Tigerbiten was our [H]ardDC'er of the Month for February 2007, and I finally got a chance to piece together our interview from PM's, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did doing it.
Tdg: Congrats on winning the [H]ard|Forum HardDC'er of the Month award, how does it feel to be chosen by your peers for such a award?
Tigerbiten: Chuffed. Thrilled, Etc, Etc ...
Tdg: Why do you think you were chosen?
Tigerbiten: Did not expect to be nominated & never dreamed of winning by a landslide. I must be one getting on to be one of the old timers on the team now. Don't go as far back as some but can still remember when you crunched all day on a 10 point WU. It was Relic's poems that really started me folding plus loosing a friend to the Dragon. I still cannot read all the poems in one sitting. I always said I was lucky loosing an arm to a Tiger. Its over a done with, it wont get better but it wont get worse. Unlike the Dragon, who you never know when it going to rear its ugly head again. Plus I got paid for it from the insurance, it has paid over the years for the farm upgrades & power to keep it running.
Tdg: Tell us what you do DC wise.
Tigerbiten: I only run Folding.
Tdg: Have you run any other distributed computing projects in the past, before folding?
Tigerbiten: No, I have only folded for the [H]orde.
Tdg: How many boxen, what types, and speeds do you currently have?
Tigerbiten: Started on a dual 1800+ MP system. But that soon got expanded up to a dual Opteron 250 & five dual 2400+ MP's. For the next big change, I swapped the MP's for X2's. Then added a C2D system. Then I added a dual 285 system.
Tdg: What kind of production, WU's or points, do you produce daily for the [H]?
Tigerbiten: Current setup:
Dual 285's @ 2.6 GHz, running the SMP client, ~2,000 PpD.
Dual 250's @ 2.4 GHz, running the SMP client, ~1,000 PpD.
C2D @ 2.75 GHz with dual X1950xtx's running dual GPU clients, ~1300 PpD.
5x X2's @ 2.4 GHz with X1950xtx's, running both CPU & GPU clients, ~4,000 PpD.
When everything works the 44.7 GHz produces +8,000 PpD.
Next change.
I'm going to pull the X1950xtx's out of the X2's and swap them over to SMP folding.
I'll save around 500-600 watts in power.
That will cut around £35 a month off my electric bill.
Looking at a dual-quad Xeon as my next build ... A 5k PpD box.
If I build it I may drop the dual 250's out of the farm.
I also need to get around to selling off all the old hardware from the first farm.
Tdg: Wow, are all those folding machines at your house, some at work?
Tigerbiten: Its all a home farm. I work part time as a horse groom so no computers at work.
Tdg: With that kind of a farm, your electricity bill must be quite high? How much is that farm costing a month on average for parts and electric?
Tigerbiten: Electric draw is ~2 kWh at the moment. At about 9p ($0.18 USD) per KWh farm costs £125 ($245 USD) per month. Electric prices have risen 50% in the last 18 months here.
I tend to spend around £2,500 ($4895 USD) on each major upgrade and I upgrade every couple of years as new hardware makes the old farm to slow.
Tdg: Have you participated in any of the [H] DC subforum games/events? Have you initiated or administrated any of them?
Tigerbiten: Not really. Entered the last FAH contest, but being in the UK makes it difficult to ship the prizes.
Tdg: Have you gotten any else to into folding?
Tigerbiten: No, no one else I know has a good enough computer thats on long enough to any useful work.
Tdg: If folding could cure just one disease to make it all worthwhile, which disease would it be?
Tigerbiten: The Dragon ..........
I always said I was lucky with my accident.
I lost an arm but its over and done with.
It wont get better but it also wont get worse.
With cancer you never know that.
