Now that's what I call a close encounter.

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Well, what do you know, the new telemetry features of Windows 10 saves the world by infecting the alien supercore!

So in the first movie they gained nothing from having the alien fighter ship from Area 51 for 50 years.

but in 20 years after the first movie they can practically take on the Galactic Empire? talk about insane R&D.

Shame that Will Smith isn't reprising his role. I enjoyed his character in the first.

I'll watch it too. But what I fear is without Will Smith there won't be all these memorable moments.

I was kind of disappointed initially then thought if he were in it, so would his son, Jaden Smith and I cannot stand that kid.

Lol, very true. However, I've only seen him along side Jackie Chan and that was several years ago. So I have an old opinion of him

Jaden would run this movie into the ground.

Will Smith has had an amazing career. The man can act in pretty bear any genre. A true actor.

I didn't even realize they dropped him from the movie. I just thought they weren't showing him yet.

Yeah, a good way of 'writing' him out of the sequel.

Wonder exactly why the didn't get Will Smith back for this one, could be a money issue, or contractual crap again, who knows but it would be interesting to find out the actual reason(s). Seemed like a no brainer if they could get Jeff Goldblum back, and several others from the first movie as clearly shown in the trailer.

Can't imaging his work on "Suicide Squad" would get in the way but maybe.

All this thread has done is make me want to watch Independence Day!

There are so many "classics", but this one is definitely it.

I'm ok with him not in it. Maybe we will get better story from the salary savings. No way Will would do it without asking a ridiculous paycheck.

According to an interview I just looked up it was a mix of him just being too expensive to hire now, them not wanting him to take all the attention away from the smaller actors by being the one that everyone thinks of when they think of the movie and him not wanting to be known as the sequel guy.

Apparently, in a deleted scene in the original movie, they mention that all the major tech advancements of the 20th century were based on the original Area 51 alien ship. That's why a MacBook was able to interface with the alien ship. It was based on their tech.

God forbid if Jeff Goldblom dies. Nobody will save the planet from flies, aliens or dinosaurs after that. Apparently he's the only person capable of intelligent thinking in the movies.

This trailer looks like X-COM the MOVIE!

I saw Independance Day on opening night (remember when it was temporarily renamed ID4?) and then ended up seeing it again with friends the next day as a matinee. Since I was already aware of the jump scare when the possessed scientist is smushed against the observation glass, I didn't jump back into my seat. However, nearly everyone else in the packed theater did and the room shook from the collective force of it.

In 1996, everyone in Dallas was on Prozac. When that scene played, the whole theater yawned. :p

The first movie made it clear that this was a nomadic race that had long ago stripped its home of resources and transferred to the giant colony ship. Scouts were sent out looking for good targets for extreme strip-mining, hence the Area 51 ship, then the Big Bad would arrive.

When they killed the mother-ship, they killed the entire civilization. I wonder what lame rationalizations will paper over that.

The fact that they got Jeff Goldblum is all that matters. It will probably kind of suck but I will watch it and love it anyway just because. And I admit it.

The sequel requires two things to have my buy in. First, I don't care about Will Smith or his weirdo son, but it better have Commander Data in it. And I KNOW that he died in the first movie. I don't care. Bring him back. Second, it needs another scene where the entire world is sitting on their ass doing nothing until the U. S of A decides to fight back, then give us the scene of some accented foreigner saying, "The Americans have a plan? THANK GOD! It's about time! Alright everybody, stop playing soccer and eating that poutine. The Americans have a plan!"

One of the more memorable scenes was when we saw Israeli and Arab pilots teaming up as part of Earth's counter-attack against the aliens. I want to see if they have the jumbo coconut brass balls to have a touchy-feely we're all in this together moment between ISIS, AQ, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Israel and the U.S. all against the ultimate galactic infidels.

    Lol...

"I have a plan! The Americans have jets! But we have bombs! So, since this is the right time, we will get abducted, and then boom! We will be rewarded for destroying the infidel space people!"
