With the help of raking light and UV light, infrared and X-ray spectroscopy can tell which color was once applied to an object. Let’s just say that these Greek statues aren’t as dull as you once thought.

wow ... I have to say it looks kind of tacky with the colors, especially that overhang, like a cheesy casino color motif

That kills all the coolness and god like image of the statues... they look like average garden gnomes with color

Someone looks at the colors and thinks "Wow, that looks tacky"
What a maroon.
SO, what colors should have been in fashion in 500BC according to you?

If the colors look strange, it maybe because the ancient Greeks had a form of color blindness. They saw colors differently then we do today.

I find it funny that in an effort to insult someone's intelligence, the word maroon was used.

Doubly ironic in that they were talking about colors :D

I said it was tacky! Could have just quoted me rather than refer to me as "someone", and yeah I get it back then, not exactly the wide variety of colors that they have today. But what I'm saying is yeah that looks tacky, by someone living in the 21st century.

Bear in mind that this is probably a computer rendering of the statues using the supposed colors. The statues may not have been quite as bright or "tacky" in real life with natural lighting.

"What a maroon" is what Bugs Bunny would say when describing an idiot. I have a feeling that was what WWCephas was going for.

Is that why vegas looks tacky, All them striplights? :D

Looks tacky now, but that color scheme was probably the new hotness 4000 years ago.

What a maroon? Bugs Bunny? No one else watched Looney Tunes or what?

And yea, I doubt it looked exactly like that. I bet the statues were shaded and colored with the same subtlety and finesse required in their sculpting.

Ever been in a modern Greek's house? It's about 10x as tacky.
This is truth. And since we're looking at representations of a pantheon, you haven't seen garish until you've visited a Hindu temple, like this one in Madurai:
