I'm torn... PS3 or 360?

No the display is damn good except for it´s HDMI output being slightly worse then VGA of course. It´s still way better then my 24" TN panel. My brother have the top of the line hd ready pioneer plasma of the last generation... Honestly yes it´s slightly better because of better contrast and true blacks but otherwise my lcd run neck to neck with it. His is 50" and mine is 32" though which of course make the image sharper :).

So it´s nothing wrong with my tv except as mentioned hdmi port isn´t that good. Is there no way to connect the bluray to the PC.

As for the PC the nvidia purevideo dekoder really makes a difference. It´s a must really. It was the best out there when I bought it. Disabling it the colours get much more like on the PS 3 but still better... Not sure if ATI have something better now. The thing is you need to tweak to get the best image possible especially on LCD:s... Amazing what difference different players do as well.If you install ffd show you will see how much you can adjust the image to get the best results. World of a difference between the output of VLC, cyberlink powerdvd and zoomplayer where zoomplayer is like 5x better than the rest.

I just bought ratatouille so will see how it fairs. I will definiatly look into if I can find a bluray player for the PC and if I then actually can use VGA and not the HDMI port if I ain´t satisfied with the results over Super Heroes and Finding Nemo...

Just got my PS 3... My initial impressions... For one thing I am slightly handicapped with the PS3 because it doesn´t have VGA output. My tv at least gives a better more natural image over VGA. I sold my 360 some months ago but the TV still despite HDMI seem to offer better image quality then my 24" G2400W... Some titles like GRID looks bloody good on it though.

But what I have seen so far... The dvd playback just stinks compared to my PC. 360 dvd playback was not that good either but I want to remember it was better. However again this is definiatly partly due to the VGA output. Would assume they are quite equal if you have a tv with both good hdmi and vga outputs. However they are both not very good compared to PC playback with zoomplayer, ffd show and purevideo decoder.

Bluray I have only downloaded 1080p trailers like Ratatouille which may be compressed still. But here as expected results are much better. The upscaler on the PS 3 doesn´t seem to do a very good job... and the colours are not impressive at all. Lots of noise and some blur as well.

As for games well 90 % of the games from memory looked better on the 360. But really it´s good enough. heavenly sword and GRID looks great. GRID about on par with the 360 version. This depends on how much you like HDR it´s kind of blinding on the PS 3 lol.

Gamepad is really bad compared to the Xbox 360... Far to small and not a button sits exactly where you want it. 360 gamepad got criticism for the D-pad well that sits better here... But you wonder since most games use the analogue stick why prioritize the D-pad over it?

Otherwise it´s really silent. It feels like it´s quality and will hold up. The interface is also a lot better. You can really see how Microsoft just throw their console out one year early whereas Sony waited a year to create a better base package. However the 360 is cheaper, performs better in games. Bluray player don´t impress much for regular DVDs at least if you have a PC or HTPC setup (apart from being cheap).

However I think Sony have more unique games. One of the problem I got with the 360 is that it got so many european/american action titles where most where on the PC and they where all of course better versions on the PC. For about half the price often. Lots of action games/fps etc which mouse/keyboard is preferrable.

games I look forward to is Aqua from ArtDink, Afrika (hakuna matata), little big planet, uncharted. Okay Uncharted is probably one of these action titles lol, GT 5P.

So well it´s quite sure we will have this discussions in eternity from my experience with them. None of them is obviously not even near the PC if you look at the whole picture :)

Based on your quote alone, i'm gonna say you have a 32 or 37 inch westinghouse...

DVD's and HD content are spectacular on a PS3 with a color calibrated display over HDMI.

It´s a Sony KDL32V2000 also known as XBR 1 in the US. top of the line when I got it and I am still more then happy with it.

I now watched Ratatouille and well what a world of difference. Haven´t yet compared it to my PC but this is on a level where it really doesn´t matter it´s my vision that limits lol. Will probably get Dark Knight on Bluray seeing the phenomenal quality on the batman begins dvd... Hope they use the same cameras for the sequel. I don´t remember what they costed to rent but it was astronomical sums...

So great now I know I did the right thing not to go full HD which would have been twice the cost back then lol. It´s great for gaming but I do have my cheap 24" TN panel which is a good complementary monitor so got all my base covered now.

PS 3 for HD content good enough and 10 % gaming.

PC for DVD playback and 90 % gaming, 100 % music :)

What cables are you using to hook your PS3 up to your display?

As for PC vs. PS3, gaming is nothing more than personal preference. I can say that DRM's have greatly turned me away from PC gaming. As for music "playback", I think their about even. Unless you do tons of sound editing PC is probably the preferred choice, but I didn't get my PS3 for that purpose.

