Introducing the Steam Controller

I'm waiting for some reviews but it looks interesting. I will probably end up picking one up to possibly replace my 360 controller.

looks interesting, but i'll wait for the guinea pigs to test it and let me know if it's really worth

The two-stage move the video did with iron sighting and shooting is very interesting, but I'm not sure it will be useful for me. I just don't play many shooters on the couch. Though, that may be because I am terrible with a controller...:(

picked up the link and controller together. pretty excited to try them out.

I've always been dead set against any controller gaming, unless it's for platform games (which I haven't played since the 8bit nintendo days).

That being said, this - on the surface - looks like the best controller I have ever seen.

Just trying to wrap my head around it all (since I have no controller experience since the NES days)... for L4D2 I have WASD, mouse pointer, crouch, jump, shove, shoot, reload, E, and cycle through weapons / items. I can do all that with this controller without losing my mind?

Even though this is probably the best controller I ahve seen, it was exhausting to watch that video and see how awful all the hand movements were to do stuff on a controller as opposed to a mouse and keyboard...

exactly my thoughts. though after I see a review, I'm still holding on the "best controller" there is category, interesting and intriguing - yes. The Best? still waiting on it. :p

Holy shit.......this is the real deal.

I suck with a controller.......I'm in for two and one of those link thingy's.:D

For sure. Ergonomically a controller is great for moving and for button access to do things, if the controller is well designed. The only thing that I think a controller will always lag behind in compared to KBM--any why the touchpad intrigues me--is aiming.

Try this: Go attempt to play a fps with a mouse touchpad.

It's not pretty.

Interesting. $50 is too steep for my blood. Maybe I'll snag a couple when they are 75% off on an upcoming sale. :p

I still think the button placement is going to make any face-button heavy game uncomfortable over the long haul. I love it as a 2-sticks + shoulder buttons controller, though. I almost wish it was modular enough to swap where the face buttons and the right touchpad are.

Ahh, the limitations of predatory avian anatomy. I operate a keyboard and mouse fine due to their shape, and I can use a flight stick, but those controller things are definitely made for monkey paws. I'll be passing.

I had to double take this as I was sure it was the same terrible controller they came out with a year ago. I thought surely this many people didn't miss everyone praising it after looking at it then 5 minutes of use, but then everyone hating it after a few hours.

But no, same stupid controller.

I would preorder a controller and a link station but I dont trust Valve to release on time if ever.

I may change my mind once reviews start pouring in, until then it is just mired in the long long long fog of vaporware.

My Video analysis:

General feelings = the video did nothing to sway my feelings on the controller. It's great they are trying to do something new though and I can see this being successful.

Background Music = are they mocking us with this comedic stuff? perhaps the person who chose it had subconsious feelings of "this is a joke"

Keyboard entry = looks ok for anything other than time-critical entries

button positions = looks like with smaller hands there is a bit too much reach

Witcher 3 footage = yikes... choppy, sloppy, uncomfortable-looking movement... based on this there's no way in hell I wouldn't just bust out a wireless mouse/keyboard with any 1st/3rd person game. bad demonstration here :/

community feedback = I've heard nothing great and nothing good about the controller yet, but looking forward to hearing more solid reviews

I was expecting an Xbox controller. This actaully isnt that bad, i may have to get on board.

Why not just make a G13 or Razer in a controller form factor? This looks like yet another console controller.

I've been interested to see what they can do with this controller.
Negative points so far are saddening, awaiting more user reviews.

This is what impressed me most also. The idea of having an analog trigger and a digital button combined into one is actually pretty smart. I'm kinda surprised no one has thought of this before now. Also, are the backsides of the grips buttons? That would also be handy.

Still not sure I'm sold on the thumb pads though. It actually looked like it handled Cities ok, but it looked more cumbersome than an analog stick would have been with Witcher.

Valve is really doing well here. I'm excited for their future, and the future of SteamOS. Won't be getting me one of these controllers though... I like the mouse & keyboard too much to ever leave for a controller.

Their hardware offerings aren't bad IMO. I might bite on the steam link if I can convince myself to use a controller again. I really prefer mouse+kb......stopped consoles years ago. Playing kb+mouse at the couch just won't work I think.

Noticed that combo is $100 while independently controller is $50 and link station $100. Those were no go until I saw the combo price and may consider it depending

Personally, I think the controller looks pretty great for certain types of games. I don't think I'll use it for everything, but definitely for older FPS with more complicated control schemes. Especially, if it means I don't have to fiddle with Xpad and whatnot.

I'll still have my 360 pad for native support games and genre types that I prefer it with.

The great thing about PC is options.

KB + mouse works incredibly well on sofa if you do it right.
I only ever use my PC from the sofa because its incredibly easy and comfortable (and convenient for the projector).

Big feather cushions are the key because feather cushions can be shaped to exactly what you need.
So you can get properly comfortable with good back+neck support and you can set the mouse height and arm support exactly.
If you have fine weave cushion covers or seat covers the mouse can track them directly.
Or you can use a mousepad type surface on top.

My preferred method is to lean back, support my arm with a cushion so that my elbow lightly rests on the seat next to me and have the mouse on the same seat.
Or do the same but have my arm and mouse on a cushion which shapes to exactly what is needed.
Keyboard on my knee

My cushions are approx 60cm x60cm, I have 5 of them.
I could get away with 3, but 5 lets me get comfy in any position, even lying sideways with my mouse arm out straight..
Keyboard then rests one end on my leg or a cushion, the other on the sofa, whatever is easiest to use.
Your missus will love how comfy they are when you are watching a film together. Double bonus :p

You need a mouse that can be configured to track from different heights if you want to use it directly on a cushion or seat.
If you use a mouse mat, any mouse is fine.

yes those are grip buttons. those and the trigger/button combo interest me the most. I don't see the touch part being accurate enough for fps'(at least fast passed fps') but I could be wrong. i'd need to try-before-buy for sure.

Well the idea is to offer true analog input for a controller. Notice how he was able to snap aim 90 degrees left with his thumb. It'll be a clumsy stopgap for a real mouse but should be better than a dumb stick. Hell I dunno might even be better than a mouse if hand-eye coordination has better motor control of a thumb instead of a wrist. If there was any better way to bond a controller to a FPS this is it.

Though, that may be because I am terrible with a controller...:(
It's not just you, pretty much every player has a higher skill ceiling with a mouse and keyboard for games that require aiming than a mouse and keyboard. That's why you basically never see cross-platform competitive multiplayer games. Microsoft did tests a few years back and average users on mouse and keyboard were destroying highly experienced gamepad players.

Users of Steam controller have said it's difficult if not impossible to line up meatshots on bots that are practically standing still. In nearly every review of Steam controller, it has been panned as an unwieldy solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

I would say I'm shocked that PC gamers are drooling over this thing, but then I remembered it has a Valve logo on it and PC gamers will place on a pedestal anything related to Steam. Gabe could take a dump on a paper plate, call it a Steamer, price it at $300 and the Internets would go wild with desire.

Seriously guys, touchpads?

Mmmmmm.. shadowrun. That was fun.
But I mean more than just the difference between KBM/controller accuracy and precision. I mean that I am damn near retarded with a controller. I'm fine with racing games (which account for most of my couch-time games), but anything else, including third person games like Assassin's creed or Shadows of Mordor, and I turn into Jim from the Office.
