I'm considering taking the Dual Core/DDR2/PCI-e plunge and have a setup in mind. Looking for some constructive criticism on where I may be lacking.

CPU AM2 X2 3600+ Brisbane $67

MoBo XFX 590 (foxcon rebadged) $97

Ram Crucial 1066 DDR2 2 x 1GB $90 + free 2gb usb flash drive

Vid 8800GTS 640mb ~$300
(need good deal)

The plan is to OC the 3600 to ~2.8 on air with my Zalman 9700. Hopefully the cpu won't bottle neck me at that point. Also, I chose the 640 over the 320 because I'm using a 2407 and would like to run at the native 1920x1200. Not knocking the 320, but have read the 640 really steps up once rez goes above 1640x1050. Also, if YOU were to build this rig and came up with an extra $50, where would you put it?

Will be using this rig to raid in WoW, play some BF2 and possibly Obliv soon along with some NFS.

I've got the OK from the Wifey  for $500 with a 10% swing, so $554 for all this is really close to my max, if not a tad over. :D

Would love to see some input from the pros, and the rest of you peeps, too. LOL

Looks pretty good, make sure you get a good PSU, especially if you plan on any overclocking. It might not be a bad idea to toss a little more money into the CPU and get into the 4000+ range.

And being from Corsair, they are better known.

The RAM the OP posted is a great choice. Crucial is every bit as recognized as Corsair, they just choose not over-inflate their capabilities with needless marketing.

ditto.

Crucial is the company behind the D9GMH chips. (it's a division of Micron)

If you are open to suggestions:

$117 - e4300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115013
$99 ($79 after mail-in rebate) - eVGA 650i Ultra http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188017

I got the exact MB and CPU. You'll have a easy overclock to 3.1Ghz. That would be both a safe and easy setup. The Allendale will out pace the Brisbane by a good margin even at the same frequency. At just $117 you get quite a bit more performance. Also, the 650i boards are stable and fast, so long as you don't need SLI.

The ram looks to be a steal, man. Nice find. As far as the 640MB 8800 GTS for $300, closest I could find was $339. http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/d...-GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB DDR3 PCIe-Video Cards

In my opinion though, you would be better off getting the 320Mb 8800GTS. You will get better frame rates going down to the 320Mb and switching to the C2D, than staying with the 640Mb and the Brisbane. Not to mention you will have much more processing power for things other than gaming. Here is a decent 320Mb price but I've seen some better deals out there. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133193

I can't stress enough how much a better deal the e4300 is though. The release of the 650i Ultra boards made a very good overclocking duo accessible on the cheap. I run them right now and sit at 3.6 stable. It seems the Allendale cores are OC'ing a little better now days! Good luck man, happy gaming. :D

Well I just picked up a E6300 for a good price from someone who's prob going Q6600 in 3 weeks. So now I just need a good MB around the ~$100 mark or close to it. Anyone got a suggestion. Would love to stay Nvidia based with SLI. And an OC able board would be great since I like to tweek. Suggestions?

Looking really hard at the Evga 680i TR since the NF63 chip is supposedly a godly OC'er for the E6300. I've heard it won't OC well on a Quad but not looking at going quad anytime soon. Who knows, by the time I'm looking to upgrade next AMD/ATI may have my buisness.

You're going to have a tough time finding a 640mb 8800 GTS for $300. The cheapest I've seen was a BFG card on sale at Best Buy for $316, but after taxes and shipping it was back up around $340. I think it just might be out of you league unless you're willing to sacrifice something else for it.

For me to hit the $300 mark, I'm looking to buy an XFX used with the double lifetime warranty or an EVGA that was never registered. Just a waiting game I'm sure, but who knows?

WOOT, just lucked up and snaged a 8800gts 640! My gaming rig is now complete, ok well it's all completely in the mail! LOL

Once everything gets here I'll have a

e6300
Asus Striker Extreme
eVGA 8800gts 640mb
Crucial Ballistix 2x1gb 800's
Antec TruPower II 480
Dell 2407 rev A03
Logitech G15 & MX510
Altec Lansing 251
Plantronics DSP 400
WD 250gb SATA

Now I'll finally play TRIBES wide open! LOL /roll eyes

All I can say is my next main stream FPS will have WS support or I"M NOT BUYING!

Should handle it, but will test the total wattage used to see how close it gets. Hopefully it won't go passed 420w under full load.
