Take it for what it's worth. Source article here.

In an E3 interview, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling confirmed that the company is trying to "reach out" to PC gamers, as well as that the company would be adding "certain features" specific to the PC version. The big question on everybody's lips was of course "Will your game have dedicated servers?!" to which his answer was "We’re looking at ways to incorporate that into Modern Warfare 3".

Non-committal? Of course, but you've got to be these days, or you'll regret it later. "In Modern Warfare 2 we added IWnet, which was all about matchmaking–with the plan to eventually add in dedicated servers," said Bowling.

"My ideal philosophy on the PC is to have matchmaking for the 'mass'. Have matchmaking for the guys who just want to jump in, hit 'play game' and start playing. But let’s not lose that dedicated core audience that wants the dedicated server experience."

Well thats one good news about MW3

Perhaps they are now feeling the pressure from BF3 where DICE has gone further than many dev to give the PC platform that something extra. I hope this would turn into a trend.

I'm happy that DICE is doing that, I have to say that adding dedicated servers is not 'extra'. It used to be normal for games to have it.

I don't understand the mentality that giving us features they used to, is them doing us a favor. I've said before that eventually games are going to start advertising their 'light' DRM as a marketing tool to sell copies ... Games used to have light/no DRM, and it wasn't an extra or marketing tool then.

Having it in cod4 then removing it, they are figuring out ways to add it back? Yeah right. Pass.

I thought this was standard on PC, one of the main advantages?

It used to be. Then they figured they'd remove it for MW2 and see if it gave a better experience. Nerdrage ensued, PC gamers cried on forums, made STEAM boycott groups, then 5mins later bought the game and it broke sales records.

Heh.

Dbl post.

Lol "We’re looking at ways to incorporate that into Modern Warfare 3"

I am fking sick of this GSP only for dedicated servers or GSP only for ranked server. Bunch of sh*t. More then likely BF3 is going to be like that and if IW are going to do dedicated servers they will likely do the same.

People should have woken up enough by now to know not to buy into this pathetic attempt to save face and reach out to a group of customers which they've repeatedly let down in the past.

If they think that the vauge possibility of bringing back a feature we've had for years, is in some way going to gain them PC gamer cred, it's not.

It just sends out a reminder to all the gamers as to why we're all going to buy BF3 instead and forget that the CoD franchise ever existed.

what is there to look into? iwnet is better anyway....

Like hell it is. You have to spend several minutes in the bullshit lobby while it finds enough players to get a match going. Then of course the one who gets chosen as the host has to deal with the extra overhead of hosting the game and of course they get a zero ping or near zero ping. No one else gets that. Then if the host quits the game has to migrate to a new host. (All of which is bullshit I saw far too often in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.) You have no control over match time limits, you can't kick cheating players and the hacking in MW2 is the most rampant of any multiplayer FPS game I've ever played. And among the worst offenses is the gimpy player limits on each game type which isn't even the same for all the given game types. 4 vs. 4 for free for all? Fuck that. 9 vs. 9 maximum? Fuck that too. I want 32, 48 and 64 player matches.

Despite a lot of the flaws, I think Modern Warfare 2 was a better game than I expected it to be, but I didn't get a 1/4 of the enjoyment I got from CoD4MW or BLOPS. I never bothered to level up all the way in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 because it just wasn't that much fun and the short time limits and low player count, and low score limits never really gave me a chance to get going in a match. Every time I'd get settled into the match and really start racking up the kills the fucking match was over.

I won't be paying $60 for the same type of experience. I bought BLOPS because it had dedicated servers and that made all the difference in the world to me. It was the best CoD experience since CoD4MW.

Cod matchmaking is fine, others I want dedicated servers. Cod is for fun where I wanna play right away, everything else is for fun too but a different kind of fun.

So instantly downloading a huge list which is sortable with an array of filters shoved in your face on a silver platter isn't fast enough for you?

Really?

Lol. Sorting through all the tactical and stupid rules servers takes a while. You can't even say shit in some even though the game is mature. Like I said, for cod I just wanna play, I don't give 2 shits about servers in cod after. Blops.

There's really no reason why a game couldn't have both options though.

No there isn't. BLOPS actually has matchmaking for the zombie mode and dedicated servers for standard multiplayer. So it can be done. Even if I don't see the need for the bullshit match making crap. And actually now that I think about it, the Aliens vs. Predator game did both as well.

Or just make matchmaking have actual servers. As in, it chooses the best server for everyone and therefore eliminates a shitty host and wont allow anyone to have a massive advantage.

Tbh, I would take the option of both matchmaking and dedicated servers. I just had a great experience for the most part with matchmaking so I enjoy it.

I'm done with IW, end of story. I don't care how much Activision is pushing them; it's no excuse for MW2 and now this. If they can't commit to delivering something that's been a key part of online PC gaming since pretty much the beginning, screw them. Matchmaking didn't work with MW2 and it's not going to work with MW3. They say they planned on adding it to MW2? That's bullshit; I doubt that they spent any time developing anything for MW2 after release besides patches. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they admitted that they had all of the DLC finished before release, and have pretty much been working on MW3 since MW2 went gold.

I don't support any company that pretty much treats their older games as abandonware while still charging full price for them.

The lack of dedicated servers would make this game just as passable as MW2. There's no custom content, therefore MW2 will be dead as soon as MW3 comes out (if it isn't already because of BLOPS), and MW3 will be dead as soon as the next CoD comes out. An online FPS simply cannot thrive without the ability for users to add custom content such as maps and game types. Look at CS and CS:S. Both games have a huge amount of players still, and there are pretty much an equal amount playing each game, even though CS is over 11 years old and over 4 years older than CS:S. Why is this? It's because both games are extremely open to modification, even letting you go as far as to change the way players and weapons look client side. I hate devs that think that they are gods and no one else could possibly improve on their products.

Fuck you, you guys could create a better game than CoD4, and i STILL would not buy your game, just on principle.

you mean like how MW2 is still 59.99 same as Blackops and COD4 and WaW only came down in the last 6 months?

Could not agree more Dan, I've never seen so many cheaters in an FPS game as I did when I played MW2. The current system that's employed by IW is awful just awful. I don't expect that Activision will reverse its stance however on using dedicated servers. Perhaps as its been suggested for "Elite" members to host games but certainly not for everyone.

It truly makes little sense for an FPS game not to use a dedicated server. I love large player count team death match games too but I won't be up for another MW2 experience no matter what they offer. I did manage to hit max level but I didn't bother with Prestige. The only reason I even lasted through that was playing with friends , but if I did it on my own I would quite within a week or two. I sure do remember the massive weapon imbalances , Javelin instant explosion trick , dual wielding 1887's and so many more .. really don't know why I didn't quit from the get go. COD:BO didn't have any of those weird imbalances just a shitty lag spiking frame rate issues.

COD:BO really is the best entry since COD4 , but I'm moving on to BF3 as that looks the most promising.

Maybe throwing some new levels at MW2 didn't take as long as they expected, so they've got some time to kill.

Like hell it was. Not even remotely.

P.s. haha looks like I stole Dan's words :)

People should have woken up enough by now to know not to buy into this pathetic attempt to save face and reach out to a group of customers which they've repeatedly let down in the past.

People will still buy into this and buy their game only to get shafted later or pay a fee for it.

There is this amazing thing called a "favorites" list. ZOMG!