^That's the rumour, yes. SW emulation for the 40GB on the 2.50 FW update.
Just a rumour for now though ;)

Yup, was one hell of a fighnt getting one but man it was worth it. Lives up to the hype and then some!

I just can't stand that Little Big Planet uses the name of the one the greatest games ever made, Little Big Adventure. I keep getting them confused :)

Just to chime in on this. I picked up a 360 a month after launch, then last year i picked up a ps3.. I haven't touched my 360 since I got the ps3.

I picked up my PS3 in March of this year and I am lucky if I turn it on once a month. My 360 is turned on daily since launch.

Something's wrong here. I have both, and the PS3's DVD upscaling is significantly better than the 360's. I'm not even sure the 360 actually upscales any media beyond just stretching it - that's how big the difference is. The only time I prefer playing a DVD in the PC instead is when I want to watch it windowed.

Something is wrong there ^^^. Including myself, everyone I know that has both a 360 and a PS3 gets FAR BETTER DVD upscaling on their Xbox 360. Even AVS forums confirmed better upres on the 360 vs. the PS3 in DVDs. Sometimes, the DVD is actually worse in the upscale on the PS3 then the default resolution.

I rent Blu-ray disks for my PS3 anyway, so I can avoid that.

If anyone downloaded the LBP beta yesterday, they may be in for disappointment. I won't be buying that title any longer.

There's plenty of people that prefer the PS3 over the 360, and even over Oppo players.

I like the image the PS3 produces best. Therefore, I'll continue to use it. :)

the idea of lbp hasn't got the hype flowin in me yet... i'll definitely be giving it a try though, regardless of the disappointment a few posts back.

i had a go earlier and i didnt want to put the pad down! Its much much much more than i expected, I cant beleive theres so many user created levels already! I wasnt hyped at all untill about 2 hrs ago, now im stoked!

I already uninstalled it, as it pretty much blows chunks. It's nothing we haven't been doing on the PC for years. And could the loading times get ANY slower?

Did you play it online with others? If you did then fair enough but with a group with mics it is the best fun I've had in ages gaming, laughing pretty much all the way thru. FWIW the European beta is an old build, from Mediamolecule site:
"Also, since it’s a beta, it’s already quite an old build. We have some cool new stuff that’s been in our private test for a few days, I won’t give it all away but there are things cooking such as 5-star ratings, (much) better performance and less lagginess, better online stability, better UI for publishing, faster downloads…. so in a way playing this version is simultaneously exciting and an odd throwback to a couple of weeks ago."

Out of interest I wanna know what game on the PC is like that and has been out for years? Some FPS's do have level design functions but platformers are pretty non-existant on the PC, especially with this level of community.

Bottom line....if you like platformers your gonna love it, online it just gets better. 110% purchase.

I think if LBP was the second coming of Christ The Hedon would still say it sucks. He is pretty obvious about his allegiances. I haven't played the demo yet, so I can't say whether it sucks, but everyone that I have talked to that has played the demo has been gushing over it (other than Hedon of course). As an owner of both systems, fanboys of either drive me NUTS.

Side note: If the DVD playback on your 360 is better than your PS3, then your PS3 is broken. Every review and every post from from real media enthusiasts (not system fanboys; see AVS) will tell you that the PS3 is better for DVD playback. Add to that the fact the 360 sounds like a vacuum, and I can't imagine why you would use the 360 over the PS3 for dvd playback. The 360 has better games though, so it gets plenty of use in my house even though I don't use it for DVDs.

Only really applies to playing games (drive spin noise). The console enters a low noise mode when playing DVDs.

Unless you're talking about the original models which sounded like jet engines no matter what they were doing. :)

Yup. I even played many of the custom levels, and made a couple.

The_Law, are you claiming that as fact?

BTW, I have no allegiances. Nobody pays me to play my consoles, ROFL. You haven't played the demo yet, but you can criticize my opinion of it? Wow...let me guess, you must be the second coming of Christ?

Everyone I have spoke with said it was "ok" when they played (except for all of your friends..and of course you think it rocks without even playing it, so it must be good). Pathetic fanboys make me sick.

Wow...your 360 sounds like a Vacuum? I guess your 360 is broke. And if your PS3 is upscaling DVD's better than your 360, your 360 is broke. Every review and post I have read prefers the output of the 360.

Pathetic fanboys make me sick.

Self hatred needs seeing too ASAP ;)

In all seriousness tho really, you need to take a step back and see your obvious bias, for someone that *supposedly* owns both you seem to have wasted your money.....big time.

