Reserve and Pre-Orders are now up, who else is diving in?

I'm in for a 32GB Reserve, Going to pick it up on the 3rd from Portland,ME Apple Store.

Anyone else in ME or NH going to be at the launch?

Will these only be available at Apple Stores at launch or will Best Buy carry them as well? I have like $100 in Rewards Zone coupons that I'd like to use if I pick this up.

Whoa. heatlesssun might pick one up!! The sky is falling!! :p

I think I'll get a 16GB, I don't think I'll pre-order though.

I'd assume that Best Buy won't be stocking them on the 3rd, but I really don't know. Demand should be fairly high and Apple may want to keep initial launch units in their own stores only.

Not pre-ordering myself. Going to have to use one before I make my decision.

Placed a preorder for the 16gb Wifi version. Still thinking if I really want an iPad. Been wanting an eReader device and the iPad fits the bill for me plus more (need some backlighting so I can read in the dark). Doesn't hurt to sit on a preorder until I decide on it.

Eh... IPS screens are nice but e-Ink is probably better for a dedicated reader device.

Heh, I think you missed the part where I need the backlighting. Or maybe I missed the fact the Kindle or Nook have backlighting? I don't think they do. I don't need a dedicated eReader per se, but the iPad will mainly be used for that and among the other things it can do. I also have an iPhone with bunch of apps. so it'll be nice to use them on the iPad.

Why wouldn't I? I'm one of a handful of people even in forums like these that's used any touch screen computer bigger than a phone on a daily basis for over a year and tablets in general for almost 2 decades.

I TRUELY appreciate what Apple is trying to do with the iPad and as a fan of the form factor of course I'm at least going to take a REAL look at it.

Honestly though I have no idea what I'd do with it personally (and I'm not alone apparently) simply because I already have overall more functional devices but maybe as an eReader or something given its size.

I'm not surprised heat is getting one. We might have to compare notes. Oh, and if you reserve one, you can go to the apple store, play with one, and if you dont like it, don't pick it up, but it guarantees you one on launch day at whatever apple store you pick.

You are correct. I read in bed at night all the time so being able to read in the dark and not disturbing the wife is important.

Both Kindle and Nook have Windows clients and that's pretty damn sweet along with the others out there and they are cool to use on a TPC.

I pre-ordered a 64gb 3G model. Added Applecare and checked out. I later got an email saying that Apple can't sell me Applecare for the iPad in Florida. That's the first I've heard about that.

Florida and North Carolina residents cannot get AppleCare because of extended warrantee laws in those states. In Florida, its really just apple being stubborn, because they could sell it there, if they paid the administrative fee to have a company background check completed (I would assume they are standing on some 'principal' about being forced to do things they do not want to do, but I think its just bogus.) You can always pickup some applecare off of Ebay once the iPad applecares start showing up there.. or pay someone in another state to pick it up and send you the info for it.

For some reason I got anti-Apple vibe from you in the past, that's all.

No I'm not an Apple fan but I don't let my biases blind me from the truth. Apple has captured a certain tech spirit and they do delight their customers. Only an fool would see that.

That said, its the HYPE that I can't take. "Magical"? But then maybe that's why Apple has had the success it's had. They can transcend things like hardware specs and make people just believe. There's a lot to be said about that quality in relation to technology because there's a certain amount of faith that you have to have in a tool for it to be effective.

I live in NC and did not know this. Do you know what the issue is in NC?

Ehh at first I was leaning towards getting it, but then realized it really does seem like nothing more than a big iPod touch. So like phide I'm going to wait it out and play around with it first. Maybe if it's fast enough, because the UI on the touch isn't very smooth at times (web browsing especially)

@ heatlesssun:

I'm not sure what the issue is in NC, I haven't been able to find any data on NC, just Florida. It may have been cleared up, I'll look into it a bit more.

Interested in it, but there are too many other tablets coming out this year.

IMO it is stupid to jump on the iPad right away before seeing the real competition.

