I'm trying to put my new computer together, top system in my sig, and I can't get the HSF to stay locked into the motherboard. I hear the clips "click" and when I turn the plastic screws, they usually pop back out. Is there a trick to getting this thing installed? It feels like all four click down, but only one of them stays connected. I feel like I'm pushing too hard, and might be damaging the mobo.
 
Nevermind...I had to wiggle the pins a bit, but now it seems secure. I like the Socket 478 clips MUCH MUCH better.
 
i must have fucked with that HSF for an hour before I got it right. I didn't know if I was locked, unlocked, stuck or stupid. I think I was the latter :)

I finally got it though.
 
LGA775 stock heatsink design is terrible IMO. I've only used it with like 3 boards, and each one it bent the board a lot (you can see the curve looking down the top edge)

AMD heatsinks ftw :)
 
Dear god man, you just push it in till it clicks and thats it, dont turn jack. I am postive the retail heatsink came with instructions, try reading them.

oh and the bent board is called the cpu clamping preload and is there by design for a very good reason.

Yeah, i have to agree, there is no twisting involved with the installing of the heatsink. It's just put it down, push the pins into the motherboard, and there ya go. Took me about 20 seconds to install it.

Pardon me for wanting to be a little cautious woth $600 worth of new hardware. And just so you don't need to ASSume anymore, I did read the manual, and had the pins sligned properly, so that no twisting was needed.
 
After dealing with 478 heat sinks and such...775 is a pain in the balls....there's really no way to tell if its locked...it felt like I broke the mb..still not sure yet since I cant fire up my system until I get a new PSU

Well after reading the above you can see how I thought you didnt have a clue.

I imagine you have it sorted out by now, but if there is still any question as to if the pins are properly installed, take it out of the case and put the mb on a thin sheet of foam or corragated cardboard and really give em a good push. You can then flip it over and inspect the pins on the backside for proper attachement. If you do that in the case it really stresses/bends the board and gets scary.

I learned the hard way to install lthe heatsink on the board before mounting in the case, had several machines that would randomly reboot and it was because one pin was not all the way popped in and the heatsink was not exactly flat on the cpu.
 
I actually like how the heatsink is for socket 775, but I have never worked with socket 478...only 939 and socket A. I have my own small computer business and I used to sell just AMD machines, but I may switch over to intel now because of how cheap the e6300 is. I'll just have to charge a little bit more for each machine.

I was so frustrated with it that i ran to frys and bought a crappy 20dollar coolermaster heatsink
 
My stock heatsink wouldn't sit properly after 5 mounts...i heard the clicks, i did the diagonal mount, I eyed the motherboard, I got arctic silver, wiped everything off with 90% pure rubbing alcohol, the whole bit. My temps were like 75c load at stock speed.

It's a POS, that heat sink. I got an Arctic 7 Freezer Pro and I am a happy camper.
 
They are annoying, not because they are hard to install, but because they are loud as hell and dont provide sufficient cooling :)

No problem here with sound or cooling. At stock speed my idle temps never got above 37C on a warm day. Overclocked it idles at 50C with the fan spinning at 1000 RPM. At that speed you can't even hear it. 50C may be warm but I've had no problems with it. It's certainly not the best cooling solution, but it will get you by until you can get something better.

Mine isn't loud and is decent at cooling... but it is just a bitch to install. One of the clips broke so it doesn't go on all the way anymore...
 
Hmm...I've used the Intel retail HSF and it works. My gripe isn't anything about the install, it's the cooling ability. I also just got an AC Freezer 7 Pro and I'm content. I did use the stock HSF and did 3.2Ghz with a E6600 chip though. I can't really complain. I've installed maybe 3 or 4 of them in my life and they've all gone on pretty easily. Maybe I'm just lucky.
 
heh, the stock Intel cooler is EASY to install. np at all with that. It's intalling a Scythe Infinty with fat fingers that is really hard. Took me like an hour to install that SOB! But I did get it installed and I'm very happy with it. I think the Scythe cooler was telling me something about my fingers, with all the cuts and everything.
 
I think it might be that not every one of their heatsinks is the same. Quality control problems maybe. Cause a lot of the LGA775 heatsinks I've installed were not as easy as AMD's heatsinks. Not that it's hard or complicated, but sometimes it just doesn't work properly. Like I said before one of my heatsinks, the clip is damaged and does not snap into the motherboard. The technicians I work with also agree that the LGA775 stock heatsink is crap.

Your kidding right? There is not a heatsink out there for 15 thats better. Mine will do over 3.2 using the stocker and temps at 40c. THe thing installs in less than 20 seconds. I did not even change the compound on the hunch Intel was using good shit and you no what? I am very happy with it s performance..


Granted i will go aftermarket and go to 3.6 ghz eventually but the stocker is no slouch by any stretch of the imagination.
 
They aren't a lot of fun to install. The trick is making sure the direction of the arrows is correct. Twisting the clips in the direction of the arrows releases the clips from the motherboard.

Once snapped in you can actually pick up the whole motherboard/CPU assembly by the stock heatsink and fan. Though I don't recommend it, it is very secure. As far as cooling performance, the stock cooler is adequate for most applications and is even good enough for some mild overclocking.

I got my 90nm Pentium 4 550 to 3.85GHz from 3.4GHz on the stock Intel heatsink and fan which has been unchanged since LGA775 processors came out and is currently being packaged with Core 2 Duo processors today. Past 3.85GHz I had to use a Swiftech heatsink and a kickass fan to do better. But I was able to get higher after that. (3.95GHz)

On the [H]'s 3.73EE processor, I got the processor to 4.340GHz stable on the stock heatsink and fan during the P5B Deluxe review. Anymore and I experienced thermal throttling issues. I will grant you the fact that my computer room and house in general is kept pretty cold, but even still the stock Intel cooler isn't that bad anymore.

I did it inside the mobo once for my brothers PC and it didnt go so well, it had to be taken off and reseated, when i did my Core 2 system i did it before putting the board in the case and it went alot smoother, you still have to push pretty damn hard though. My temps are not bad, ides at liker 48C and after about 2 hours of Serious same 2 on max settings it was at about 58, BF2, CSS and HL2 make it sit at about 55C, so not bad for a E6700 i dont think, i also doing find it that loud either. I did apply my own thermal paste though and removed that pad.

Yes, you really need to install those things with the motherboard outside the case.
 
They are very secure, i installed my si-128 and picked the whole motherboard up and turned it upside down just holding the fan clipped on the heatsink, i did hold the motherboard in case but, i think that it is a very goog test to do because if it falls in the case it can turn out to be horrible

I don't think anyone here is saying that their HSF is not secured to the motherboard well enough, just that it is annoying the way you mount the stock heatsink. AMD's design is much simpler, and you can pick those up by the heatsink also.

And SI-128 != Stock LGA775 heatsink :p
 
I was worried about pressing as hard as I was on the board, but it worked. My temps while playing BF2 are only like 48c according to speedfan.. e6300

but then again, it says temp3 is 117c, and i have no idea what that is, nor does anything smell like its burning up, lol

I always mount the HSF before mounting the motherboard on new builds. While reading helped, I got it right the first time. It was when I remounted to put arctic silver on my first LGA775 build that I wasn't sure if the pins really clicked. This was 2 years ago and I've done it several times since. It's not a big deal. This coming from a guy who can sometimes be really clumsy. The guys who screw it up must be real orangutans.
 
What's funny is that some people don't understand that not all of us buy $700 worth of equipment, and come home, slamming it together like a monkey who just learned to use tools. Coming from all Socket 478 designs, where no pushing or strain on the motherboard was necessary, something just didn't seem right. Rather than snap my board in two, I chose to be cautious. Anyway, it's on and the system is working fine, so I'm closing the thread. Thanks to those who had the common sense to stay on topic.
