Interstate 76

Have any of you seen anything like the old game Interstate 76 in a relatively new or upcoming title? The game was great for me you had vehicle options and upgrades coupled with a huge (at the time) map where it seemed like you could drive forever. I also REALLY liked the fact that you could collect certain upgrades and spare parts from other vehicles you destroyed. The game was just too fun. I know if I tried to play it now somehow it would look terrible but on the same note its tempting.

So is there is something out there to either look for or will be out in the near future.

LOVED this game. For whatever reason, I could never get it to run right...I recall having low framerate, crashes, etc. back when it came out. Sucked because the game itself was fucking awesome. I recall Interstate '82 not being quite as good.

If they announced a modern sequel or successor I would probably just start throwing money at the screen.

That said, the new Mad Max game might have some similarities? At least I hope so anyway.

Wow, almost forgot about that game. It was prolly the best PC game I played as a kid on my parent's NEC Pentium 133 MHz computer. I'm surprised with all the remakes nowadays, they haven't did this game.

Just for nostalgia, I watched this supercut of the game and I think it still looks decent for an old DOS game, voice acting is still pretty good too! The closest thing I can think of it today is the GTA games, but of course they're less about the car combat than I76 is.

Road Redemption has you riding motorcycles against other kinds of vehicles, but otherwise seems like something close to what you want. I'm waiting for it to come out of Early Access.

I still have my copy of I'76, have it installed on my Athlon/V5 machine in sig. Great times, but sad it got such a mediocre sequel that stripped out much of what made the original great.

I know it will be a cold day in hell, but I'd love to see a new Interstate title.

No game ever came close to i76. Even i82 went more arcade and had you get out of the vehicle (i76s #1 rule. Don't get out)

OMG that looks dope, I miss the Road Rash type games. How did I not know of this earlier?! Anyhow, the newer Mad Max games looks more like I76 to me. Basically like Twisted Metal with 70's vehicles. All of the above is fun as hell.

Ha yea I probably would too.

I agree that the games after I76 just didn't have the feel. I remember having graphics issues with it too but still played. I think that Mad Max is going to have more of a preconfigured type feel where as I76 I could have drum brakes, aircraft brakes, 30 cal machineguns on one side or 50 cal on both sides etc. It was all about options and you really needed to think about how you wanted your car to feel.

I hope that in Mad Max it won't be as arcadey (spellcheck didn't pick that up so it must be a word) as most games. Id like to have to work for my parts and have them get damaged so I have to repair or find new ones. I seriously doubt this but a crafting aspect would be cool.

Im not saying I can or will but if someone wanted to propose a new game to a company or pay them to make it how would you do it?

Ahh the memories of playing this online... Nitro pack was the best, I loved those cliff maps and CTF.
Yeah I think Mad max is probably the closest thing we are gonna get now. Activision probably won't make another Interstate game anytime soon. 82 was really bad too... It's like all the creativity of the first 2 releases(I76+Nitro pack) and focus on gameplay disappeared. And, yeah, the getting out of the car thing...
I doubt Madmax will have as fun of online mode though. Sometimes it was just fun sitting at the airport, waiting for someone to drive by and send 4 rockets into them... Man I miss Interstate online.

Playing that online was way cool.

My strategy was to have forward and rearward firing homing missiles.

Then I would go in circles and fire forwards when they were in front of me and fire backwards when they were behind me. I rarely lost this way.

I still have the disk which had some pretty cool funky music which I think I remember you could play in a regular CD player.

What about Carmageddon Reincarnation? It still has some quirks and bugs but it's fun to romp around in.

No ideas in regards to similar games, but boy does this thread bring back memories. This game was bundled with my microsoft force feedback pro joystick. Kids these days think their console controllers are fancy because they vibrate. That joystick would fight you in sharp turns, and give a solid thunk when you would fire the big guns. I wish there was a simple way to make it compatible with my modern desktop.

Not the same at all...
I76 isn't a racing game. Plus, theres no guns and you dont mount weapons to your car, in Carmegeddon.
I76 is a completely different genre into itself. It was a stunt based/free for all/CTF/wild west type of setting. Half the stuff you did online you communicated to people and just did it. I remember a bowl map that we would go destruction derby on. The game didn't have a DD mode or anything, you would just get some people and go drive around this bowl and try to run into each other. Same thing with the stunt maps, there wasn't a scoring system, we just drove around and hit jumps cause it was fun to do it with others... CTF was the meat and potatoes. Man I really miss playing this game....
