id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

sorry if this has been asked before(which it probably has been), but where the hell are the benchmarks from all the other cards and systems. I don't have 2 gigs of RAM and an x800. I just want to know which midrange card I could get to play the game(sub $150).
There are none. You can judge from the benchmarks of the lowest cards (9800XT, 59XX) that you wont be reaching those fps with a slower card.

The first article was based on tests run at ID software with reps from Nvidia, ATI and Kyle there. More extensive testing on various systems is forthcoming, so just need to give it a little more time and an even larger picture should emerge. Besides the fact in approx 11 days we'll all know how it's going to run :D

Edit from the intro to the article-
Today we are sharing with you framerate data that was collected at the id Software offices in Mesquite, Texas. Both ATI and NVIDIA were present for the testing and brought their latest driver sets. While an extensive amount of data was taken, what we want to focus on is the high end video cards that are currently making their way to market. That means we will be showing you frames per second rates taken using the DOOM 3 timedemo "demo1" that will be included in your boxed copy of DOOM 3. The version of the game used to test is the same version you will be loading onto your own computer.

They did some benchmarks a little over a year ago with a wider range of cards, you can find the article here: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDc0LDE=.

some stupid new graphics card and which game runs 10 FPS faster on this and this card, how about you guys start spending some money elsewhere instead of buying the latest crap from the manufacturers for a marginal 1% performance increase in xxx games?

It's up to 20FPS difference between the 6800's or X800's? :)

If 10(20)FPS means nothing to you, then fine. :)
Others have different opinion's ;)
You think the 6800's and X800's will have an only 1% increase compared to last gen-cards?

Terra...

Geez! I bought a 9600Pro as a result of reading a PC gamer article on what cards would be good for HL2, assuming of course said card would also be good for D3.

But after reading the hardocp article, I feel pretty good that my current rig will run both D3 and HL2 reasonably well.

Thanks

Is it just me or has anyone else also not seen any other major hardware enthusiast site posting anything? Does this mean [H] is the only one Id thought worthy to do this or what? NICE.

It's getting annoying now.

"I have a X800XT PE"
"Sucks to be you."

"The GeForce 6800s will run faster than it by at least 10 FPS in Doom 3! Meheheheheh!"

What happens when Half Life 2 comes around? What if it's vice versa there? (Radeon getting the advantage.)

Well the thing we dont know about Doom 3 yet is what fps is playable. A 10-15 fps frame drop may cause those settings to be unplayable.

I think the fps is going to be alot higher in HL2 and a slight fps difference wont matter much.

If it's all about the experience, then the intelligent thing is to wait until the game is released before making any judgements or buying any hardware. Then see what the real life results are. There's a lot of guessing going on in those benches, from uber speced hardware to bench scripts not using all of the game modules. Reality could end up a bit different.

Imo it's pretty foolish to purchase anything in advance based on little or hypothesized information. Look how many Matrox users got burnt with the Millenium. Gotta say I chuckled a bit when all them people were lining up to pre-buy hardware nobody had seen yet. Or how about everybody who pre-bought 9800's to get a HL2 coupon - hope you didn't loose it yet. Especially them 9800 people whining about wanting a 6800 now.

[edit]

'specially if D3 ends up looking like a low poly game like the screenies in this thread. ("... but the lighting of those square looking guys is sooo aewsome with my 6800")

Remember like a year ago when tomshardware did a bencmark on the HL2 engine (at least that point in time). The ATI smoked all of the nvidia's and the ATI fans (myself included) we laughing at nvidia. Nvidia had a simple driver fix for the solution, ATI will have the same for Doom3. I was looking forward to HL2 more than anything, but i got tired of their bullshit release dates (doom3 was doing it too) but since doom3 has gone golden i'm all pumed about it instead. Any of the x800 or 6800 carfds, in my opinion will run both games great. Im getting x800 series mainly cuz my 9800waterblock fits it already and i dont have to purchase another block.

