I'm sure I'll have some problems, and therefore questions, so I started a new thread ;)

I hope this works! I really want to help out with the Chimp Challenge, and my Quad is aching to fold :) Following the guide that Tiger wrote! Still installing the VMware Server thingy now so... I'll update in a bit :)
 
Should I be worried? Just got a bunch of alert things like this:

Windows requires a digitally signed driver..
A recently installed program tried to install an unsigned driver. This version of Windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature. The driver is unavailable and the program that uses this driver might not work correctly
Uninstall the program or device that uses this driver and check the publishers support website to get a digitally signed driver.

Driver: VMware USB monitor
Service: VMware hcmon

Another says
Driver: BMware kernel driver
Service: VMware vmx86

Ahh...
 
I can't help you with the VMs, but if you have problems setting them up right now you can instead temporarily run 2 instances of the SMP client in two separate folders. Each folder/instance would need it's own machine ID number in the config file. Then run affinity changer to balance the work load better between all the cores. Typically you double your ppd and only require 50% more processing time running two instances of SMP.
If you have to turn off the SMP clients once they are BOTH running save each work folder and the que file first, turn of the clients and then replace those folders/files before restarting and you won't lose any work. This isn't as fancy as VMs but it gets the job done fast and we need some points now for [H]ardApe.

Are you running Vista ?

If you want to get Vista to work with unsigned drivers, reboot.
As it finishes the POST and before Windoze starts to load, hit F8.
You can set it to run with unsigned drivers in that menu screen.

Question - this does not pertain to VM, but to the OS itself, so don't worry you aren't helping the enemy ;)

Do you have to do the menu every time for unsigned drivers to work? If so, there really needs to be a hack for that to remain permanent...

Yes, you must do this every time. In the past, there is a registry hack to disable it permanently but a patch fixed that loophole unfortunately.

Anyway, if you are folding 24/7, you aren't supposed to shutdown at all (unless you fold for OCF) :p

 
bah. Just turn off UAC, install affinity changer, and 2x 5.91 SMP clients..... takes about 5 minutes. :D

Funny that you mention shutting down though, because my vista install has a common bug that has yet to be fixed, where I have to force a reboot for it to work again. Naturally, this hosed my WUs and I had to start OVER from 91% on a 1760 WU!! BAH! FACK VISTA!!

Umm yeah, that's what i did. I tried the VM for a while, but me being the curious type tried to get ubuntu setup so it was actually usable for me. Once I borked it pretty thoroughly I went back to winSMP :)

It took me three or four goes before I got a disk image that had most of the functions I wanted on, that worked.
If still think it would be 50/50 if I tried to build another disk image that worked.
So now I just clone the image between my boxen, changing the share name where needed.

Grrrrrrrr.. I have been trying to figure out how to install this thing for DAYS now. I'm following the intructions and I can't even get passed like the 5th step. I install the VM Server, and then when I open it (As administrator) it asks for Host Name, User Name and password. What.. are those? What is the Host name? I tried my computers name, my profiles name, and everything else. And the user name? Don't I have to make one first or something?

I can't go to Help and then put in the Serial number, it's just grayed out and I can't click on it.. but I have the serial number. I can't stand this :( I'm so aggravated that I still can't get this to work yet.. Watching my old Dell slowly fold while my new fast computer does nothing is really annoying.

*takes deep breath* Please someone help me :( I have been using the guide from Tiger.
 
I would just use the dual SMP client in windows for now, its pretty straight forward.

Can not get the SMP client to work on my computer. Everyone tried to help me figure out why, but it just wouldn't let me use it. The graphical client also just gets stuck in a neverending loop of "Downloading Core" "Core Error: waiting for retry". Grrr...

Edit: Actually it was the text client I had problems with.. How do I run the SMP clients? I only see Linux and Mac ones??

Edit again: Nevermind, After finding the page with the SMP clients, I realized that I did try it.. the 5.91 one.. and it never worked.
 
When you startup VMWare Server, you should see an option to start as Local Host or the second option will be to start with Machine Id | Account | Password. Start as local host.

It only gives me one option. And when I first open it, it gives me the little "Connect to Host" box with the Host name, Username and Password. There's nothing else aside from that.

