id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

Good Point, I wonder what kind of benchmarks they would have gotten running on my machine at 233FSB with my ram running at 1:1 on my FX-53 lol, guess ill have to wait until the game comes out. How soon you think ATI is gonna try to spin the numbers in the benchmarks, maybe they got a magic set of drivers down in the cellar.

That's $300 manufacturers suggested retail price....the demand is driving the price up.

no 6800 NU's MSRP is $299...6800 GT is 399 and 6800 Ultra is 499 bro

Psh.. who cares about ither of them cards... SAVE YOUR MONEY!!.. i know you wanna play doom3 ASAP.. but im saving my money... PCI express SLI nvidia!!! remeber when voodoo2 came out... GOD! ill admit the TNT killed it but thats beccause NV knows what they are doing... now just take amazing SLI technology and put it with the VOODOO Killer...!

the TNT1 (thanks to its slower than anticipated 100MHz core) was only slightly faster than a single Voodoo2....SLI V2s blew it out of the water...TNT2 was faster though :)

I wanna know how it runs in multiplayer.

People are starting to get <$100 Gigabit switches (Dell, SMC, Netgear) with pings of <10 microseconds. I'm sure that even if the network code were a little bloaty, the first patch should consider expanding support for more players as better LANs should be able to take the punishment.

Wasn't the max number of MP players 4? Sounds a bit low to me, but this is an "ambience" and "strategy" FPS. Then again, if your comp is so busy running the AI and other funcitons, the NIC might get short shrift at times and cause lag....

MP mode was design around 4 players but there is scaleability for more than that provided the server can handle the job. they NEVER said ONLY 4 oplayers.. you think id is going to do that! hell when quake 3 came out who wasnt supprised.. yes we knew about all the player limits and such.. but really did you anticipate all the levels.. no they only said there where like 4 levels in the ads..

I wont be disapointed at all.. but even thust still your missing the point of doom3 its not intended to be multiplayer only thats why they made quake 3. focus more on why we all love doom THE KILLING OF BADDIES AND GOING TO HELL AND BACK! and enjoy the scenery this time around ;)

sorry yeah i ment TNT2 .. lets fase it SLI is top dawg.. its much more effficent than dual proc.

People are basing their hopes of ATI superiority in HL2 on what? Those old NV3x benchmarks?
Thats a logical decision.. 'cause we all know how great NV3x is/was..
/sarcasm

Come on people, the 6800 absolutely destroys the 5900/5950 in D3D benchmarks. Thinking it will perform even nearly as poorly as the 5900 did in HL2 is absurd.
The X800XT, 6800Pro and 6800GT will all probably be fairly close in HL2. Maybe even the X800Pro too, but I have a feeling its 12 pipelines will leave it back some.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned somewhere along the way, but people going to the end might need to be reminded.

I posted that a couple pages back, but it was deleted as "off topic"

Well if you want a video card based just on Doom 3 get the Nvidia card. If you want a card that runs all other games faster get the ATI card.

I think that by now most of you know that I am a voice of reason here and that while I currently run a GT , I have been an ATI user for some time. These facts are irreleavant to the conversation except that no one can accuse me of being a fanboy for either side.

My perception of reality is this. The facts are undeniable that the 6800 series performs as well if not better in Direct 3d games than the ATI cards depending on what settings and how you want to skew the benchies. The 6800 series is the better Open GL card.

It would seem that the 6800 series would be the smart choice since you can get near XTPE performance in most games with an easily overclocked GT for 100 dollars less as well as the best possible Open Gl performance in not only Doom 3 but the numerous games to follow that will be based on that engine.

Rgarding HF2 , I suspect that the 6800 series will surprise us all in this game given the timetable and the inevitable evolution of the 6800 series driver set. The potential of the nvidia driver far exvcedes that of the what ATI owners cann lookfoward to in all honesty.

Therefore the choice to me is obvious. You go with what common sense would dictate and as far as I am concerned common sense dictates that if you are investing over 350 US dollars into a video card, then the 6800 GT is far and away the best choice of 2004; period.

PS .I spent the last 4 hours gaming .does anyone else game anymore or is it all about buying the card then argueing about it?

AMEN!

