iOS 7 Discussion

Yeah, the animations are quite a bit slower on my iPad 3. Makes it frustrating.

It can be on mine, but it's not too bad. I'd stick with iOS6, though, if you are picky or care a lot about it. There is a fine line there, I guess. If it's too much lag, it's a bitch. If it's just a little, it's fine. I do notice that after a while, it doesn't have as much lag (caching? Not sure how that works on an iDevice).

I like it on my iPad 3 & iPhone 4S. It does have some lag, but it's not too horribly bad to make it unusable. Annoying at times, though.

I usually bash Apple for most things. I hated the previews of iOS7. Looked like shit. In person, though, it's not bad at all. I prefer the new look over the old one. Makes iOS6 look ancient in comparison.

Is there anyone you know that has already updated? I guess that might be the best way to see if the lag is too much for you. For me, it's fine. I can put up with it. For others, they think it's way too much.

Is dooblebobber the technical term? :p

Apple has a Lightning accessory approval program for third parties. They aren't trying to force you to buy their cables—they don't even sell the kind of extension cable you want—they're trying to avoid incidents like this.

Doodlebobber is most definitely the technical term. :) But here's my rub - it's not a transformer. It's a little hunk of metal - a male lightning connector connected directly to a female connector. It's not even a cable - just a socket extender (so they can't even complain about cable gauges). There's just no need for this nonsense - especially when they haven't addressed a very common problem - the fact that most phones can't be docked into apple products with a case on. "Don't use that - it's not approved! You might die!" (even though we don't offer an alternative)

BAH I say. /grumpy_old_man_mode

My biggest gripe so far is how iOS7 enforces the use of overpriced Apple cables. I have an extender doodlebobber so I can dock my iphone with a bulky case - but now since it's not "Apple approved" it wont' work. So frustrating - mostly because Apple doesn't offer an equivalent doodlebobber...

Odd, my girlfriend's iphone 5 on ios7 charges fine with both a monoprice brick and a 10ft usb extender and a monoprice lightning cable. Nothing apple involved.

As for cables, the charging has to be really clean and solid before the phone will charge. I dont think it is a scam, i think that iphones are just really stringent on their tolerances. ive seen apple (brick side) chargers that are clearly damaged that wont charge an iphone but will charge other phones.

Our company has a ton of Iphones. When IOS 7 got released, a lot of the big wigs upstairs didnt like it. 8 out of the 10 decided to go android.

The next day our leadership group sent out an email to the company saying that they want all Iphones to be replaced with Android phones within the next 3 months. And that no more Iphones are to be purchased. Basically banned them because of the OS.

Typical knee-jerk reaction bullshit from upper management execs.

iOS 7 isn't so bad as to require the waste of man hours to implement Android phones to every employee and buying of new devices.

It's a common problem because case manufacturers don't take docks into account. That is not Apple's responsibility.

It is when they mandate that a special little Apple chip has to be present in the doodlebobber.

My griffin cable works just fine on iOS7

That "special little Apple chip" allows Lightning to be reversible.

Again: it is not Apple's problem to make sure that a third party case is compatible with their docks. It is the third party's responsibility to decide whether or not they want their case to work with an Apple dock. Stop blaming the wrong party for your inconvenience.

My battery woes have certainly settled themselves. Usage: 5h:4m, Standby 1d:16h. 42% left.

That is pretty frustrating.

Does anyone else have a hard time swiping up the control center when in the messaging app?

You can't access the control center with the keyboard open (I'm assuming because of people accidentally pulling up the tab while typing). If you swipe the keyboard down (to hide it) then you can access the CC (or go back to the main messages view or exit the app)

I can definitely do it, it's just not easy or consistent.

So again I agree, the case not working in the dock is not Apples fault. But enforcing apple chip thingies on peoples existing stuff is just a slap in the face to their customers. Furthermore, where was the big warning that this was going to happen? Hidden in page 95 of the Eula? Give me a break.

They should have put a warning "hey we don't like this cable, use at your own risk" and if they wanted to enforce it, then they are free to do it on the 5s and 5c with a "hey this new phone requires xyz"

Doing it the way they did is total bs and bad for business. And yes, THAT is their fault. And IMO they should fix it.

They are fixing it. They only way to get shady OEMs to stop making unauthorized Lightning cables is to prevent them from working so the market dries up. In a couple of months, you won't even be able to buy an uncertified Lightning cable since no one will make them anymore.

GF lost her contacts when we upgraded, but we did do an iCloud backup beforehand. I tried having her turn contacts syncing off and on to try to resync, but doesn't seem to work.

Any handy-dandy tips?

It's a CABLE. It's not even a cable - it's just two connectors welded together. Are they protecting me from shady manufacturers making them out of plutonium? Please enlighten me as to how the never-ever-wrong Apple Inc. is protecting me. This is nothing more than a money grab using safety as a distraction.

Are you sure the contacts were stored on iCloud or an exchange account instead?

Contacts stored local on the device or on an exchange account won't go into iCloud unless you push them onto there.

It's a reversible cable with programatic pins in it. There's a chip in it that figures out what signal to supply to each of the 8 pins. Go look at one disassembled and come back to the thread. It's not a regular cable.

http://dockforiphone.com/apple-iphone-5-new-lightning-cable-connector-disassembly-teardown/

Unauthorized devices have been responsible for exploding on people and being vectors for malware insertion. If you can afford a $600 phone, you can afford to spend $10 on a legit cable.