I dont believe any benchmarks until the official game is released, so for us to speculte on HL2 its really a moot point, one thing to look at though is what card is better under D3D now? That might give a glimpse at the performance but we gotta wait a little longer.

id never gave a release date until it went Gold. It was the different retail stores that were supplying the bogus dates.

Now Valve is a different story ;)

You figure John Carmack and OpenGL logos are on a lot of dartboards at the ATI offices right about now? Hopefully the opengl driver team isn't anywhere near the gpu team, or it could get ugly.

How does opengl run on ati's "professional" level cards? I could see a case for hamstringing performance on the consumer cards, just to preserve that high-end market. I've seen it in other industries, like cameras, etc.

Saying doom 3 is just one game is like saying the superbowl is just one game of football. It is true... and then it again, it isn't.

Both camps have great hardware, imho. I think ati will find a bit more performance in their opengl driver, but won't find enough to tie nvidia, much less beat them. On the d3d front, ati will probably maintain their very slight lead, almost entirely due to their significantly higher fillrate.

Wow, no way am I going to try and read all 39 pages. In my random sampling, I figure that the record for fastest growing thread has been set...as well as the thread with the most deleted posts that has yet to be closed as a reult.

On that note, I just upgraded to a refurb 9800Prom from a 9700np. I feel confident the game will run fine on it. As for my next card, it will be when PCI-Express is available on a 939 board and it will be the best OVERALL performing card...regardless of brand.

We still have 11 days until Doom3 ships, so I wonder how busy this forum will be once everyone gets the game in hand?

Probably not busy at all...everyone will be playing the game, not talking about it...or atleast that's what I'll be doing.

Those are not representative of the final game with the eyecandy turned up, like everyone else said, must be the xbox version. Everyscreen that I have seen to date, puts that one to shame, and PCGamer said that the graphics were breathtaking. There's nothing to bash about any of this. This is a simple equation of :

kickass game
+
kickass hardware
=
gaming heaven

Point was, know one knows much of anything right now. It's pure speculation. I'm not certain I would consider PCgamer the best source of information anyway. And the screenies I've seen A: who knows what settings/framerates and B: really aren't all that much more impressive than what Far Cry looks like on my system (that plays more than well enough with a 9800).

[edit]

For what it's worth, the consensus of the last several posts of that thread seem to be that those screens are the pc version. To be taken with salt, of course.

It's not a big surprise. Carmack said he was doing Doom 3 with low poly counts and cranking up the detail with passes/effects. That was a design decision made a long time ago and he obviously stuck with it.

It still looks very good and is supposed to have an awesome single player game. At E3, people were very happy with the MP. Don't like it? Oh well.

even if it is pc, you do know that you can turn the lod down to make it happen, we have seen shots that blow that one away so doesn't it make more sense to believe that the graphics in doom3 are top notch unless you have a video card that won't be able to do it, and that pic that you posted will be representative of those who don't have the hardware to see the game in it's glory?

And I disagree, you cannot compare farcry and doom3 farcry is a beautiful game, but it won't hold a candle to doom3. You will soon see. Even the beta leaked doom3 put farcry to shame.

I think Farcry looks just as good and better then Doom3. One problem that no one has discussed that D3 Engine has is the fact that its still based on BSP trees. Hence D3 Will never have large outdoor levels like farcry. Your always confined to a Box with BSP trees. This is why any quake 3 engine game feels confined with a funny looking sky.

let me remind you guys... we haven't played doom3 yet! :D

But I am sure that it will be amazing... can't wait! :D

Well you keep on playing Farcry, we'll play some HL2 and DOOM3!

I don't agree. I think you will be changing your mind after experiencing DOOM.

So what? Is having large outdoor environments some sort of right of passage for games? People have built plenty of wonderful games and mods without id's engines having complex terrain and flora systems over the years.

I don't think you can really compare the graphics of these two games directly.