Who ever said the GT only kicks ass in dOOm3? it kicks ass all around...nuff said. I too am waiting to see what i think is going to happend, and that is to watch the 6800 series own in Hl2 also, beating ATI in there own game...

I still think is funny all those peopley that got suckered into buying a XT card for free HL2, i had my suspiction we would see another card line before HL2 an Doom came out....

ive beatin all my games :( need one of these top dog cards to play farcry, painkiller, or theif3

Dyslexic, I still want a 6800U but just because Doom 3 beats the X800XT-PE by a couple of FPS dont mean that much to me and getting a XT fpr $449 is cheap. If you could have a 6800GT for $399 or a x800XT-PE for $449 what would you buy?

I would buy the XT PE, sell it on eBay, then buy the GT with profits (AND pocket a couple of hundred bucks).

Folks don't forget we're only seeing nVidia tearing up ATI on this one single game on this first benchmark with the provided beta drivers at default settings. I will be more trusting when I see these test done in the hands of Kyle and Steve and their real world test.

These tests WERE more or less performed at the hands of Kyle and Steve -- just in iD's offices.

I will say again what I and a few other people have said."NVIDIA has told us more than once that the 6800 series was “designed to play DOOM 3,” and the truth of that statement is now glaringly obvious'' Nvidia beat ATI in a game that Nvidia cards were designed to play well on, that statement was concluded from the quote above written by Kyle in case some people have problem with reading what other people say as that also becomes "glaringly obvious". What happened here was Nvidia gambled on designing their hardware for Doom 3 and the won big-time. Most Nvidiots think that ATI wont be able to do any better in Doom 3 or gain any performance in OpenGL. But driver fixes have helped both companies before i.e. Far Cry and Nvidia. I think people should just enjoy the hardware they have and enjoy Doom3 to the fullest when it comes out, not argue over stupid arguments over and over and over again!

Quit trying to justify why your ATI cards got owned. Its OVER, case closed. Guess you should of spent that $500 on some shit in a box cause thats what you got.

Yeah, because I have to play Doom3 at a little lower settings I should just throw my card in the trash, nevermind all the other games I have play great with it.By the way,how old are you?

Today at about 3:30pm, a crowd started gathering in the middle of town. Thousands and thousands of angry x800 customers stormed the local CompUSA, killed all of the staff and burnt the building down.

"I guess they were upset about the latest id benchmarks", said one former patron.

But the reality was that there were no 6800 GT boards in stock, at least that's what one CompUSA employee (who was on break) told us.

"I hear that when the store gets rebuilt they are going to use the obsolete supply of x800 boards to help build the aggregate flooring. They say it will help offset the cost of the new building even though it's a loss on the books.", said one observer.

"I've already started using my x800 as a skateboard", said one of the disgrunted mob. "I put mine into my mom's computer as a joke!", quipped another. This raises a serious issues. As gamers become more sensitive to their true needs for graphic and computing power, there could be extreme shortages which might cause more unrest.

Well, if me and my friend have our plans set, as i mentioned on ocforums a day or so back, i can get myself an ultra and an x800xtpe :D

Yeah, but UT2004 is Nvidias "way its meant to be played" too, and yet it runs better on ATi. So its not always true that the platform its designed on does the best in reality.

Couple of differences...

1)D3 was HIGHLY anticapated,2)The 6800 was designed to take advantage of some components of the game, which turned out to be a very smart move.

I personally am going to wait until Black Friday(day after thanksgiving) to purchase a card. I have a 9700 pro that will play it just fine(sure I wont have all the eye candy but i dont care, and I sure as hell dont play at 1600x1200, so those benchmarks are worthless to me personally). Not to mention that between now and turkey day we will see a steady stream of benchmarks and optimizing for the game as well as a slew of driver releases/patches/fixes. And the best point of waiting........................ Holiday sale = $$$ saved on a new card to purchase more next-gen games utilizing this great gaming engine and others alike. Game On.

UT2003 runs better on ATI cards as well. Just because its a game marketed with an nVidia logo doesn't make it run better on nVidia hardware. nVidia has more money then ATI. nVidia has more market share then ATI. And nVidia does more marketing then ATI.

nVidia was just named like the fourth fastest growing technology company in the world.

