're being a little disingenuous, The implication is CLEARLY not that the iPad CAN'T do thousands of things that a TPC can't. It's meant to be totally on the plus side for the iPad.

Obviously, thats called marketing spin. TPC could turn around and say the exact same thing about the iPad.

I don't understand! Ford and Toyota both say they make the best cars! But they can't both be the best! I'm so confused!!!!

It's marketing man. Let it go.

I would have agreed with this more 2 months ago. Then I got a tm2 and while there is still much truth in what you say, a well built convergence can be not only a jack of trades but a master of more than you might think. At 4.5 lbs the tm2 is holds its own against the vast majority of devices of that size in terms features beyond the tablet features.

I mean this thing play games very well for its size, hell it even can play Blu Ray movies at FULL 1080P and has an HDMI connector though unless you rip the disc to hard drive you need an external BD ROM drive to do it. But you can carry full BD movies with you if you want and it works as well as any laptop.

And then there are synergies that you get. If you wanted to for instance make copies of pages out of Kindle book, we'll you're an a PC, screen shot OCR and heck you ripping stuff out of eBooks. Not saying that's a big reason to get a TPC but just an example of how you can do things just because of the vast functionality of Windows.

It's not a matter of what it can do but what it CAN'T because that's a fairly short list.

I put in a preorder for the 3G version but I decided to save money and get a WiFi one. Hopefully I'll be able to snag one on Saturday.

So you just plan to walk into an Apple store and pick one up? I'm thinking about doing that because I really want to do some comparisons side by side to a TPC and do my own video reviews. But I would like the option of returning it when I'm done.

That's pretty much the plan. They're going to be at Best Buy too.

Okay, then that's where I'll go because I have a Silver Rewardszone there and can take ANYTHING back including electronics within 45 days, just need to be sure that covers the iPad as well. Thanks!

Wait.. are you really stating theft and unauthorized usage as a reason TO get a TPC? Seriously?

And the number of people who actually use any sort of OCR are so limited that it is almost meaningless, so that argument is moot.

BTW, you could rip pages out of a kindle book.. just take a screenshot...

Jailbreaking anyone? Torrents anyone? I'd say that unauthorized uses of devices is pretty normal. Not saying that one should do it but lets be honest. It's a BIG consideration in the grand scheme of things for many average folks.

And once again even I was shocked by how well the process worked. OCR of well formed text in an image in OmniPage 17 is practically perfect BTW.

What's really trippy is taking a screenshot of a Kindle book and putting it OneNote. 100% searchable without OCR and its perfect.

Okay, Game over. A Streaming Netflix App is coming to iPad. Damn now this is looking tempting....

I was more referring to the theft part of that statement as the issue. Though i dont have an issue with jailbreaking, just dont find a need to do it to my phone at the moment.

And just how many 'average' folks do you know with a jailbroken iphone? not many.. that group of people is very small, and typically not 'average'

edit:
and as for torrents.. the technology/application is not illegal, its the manner in which it is used. (as in, the files that are torrented)

Vimeo videos work on the iPhone. Should work just fine on the iPad.