You can't be serious. Unlike you, I actually don't have allegiances. Go through my post history and then take a look at yours. EVERY one of your posts is PS3 sucks and 360 owns. If you notice at the end of my post, I actually PREFER the 360 for games. I just find the PS3 to be better for other media functions. That is not being a fanboy, that is being a reasonable person who can think beyond my love for a company that doesn't care about me in the slightest bit. You can believe whatever you want, but most people who don't have an MS tattoo on their ass believe that the PS3 does a better job as a DVD player. But by all means, continue believing otherwise.

I never said LBP was good. Reading is clearly a skill you have not yet mastered. As I said, I haven't played it. All I am saying is I wouldn't trust your opinion of any game on any system because you blood boils with fanboyism. Any game on 360 owns and any game on PS3 should be immediately deleted... right. It is really very funny. I will never understand people like you, but maybe it is better that way.

As far as my 360 being broken, you may be right. I am on my second (upgraded from a Pro to an Elite when they first came out), and it has been loud since I got it. But it works fine, so I am certainly not sending it off to MS and paying for a repair that is clearly not necessary.

Blu-Ray players have really gone down in price, and I don't see that stopping for a while.

Supposedly? Add me to your PSN list. TheHedon. And you can add me to your Xbox list, The Hedon.

We can talk one on one over our bluetooth headsets about "supposedly". Maybe whoop your butt in some MGO?

Your opinion is noted, though clearly WHACK.

While we're ranting a bit, some things about my ps3 (I have a 60 gigger)

I hate having to install demos once I download them. Why can't they just download and play like on the 360? Not a huge deal, but this IS a rant...

It's loud. Slightly quieter than my 360, which is louder than I expected. Reading other forums, I know this is an issue, and that if you bought 10 360s and 10 ps3s, 9 of the 10 ps3s would be quieter, but I got one of the unlucky ones.

The upscaling isn't great. The 360 upscaling looks like ass, but the ps3's isn't much better.

I hate the sixaxis. Too light. I need a dualshock.

Hardware BC is tits. I love playing whatever I want without worrying.

PSN has some nice organization features that xbl needs.

my son wanted ps3 and my daughter wanted 360 so I got both and the wii in the family room :)
kids are always in each others room no argueing ,:D

The_Hedon has quite an extensive trolling history on the PS3forums. Was banned twice, gee I wonder why.

hdmi of course since the ps 3 lacks vga output

as for sound the ps 3 is on par with the capabilities of your receiver. I have some Crystal DAC on my home theater speakers but get even better output through my elite pro. Guess they would be pretty equal if I fed uncompressed signals to my brothers 1500$ receiver though. Thing is most games are multi format and there is few except perhaps some wii titles that couldn´t be done better on the pc due to it´s better audio, visual, controller options and configurability :)

You just can´t get experience like the penumbra series using the falcon anywhere else.

Sure you can connect the wii remote through bluetooth so nintendo could in theory release super mario galaxy hd on the PC but will of course never happen lol. Other game genres where gamepad is the standard like fighting games of course you could as well get the console versions if you are not to picky with graphics.

But it´s really hard to play games with gamepads when you are used to alternate between falcon, joystick, keyboard mouse/gamepad etc depending on what work best with a specific game rather then a jack of all trade solution for all games :(

DRM is not really an issue for me with the climate today it´s a necessary evil. It´s even more strict on the consoles where you are forced using it in every title whereas you can actually choose what games to buy on the PC since they use different copy protection features some don´t even have any.. Of course some titles I have had to work a bit but playing more then 300 games on the PC none have stopped me from playing it because of DRM.

Consoles is more plug and play for good and bad though. You can´t enhance your game with mods etc from the community though and sometimes you get the feel that they actually charge for patches which they label DLC... That despite console games cost twice as much at times...

maintenance time I spend maybe 15 minutes every month or so installing drivers and about half a year I reformat my harddrive which takes 1-2 hours in total. Not that much time wasted really and you can do other things in the meanwhile.

But well who knows the wii and the 360 failed to make me a console gamer maybe the PS 3 will lol

Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Pixel Junk Monsters, Pixel Junk Eden, Gran Turismo 5p, DMC 4, Lost Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4 and one other that is slipping my mind right now.

Oh, and I am on the SOCOM beta.

LIES!!!!!
Lies? No lie. I was banned. They didn't like the fact that I didn't praise my PS3. Just like Xbox fanboys hate me for bashing the 360 because of my 4 Xbox 360 RROD replacements, and my constant bitching about Microsoft's take it up the tailpipe pricing on their accessories.