LOL, that's not a manufacturer bundle, it's one of ebgame's rebate bundles. Still a nice deal since ebgames is pretty fast in paying rebates.

Yea but why bundle a game thats on nVidia's site and runs best on nVidia hardware with a 9600XT and X800Pro? lol

Well I have been convinced...I was leaning more to ATi early on but now I'm going to get a BFG 6800 GT. That seems to be the best card for the cash money.

I don't know if anyone has said this, I didn't feel like going through 40pages :p . Correct me if I'm wrong...ID is backed by Nvidia correct? And HL2 will be backed by ATI? I'm just wondering how the HL2 benchies will look. Either way, congrats to Nvidia on thier success. Though I think my 9800 will last me till the next badass lines. Though to imagine something putting out the same performance jump as the 9800XT against the x800XT will just be insane. Time to start saving :)

Geez, people just need to shut the hell up. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. Whats the point of saying "HA I have awesome hardware in this game only to find out that tomorrow it sucks in another one and then you find out that your favorite company wins in another one and you get to rub it in peoples faces and then all of the sudden a patch is released that makes your card perform slower so you shell out $500 and now are 10fps faster and are automatically elevated to God status but then a new game is released, blah, blah, blah." Yes that was a run-on sentence, get the point? Video cards can in no way influence the size of your weener so quit acting like it. I have an FX5600 and its a great card. Go ahead tell me how much it sucks and how much my D3 experience will suck. I REALLY need to hear it from you. WE ALL DO. WE MUST. My life wont be complete until someone on this forum that knows nothing about me or my expectations for quality in a game makes me suck it down. Need I remind you that the masters of gaming (Kyle and John) have repeatedly said that the experience is whats important, more so then the FPS shown in the graphs.

Damn, it's been a while since I've seen so much participation in a single thread on this forum! Anyway, at the very least it seems that there have been some importanat lessons learned by both camps by the D3 numbers.

1. Drivers, drivers, drivers. ATI's laziness with the OpenGL drivers has given them exactly what they deserve. Looks like there are going to be some late nights for the folks in Canada for a while.

2. nVidia has finally slapped the monkey off of it's back called the GeForceFX. Even though nVidia is the ONLY choice for Linux gamers, for a while there it seemed like the Linux community was stuck with inferior hardware (or shitty ATI drivers). At least this time around we didn't have to listen to the "Are you ready?" marketing B.S.. Kudos to nVidia for getting it right. :)

Right on dude! I've got a ATi 9700 Pro and it's still brilliant in any of the newer games I play, heck, I don't need more FPS, for what? Every application I run works great, and instead of ranting about some stupid new graphics card and which game runs 10 FPS faster on this and this card, how about you guys start spending some money elsewhere instead of buying the latest crap from the manufacturers for a marginal 1% performance increase in xxx games? I think people in this forum have too much money or haven't been paying attention how the manufacturers are taking them for a ride. lol

Holy crap, the end. I finally made it to the end.

After reading all the posts, it seems that the best thing to say is that doom 3 will look amazing on any of the current video cards. The other games will look good on any of the video cards. Who knows what HL2 will bring to the table if/when it is released. We might as well be talking about which video card would be better Duke Nukem. Or Doom 1. This ATI vs nVidia is pointless.

I would imagine that by the time we've all played through the single player a couple times and are tired of the 4 player MP, we'll see an expansion or patch or mod that will give as great a MP experiance as the SP.

It's getting annoying now.

"I have a X800XT PE"
"Sucks to be you."
"?"
"The GeForce 6800s will run faster than it by at least 10 FPS in Doom 3! Meheheheheh!"

What happens when Half Life 2 comes around? What if it's vice versa there? (Radeon getting the advantage.)

Kyle, have you renamed "doom3.exe" to "duum3.exe" just to be sure you're getting kosher numbers? :D

Aside form all this talk, Did Kyle and Steve really get to go to "ID" and test it? How cool is that....newest game, newest hardware......AT ID office!! no wonder they never complain about witch card preformes better, they probley jsut swap card depending on what game they play lol

sorry if this has been asked before(which it probably has been), but where the hell are the benchmarks from all the other cards and systems. I don't have 2 gigs of RAM and an x800. I just want to know which midrange card I could get to play the game(sub $150).