Farcry looks amazing outdoors, but doom3 takes the cake indoors...and that's just a guess really, I have no idea if doom3 will do large outdoor stuff, but I doubt it given the plot of the game and all the talk about it being creepy and closed in.

It's really just a preference. If you are crazy about huge outdoor levels with tons of detail, Farcry is the shit. But that's not what doom3 is about. Doom3 is going to be something new and different. And I'm sure once I start playing it that the pretty palm trees in Farcry will be the last thing on my mind.

My thoughts exactly! How in the hell can someone bash the quake3 engine. COD is one of the best games in history!

Exactly! I know it will be more intense to be in a dark lit hallway when something jumps out at me, something about a zombie jumping out from behind a palm tree with an umbrella in it's drink just doesn't give me chills. lol

Did you guys know that Doom 3 will only have 4 player multiplayer?? Kinda sad if you think about it. Now I know that if this was any other game besides Doom 3 people would be bashing it because of its 4 player multiplayer.

Too bad people have to mod a game to have it's outdoor levels acceptable.

That has been known for a long time, JC wanted to focus as much as possible to bring the best Single player game to a market that is watered down with multiplayer games at the moment. Don't worry though, people will be making mods, and Quake4 is due out before christmas if I remember correctly and Quake4 is based on the doom3 engine, so we will get the best of both worlds!!

I do wish they make a coop mod for doom3 even if it is just 2 player!

quake3 is still one of the most popular games in the world, how can you say that with a serios face?

That's why Quake 4 is coming up. With |XCM| from Quake 3 coming to QCon this year, I'd say they'll take the cake in the Doom 3 matches, regardless of how many people can be squeezed in a game.

I've been abducted! I had goggles and the hat and they still got me!

Brighter side though, on "AS THE WORLD TURNS":

Brent and Kyle are now on Nvidia's payroll and have gotten fired by Ati. Tune in tomorrow as we catch Kyle and Brent sneaking out of a Matrox building with a bucket of chicken..

LOL if you ignorant morons believe that anything geforce is gonna beat the ATI card in real life get real. Geforce is just paying its way into your computer. Everything in that article is fabricated and a lie. Geforce paid them to say all those thing and you dont belong on these forums if you thing the 6800 ultra can even touch the plain x800 let alone the x800xt. They are paying for false advertisement just like back when they baught fake benchmarks a few years ago. Oh also along with getting off these forums......sence you believe all that bs i have a nice big piece of property I have to sell you on the moon. its only 3 million dollars for 2 million acres. Come on thats an awsome deal. Ill even through in one of those magic geforce cards you believe in.

I'm guessing you posted that just to get attention.

Uh that statement is false. Doom 3 comes with multiplayer modes. Just because it's multiplayer is not exactly the like the one you envisioned doesn't mean you should be spouting off statements like that.

Very entertaining thread (and I have read the whole thing  ), despite the amount of "Ford! Chevy! NVIDIA! ATI!" going on.

Several posters asked how timedemo framerates greater than 60fps were reported if the game itself is capped at 60fps.

If the D3 engine timedemo works like other Quake-engine timedemos (which I assume it does), the answer is simple:
  • A demo is made simply by recording frames as they are rendered.
  • If the game is capped at 60fps, and the demo is recorded for 60 seconds, it contains 60 x 60 = 3600 frames.
  • The timedemo command tells the game engine to render those 3600 frames and to report the time it took to render them.
  • The timedemo will render the frames of the demo as fast as the hardware will render them, regardless of the fps cap in the game.
  • If the time to render the 3600 frames is, e.g., 55 seconds, the game engine reports an average framerate of 3600/55 = 65.5fps.

Anyone who has watched a Quake III Arena timedemo (not just a demo playback) on fast hardware knows how comical it is to see the players zooming around at 5 times normal speed.

BTW, props to Kyle and crew for this great exclusive, and I really would like to see the numbers for the mid-range systems they have tested.