Actually, I redact the statement about North Carolina, it looks like, according to the AppleCare website, that the issue, whatever it was, has been remedied.

Not if your computing life pretty much revolves around Apple products to begin with. But if your in the Windows, or *nix (not including OS X) camp, then yeah, jumping on a single product with so many about to launch would be pretty silly. unless your buying now to test it out, and then compare to other devices later on. Which would be, I bet, what heatlesssun is doing.

Thanks for the update. I've lived in NC all my life and never heard about this so I thought I was losing it.

Thanks again!;)

There's also the JooJoo tablet coming out soon and I think I read it will also be $499. Looks really really good

Here's the UI: http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/10/joojoo-revamps-interface-ahead-of-launch-adds-local-video-playb/

I guess, but with things like the JooJoo pad, Microsoft Slate PCs, Microsoft Courier, Netbook Convertibles/Tablets (that could possible load OSX), it just seems a bit early to jump in.

I have this sneaky suspicion the iPad is not going to be the best Apple tablet once OSX gets loaded on the other tablets that are coming out :p

I would normally agree with you, except for two reasons. Loading OS X on anything that isn't apple hardware is against EULA, which means no support, and I hate having to do things that take up my time when my time is better spent elsewhere. (dont get me wrong, I love screwing with things, but not something that is supposed to work flawlessly already) and OS X on a touch screen is absolutely Horrid from a usability standpoint. Especially smaller screens. (I had a modbook when they first came out, as well as a 21" Wacom touchscreen available at Uni.. absolutely terrible OS for touch.)

The JooJoo pad I may have to get as well, just to play with it.

Edit:

After looking at the JooJoo pad's site again, I think I will def. be getting that device as well. Might have some usefulness ontop of the iPad, though I'm not sure I like the fact it is a browser-based OS. Wonder if you will always have to be connected, or if networkless computing is available as well.

Buying Applecare off of Ebay is taking a big chance. I have been reading that Apple has become more strict on showing proof of purchase from Apple. I recently sold my Macbook Pro. I had purchased Applecare for it off of Ebay. In order to transfer Applecare to the new owner, they asked me for the official proof of purchase.

There are some issues with AppleCare in NC. They sometimes have to be registered differently. I've hit that in the past. Not a big deal.

Not to mention its running ATOM and ION, which means probably 2.5 -3.5 hours of battery life.

But it can backhand the iPad in its video and web skills. They are saying around 5hrs of battery life.

@ grentz.. I wouldn't say backhand.. the only thing it will have up on the iPad is flash and the forward facing camera. Other than that, it has nothing, No pre-existing developer support, and half the battery life. Personally, I'm all for the ditching of Flash, going with HTML5 instead is a much better option in my opinion, but thats my opinion only.

I really wouldn't call having flash and a front facing camera a 'backhand' on the video front. Web side, if you like using flash apps, sure, its a better option for you. Most major sites that are flash driven will have applications built within the first couple months, so its really a non-issue.

16GB seems like such a small amount of space. I am finding that 32GB isn't enough on my Touch.

I'm going to pre-order a 16GB. Then "find" a way to share the 3G connection from my iPhone and stream videos as I want them. The only space I will need would be for apps as my iPhone (which is always in my pocket anyway) holds all my music.

I think the typical well-encoded H.264 movie at 1024x* is going to be around 1-1.2GB. I did some test encodes at that horizontal resolution, and that's about where they ended up.

So, if you want any decent high res video on this thing, you're really going to want at least 32GB.

i cant decide which size i want .. i have a 32gb iphone that has like 4gb used .. so i dont know if i should just get the 16gb or the largest .. i wont put music on it .. just use it for games .. maybe some videos and ebooks .. dont need 3g as that is what my phone is more in emergencies

I'm just surprised that they are charging my card for something that won't ship until the end of April. Most companies charge just before it ships.

It's just a pre-auth. If you ordered a 3G I expect that'll fall off in a couple days...unless they are surprising everyone with shipments.
