Infernal Engine VELOCITY Physics PS3 Demo

finally someone who wants to learn and use the PS3
took long enough

That was really smooth, I didn't really notice any slow downs. Very impressive.

Wait till you see the PC stuff. Friggin nutso!

I'm kinda getting excited for this game... if not for the Nostalgia that it brings.

Looks like their physics engine still suffers from rigid body "guesstimating". Note the jitter of the female body and the cars when they should be resting on a table.

I really wonder when physics engines are going to move past that.

And then I really wonder when they're going to do full fluid dynamics

I saw the small jitter as well. Something I have come to accept. I was just glad to see character bodies interacting without all the clipping I am used to seeing when it comes to bodies and objects colliding. There was one instance where a foot clipped into a table but the rest looked near perfect.

Also, the VELOCITY Physics engine will scale "infinitely," so I guess it is up to Intel and AMD for full fluid dynamics.

Any word on whether they're going to support an OpenCL version on the PC side for hardware physics support?

To my knowledge no. In fact Mark Randel, "head coder" for the Infernal Engine made it pretty clear that he thought that physics should be handled by the CPU and the GPU left for processing graphics.

That said, I will ask the question of Joe Kreiner, VP of Infernal Engine Sales, to get you a specific answer.

OK..very nice...but why make a game based on a movie that is 25 years old. Do they expect all of us late 30/early 40 year olds to buy this?

I have to say from what I saw, I think me and the kids could have a damn good time. I think the scheduled release is in June and it is tied to the 25th anniversary release of Ghost Busters on Blu-ray.

The official answer from Joe Kreiner:

"We don’t have current plans to support OpenCL. Games will continue to use all available GPU power – until that trend changes we’d prefer to offload physics (and tasks other than rendering) onto the CPUs…"

So what if the movie is 25 years old... A cool game is a cool game.

Who do you know that doesn't know what Ghostbusters is?

I am not saying the game isn't cool- I am just questioning if it is a smart investment to make a game based on a movie that most people under the age of 25 have not really seen. Cool game or not, that has to be one of the factors why they had a difficult time getting someone to publish the game.

I don't think it matters. If there is a good buzz about a good game, it will sell. I also think sometimes games based on movies can make buyers a bit wary, due to so many craptacular movie games over the years. Also, with everyone from the age of 8 years old on up getting online, it doesn't take much effort to become educated about the subject of an old movie, they can just watch some clips.

Love your "No GPU needed. Allowed our GPU to do what it should be doing - graphics" remark.

homernoy i'm 26 .. .. don't you remeber ghost busters 2?

even though it sucked... there were kids younger than me that liked it.

when ghostbusters 1 came out my life changed for ever.

Of course I remember Ghost Busters, and I watched it in the theaters when I was young. I was just replying to a post about kids that might not have heard of it and that could affect sales. Personally I have not been around anyone who said that they have never heard of Ghost Busters. The movie anyway.

That's pretty badass. Makes me remember my thoughts wen I first played HL2 and the gravity gun.

i would call this as close to a movie we can get ghost busters since all the original cast is back

I remember the company saying they were developing this game for the PS3 as the lead platform, then moving it to the 360 and PC. That fits right in with what I've read other developers say that making games on PS3 then porting them to 360/PC is much easier than the other way around. Might be why their using all the PS3 power.

Looks pretty good. I'll take a copy ...

I have put this question forth, I would not expect an answer till tomorrow given it is almost 7pm here now.

kyle the red on black video player is bad ass.

Yeah, I am kind of partial to red and black.

Just the truth. ;)

Yeah, all three leads are back for this game and I have to say it is pretty effin cool to hear. You guys will get a taste tomorrow.

I loved the physics of all the falling corpses. This is where Crysis utterly failed when it came to immersion: realistic movements and physics of live objects. Koreans would teleport to the prone position and slide around, and when they died they turned all stiff and fell in the most awkward ways.

ugh I've waited soooooooooo long for a sweet Ghostbusters game! I'm effing psyched!

"Listen! You smell that?" --my favorite quote of all time.

I played through the original Ghostbusters game on my PC jr 20 years ago, lol, so I hope this one can top it :D

I disagree with this wholeheartedly. Do you not remember the MASSIVE toy marketing for this movie? I am 24 and I LOVED the Ghostbusters as a kid, I had a little jumpsuit and a plastic proton pack. Not to mention the cartoon series that ran for several years afterwords. Kids of the 80s or early 90's are going to love this, so anywhere from 20 to 40 year olds is the market for this. I had nearly every toy. Although some of the content in the movie was more teenage or adult appropriate, everyone loves the Ghostbusters. I don't know anyone over the age of 20 who doesn't instinctively think "Ghostbusters" whenever someone says "Who ya gonna call?" or a similar variation of that question.

I dont think its a rehash. Harold Ramis wrote the original movie and he wrote for this game as well IIRC.

And yes every single time I hear "Who you gonna call?" I immediately think Ghostbusters.

To me the ragdoll bodies seem to act like they are made of paper and have little mass. Realistic body physics still isnt there yet. They almost overdo it with the constant moving around when they hit something. Bodies can fall, hit the ground and not have all 4 limbs flail around you know, but in games when bodies hit the floor limbs always flail about it seems.

flailing limbs just adds to the "holy shit, I DID THAT?" effect

Looked really sweet until he dropped the first car and it bounced.
Umm I have seen mythbusters. That car would crumple. Actually it appears on the cars, the windows get blown out, doors open, and bumpers fall off, but there was no denting of the body of the cars.

Cant say it looks terrible, cant say im "WOOOOWED" by it.

This is done without a physx card... oh yeah, we dont need it.

Looks really fun though.