It's like you slept through the last 10 years of iPhone and iPod accessory releases. Apple has done this since the iPod era. Accessories must be certified to guarantee they'll work; uncertified devices may or may not work depending on the device in question.

And as CEpeep reiterates, this is not "just a cable". The chip is there to make Lightning connectors reversible, not to raid your wallet or reinforce your easy cynicism.

All this BS about "ooh, it's reversible" is bunch of crap.
Look, Apple has a patent on the connector with its chip. They won't let anyone use it without paying them a royalty/licensing fee. Anyone who doesn't pay them can try and fudge the cable, hack the check signal etc if they want.

This is about money. PERIOD.

Exactly. Apple has no interest in compatibility or letting cheap chinese manufacturers make accessories that can't be sold for obscene markups, or letting people use their existing peripherals.

This horse was already beaten to death last year when the cable came out. There's no way to send all of the data that Apple used the 30-pin connector for across 8 pins without some sort of novel way to figure out which of those pins should become active and what should be sent across them. The same 8 pins can move USB data, power, ethernet, HDMI video, likely Thunderbolt and should be adaptable to any other sort of standard likely to be released. Your nostalgia for the 30-pin cable is completely wasted. It was a clunky piece of crap, prone to breaking and huge groups of pins were dedicated to technologies that Apple doesn't even use anymore, like Firewire. It's time to move on.

To be clear, I don't begrudge them their share. But let's not pretend Apple's doing this to protect the end user.
And I fucking hate my iPhone 5, and have never owned a device with a 30-pin connector, so I have no nostalgia to speak of.
(FYI, My ire is not pointed at you, but my iPhone, so don't take that personally :) )

Well, I'm going to do something you don't see much on [H]. I'll concede defeat. :) I did not realize the cables had chips in them switching the voltages around. I incorrectly assumed they were simpler than that. =\

Well that's annoying. It's not the money. Its that this connector is the only one I've found to work with connecting an otterbox case to an iHome alarm clock.

Apple makes one of these:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=45

But I need one that's lightning to lightning - basically just an extender. And I'll be darned if I can find one. :(

Fair enough. If the Lightning connector frustrates you, the 30-pin connector would have given you conniption fits. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's a huge step up from where Apple was just last year.

Except… that's a big reason why the accessory certification program exists, to improve the lowest common denominator in the enormous accessory market. How do exploding uncertified chargers benefit the people who buy them? Exactly what are you looking for here, besides The Opposite Of Whatever The Company You Hate Is Currently Doing™?

You've done an excellent job perusing the links in this thread explaining exactly how Lightning connectors work and what the chip you despise so much does. Carry on.

Ah... I know how it works, and I understand it. But I refuse to think that a company KNOWN for its focus on cash has suddenly done something to protect the consumer. No, they created a better cable. Fine, and I get that, and I suppose at some level I benefit since I use them. BUT, if they were really in it for the consumer, they wouldn't ask for the licensing fees they do, and instead just make the chip tech available for every manufacturer that wanted them, or at least the specs for the chips.

There's a reason Apple spent tens of thousands of dollars to patent the connector and its tech: to protect and enforce it...

And make money.

I don't hate apple. I don't even hate their hardware. I DO hate their software and its silly restrictions. My stock ownership in the company makes me like them more.
But that doesn't mean this isn't about money.

Even common connectors like HDMI charge a licensing fee to use the spec. SecureDigital cards have a licensing fee. The MHL connector Android phones use to output HDMI over MicroUSB is covered by a licensing fee. It would be unprecedented for Apple to break the mold and offer Lightning as an open spec. Being so hung up on it is ridiculous, not to mention self-sabotaging if you are indeed a shareholder.

Of course it's "about money." Everything Apple does is "about money," just like all their competitors. Until corporations can run on Peace, Happiness or Love you're just going to have to deal with it.

THIS is my point exactly

Contacts stored local on the device or on an exchange account won't go into iCloud unless you push them onto there.

A restart seemed to have fixed it somehow, I did the tick on/off in iCloud once more, and yes, the contacts were stored previously.

Apple isn't known for its focus on cash, nor are they known for being anti-consumer. You don't get to invent facts.

I DO hate their software and its silly restrictions.

And I'm baffled as to how this led to a blind rage over a badly designed third party accessory.

You do know that Apple has one of the largest reserves of cash on hand of any company in the world, right? LINK
And I never said they were anti-consumer. They are very pro consumer, since that's where they get their money. What I AM saying that they don't do things to protect the consumer unless those things also make them money.

And I'm baffled as to how this led to a blind rage over a badly designed third party accessory.
I think you need to review the thread... i don't have any third party accessories for my phone outside of my case which, on point, is compatible with every dock, supposedly.

But back on topic:
I do think iOS7 has resulted in better battery life on my 5, not because it's more efficient though. I find myself using the 'multitasking' pane more, and pruning off apps I know are resource hogs when I'm not using them. It's not a HUGE increase, but I'll take it.

Yes, but they are infamous for not spending it. One of the reasons investors are angry with Apple is that they haven't paid out some of that cash in the form of a dividend. They also are very selective about acquisitions, and outwardly appear to prefer to let the cash sit rather than be used.

That behavior in no way translates to your original description. In fact, it contracts it.

Clearly it isn't, which was somehow labeled Apple's fault.
