The father-ship!
This time, it's been seen before. It's nothing new and exciting. It'll be an action movie, and I'm sure it's going to be a very good action movie. But, it's not going to be mind blowing, kick ass, game changing like the first one. I'll definitely be watching it, and I'll love it, but I'll have to refrain from comparisons. It'll have to stand on it's own.
The sequel requires two things to have my buy in. First, I don't care about Will Smith or his weirdo son, but it better have Commander Data in it. And I KNOW that he died in the first movie. I don't care. Bring him back. Second, it needs another scene where the entire world is sitting on their ass doing nothing until the U. S of A decides to fight back, then give us the scene of some accented foreigner saying, "The Americans have a plan? THANK GOD! It's about time! Alright everybody, stop playing soccer and eating that poutine. The Americans have a plan!"
One of the more memorable scenes was when we saw Israeli and Arab pilots teaming up as part of Earth's counter-attack against the aliens. I want to see if they have the jumbo coconut brass balls to have a touchy-feely we're all in this together moment between ISIS, AQ, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Israel and the U.S. all against the ultimate galactic infidels.
Not in the cards, check out the site and read the timeline. This is effectively a split from our universe into it's own once the aliens attacked. They credit alien tech as the origin of touch screens, drones, and bladeless fans. It also shows that Earth has united, signed a planet wide peace treaty, established a Defense force, built three bases on the Moon, Mars, and one of ?Saturn's? moons, Rhea, and the headquarters is in Beijing, China. This would make one assume the Arab Spring never occurred, the US didn't invade Southeast Asia, and ISIS never formed.
I do however find there to be some conflicting ideas going on. If the world has signed a peace treaty and there is a unified defense force, why is the US Army still around and where are they deployed using hybrid alien weaponry?
Peace only works when everyone has the same size gun.
Also, preparedness.

Oh and I get preparedness, but again, the site says people are skeptical about deploying these weapons but their fears are eased when they see their effectiveness. To me that says they're being used in more than testing/proof of concept.
The first movie made it clear that this was a nomadic race that had long ago stripped its home of resources and transferred to the giant colony ship. Scouts were sent out looking for good targets for extreme strip-mining, hence the Area 51 ship, then the Big Bad would arrive.
When they killed the mother-ship, they killed the entire civilization. I wonder what lame rationalizations will paper over that.
Well you see... There were more than one 'mothership', and it just so happens that one of them came to Earth; now that it was 'sploded, one of the other motherships caught wind of it, they came for revenge.
Damn, I should've submitted this before anyone else.
Lol...
"I have a plan! The Americans have jets! But we have bombs! So, since this is the right time, we will get abducted, and then boom! We will be rewarded for destroying the infidel space people!"
Wonder exactly why the didn't get Will Smith back for this one
Roland Emerich wanted Will Smith to be in it and asked him many times. I read an article that Will Smith said that he didn't want his career to be known for doing sequels or something to that extent. I don't understand that because he did three MIB movies and is going to do a Bad Boys sequel too. I also heard that he wanted 50 million dollars to reprise his role.
Jaden would run this movie into the ground.
Will Smith has had an amazing career. The man can act in pretty bear any genre. A true actor.
This is going to be an odd movie. The first one was AMAZING. When it was released, it had 30 minute TV spots (masquerading as news spots), and it was a huge deal. War of the Worlds in the modern times. Just blew everyone out of the water. ID4 wasn't just a movie - it was an event.

I watched that entire trailer waiting for the epic unveiling of Will Smith, simply because he SHOULD be there. I fear that entire movie may end up leaving you disappointed with the young Will Smith look-alike (his son from the first?) trying to fill his shoes.
It seems solid so far to me. I'm looking forward to it. The F-22 accident is plausible enough and they are going to have a lot of the other cast members back (a conference video last July shows a bunch of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PW_QDmZRaw ). I don't think they need him this time. It would have been a bit cliche to have him back and then likely save the world again, or stick him in a supporting role which he probably wouldn't want.