I believe that your OS is borked when it come to network settings. Normally, there is a Local host radio button you are supposed to select to enter, not the remote host.

Have you considered reinstalling the OS so things work properly and avoid damaging your nice hair ? :D

are you using Vista? Did you deactivate UAC?

I see where your going wrong.
Host name, etc, etc are only needed if you are going to connect to a host over the intranet.

You need to start it in "Local Host" mode to be able to find/make the virtual disk on your computer.
If the "Local Host" mode is grayed out in Vista then you need to run with unsigned drivers.
Reboot and just before the end of the POST, hit F8 to get to the Windoze loading options. Select run with unsigned drivers.
This is one of the major reasons I'm still running XP & not Vista on my boxen.

Uhm... Where do you choose "Local Host" mode? I'm such a noob :(

And Oh God I really don't want to reinstall my OS again :(
 
Syribo, I just noticed you are running Vista 64 bits. You need to reboot the computer and hit F8 just before the OS load. When you will see a menu (Safe mode, Safe mode with networking, etc...), select "Disable driver signing enforcement" then let it boot to desktop. When you are settled, start VMWare and you will see a radio button for Local Host.

Tigerbiten is wrong about F6, it's F8 actually.

Your right Xilikon.

You need to hit F8 not F6.
F6 is for loading Raid & SCSI drivers when installing a Windoze OS.

..You know, I was told to do that before, and I did it.. but then forgot I had restarted my computer last night, so.. I just rebooted it and chose that option and NOW see Local Host. Thank you so much :)

Going to continue on my journey of getting this working.. I'll be back with more questions most likely ;)

Mmm... at least this wonderful lunch put me in a better mood :D Chicken cutlet hero with american cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo.. with Blazin' Buffalo and Ranch Doritos, and a nice cool Arizona Iced Tea :D

I just finished up to that part. I made two, Colourforms1 and Colourforms2, do I need to do all of those steps again, but instead for ColourForms2 now?

Right now I'm downloading the CentOS5.1.iso file.. I think I'm still doing everything correct so far.. I hope :)

Also, I gave the VM 1.5GB of memory... I have 8GBs on this computer though, maybe I should have gone for at least 2?
 
You can always increase the allocated memory later. You have the memory available on your PC so 2GB per VM wouldn't hurt it.
 
1.5 GB per VM is plenty. Increasing more doesn't give anything.

Okay thanks :) Also, no one answered.. Since I'm downloading the .iso now (And it's only 40% done), should I make ColourForms2 now? I have to do the whole process for both ColourForms1 and ColourForms2 (Those are the names I chose) yes?
 
Sorry, just work on ColourForms1 to the end then you will just make a copy and configure it to ColourForms2. No need to install both VM straight from scratch ;)

I have configured a VM image with Xubuntu 8.04, configured everything right like I wanted then put it aside as a "Master" copy then made 2 VM per quad. I did 6 total with the same image and it take just 10 mins per image to configure it individually (mainly setting a static IP, giving a unique computer name and reseting the FAH client infos).

Okay I get it :) I may not be a complete technical noob, I know quite a bit about computers and such, but I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to Linux or Ubuntu and VMs ;) So thanks for all the help heh.

-> CD-Rom.
You can either point it at your CD/DVD drive and put a CD/DVD in or point it at a copy of a Linux.iso.
I use the CentOS-5 DVD iso from Here.
I found this better than the Ubuntu 7.1 iso as I can more easily configure exactly what minimum modules to install."

At that point right now. Uhm... How do I get it to point at the .iso I downloaded? Hard Drive? I'm not sure which to choose. This is the screen I am at right now:

Select "Use ISO image" and point it to the downloaded iso. When you boot the VM it'll mount the iso as if it were a physical CDROM connected to it.

Your fun and games are very much like the fun and games I had, when I first set my disk image up.
But once you have your image working it only takes 5-10 mins to install-configure the next image.

Okay.. I'm stuck now. I installed it and rebooted it, and when I open up VMware I get a screen saying:
CentOS release 5
etc etc etc etc

Zero login: _

Zero is my computer name by the way... But I don't see where you go to Authentication? Is it a separate file? Because I can not figure it out. Am I supposed to login? I tried logging in but it won't work no matter what name or password I put in.. More help for the noob please <3 :)
