id Software's Official DOOM3 Benchmarks

Hey Kyle where did the 6800 plain fall roughly without having to dig back through your data ? can't wait to see how my Leadtek 6800 will do
The feeling it left me with was that it did as good and sometimes better than the ATI X800Pro.

Looks good so far. Are you going to be comparing image quality from the lower end/older generation cards to the newer models, or at least have screen shots so we can do the comparison ourselves. Just curious since I'm running a Ti4200 which I plan to do an upgrade on in the next couple months, but i would like to get an idea of what it would look like compared to the other cards, so I can decide whether or not to hold out on playing the game until I get the new system, so that I can have the best single player experience.
We will have a section on IQ for sure. id has taken a very simple approach in their IQ and one of the things that we saw that was to truly experience DOOM 3 with the way it was supposed to be seen you need to leave all of the eyecandy on. So all of our benchmarks, with the exception of one set, have ALL the eye candy on (specular lighting, bump/normal maps, special effects here and there). The big IQ players are resolution and texture quality hands down.

Guys do you really think if there was a huge discrepency between a p4 and a amd64 that they wouldnt have been a little more reserved about the initial article?

Wasnt the original quake3 one of those games that liked p4's almost as much as amd?

So there is the possibility that that doom might run just as good on p4's.

Yes I'm interested to see if AMD or Intel is liking this game better

The AMD seems to be a bit better peformer, but you would be hard pressed to ever see a big difference in performance, or at least I think so. I left id software this morning thinking that CPU brand was going to have little impact on playing DOOM 3.

Hey Kyle hasn't this thread set some sort of record for the most number of views, ever?

I'm quite surprised that the engine doesn't seem to be multi-threaded. The plans for dual core chips have been around for a while, and a fair number of people are running dual processor rigs. (Including me) Seems to be a way of "future-proofing" the engine. It would make it easier to take advantage of hyperthreading on the Intel side of the house too. Dual Opteron 244's should be able to handle this though.

I wanted to add this also about the Guide this week.

The format of this will not be as traditional benchmarks that you guys are used to. This will the DOOM 3 [H]ardware Guide. We will be concentrating on best performance out of each setup and what to expect from overall system performance. Currently we will not be graphing more than one video card on any graph. It will not be a comparison. That said, we will certainly show you what was the highest playable IQ that each system would provide and we did this using REAL gameplay that covered half a level and runs about 5 minutes. We worked with id on picking the "right place" to do the run-through. That said, we did test on other levels to make sure our IQ calls were "right" and delivered playable performance. If anything, we tried to be on the conservative side of things and certainly some will find some better IQ settings that are playable for them.
Sorry, no time for laptops. :( Maybe next time. But as of right now, it seems getting the latest drivers might be an issue from your MFG.
Sound was something that was to be done as well but we simply ran out of time. We will have comments from id on the importance of sound. TO put it simply, the game plays great with headphones, but if you have been looking for an excuse to buy 5.1 for your computer, NOW is the time.

The audio does run in a separate thread. Robert Duffy says that on page 79 of the September PC Gamer. Q3A SMP support never worked out well anyways.

Hmmm... Maybe *Now* is the time to remedy that. Most high end machines will be dual processor in the next couple of years. (or Quad! )

That's what I was thinking of as I typed that. Both AMD and Intel are moving to dual core desktop CPU designs in less than 2 years. That is still quite a while.

Two years, really isn't that long. Considering how long it takes to code a game engine.... Be kind of cool if something like what was used to code the battle scenes in Lord of the Rings crept into game engines ;-)

All I have to say is that when this guy comes running at me at 1600x1200, I'm gonna need a bedpan or a big fuckin diaper.

/me wonders what the next 8 years will bring other than higher polycounts / displacement mapping / larger textures.

Probably end up with some vertex shaders that interact with the world more, (cloth w/ wind, jiggly fat, water)

Thinner wallets.

one can dream ;)

This is alittle off topic, but how many of you think when doom 3 is released it will be hard to get a copy,or do you think stores will have them in stock?Im debating on preordering a copy, but i really should wait for my bills to show up in mail before i spend my dsl payment.

I'm guessing ID Software and Activision know full well there will be a large initial demand for the game and will print and ship plenty of copies. The only question is how long after release it will be before all of those copies show up in the store. I went ahead and preordered a copy in the hopes that maybe the preorder might make it into my hands a day or two before full store stock. But we'll see.

getting a real advantage out of smp/smt isn't *easy*. pretty much a waste of time when it comes to games, if you really start to think about it.

now, if the doom3 client ran on aix or solaris, lol, it might be a different story.

I disagree with you saying that most machines will be multiprocessor in a couple years too... they won't be multiprocessor, they MAY be multicore processors, though. There is a difference.

But not to the software. Two cores will appear to the system (doesn't matter if they are Opteron, em64t, Sparc, Power5, or whatever) as two seperate and distinct CPUs. Unlike a SMT chip (P4), which only has multiple execution units, the true dual core cpu only shares the memory and IO busses. And besides, Windows and Linux actually can use dual core cpu's as true dual processors. Games certainly can make use of multi-processors, Independent AI, sound, rendering, whatever. You just have to design an app to take advantage. There hasn't been a real need up until now, but with these new processors coming out next year, there will be widespread dual processor and quads available.

I just installed my eVGA 6800GT and played some games FarCry and BattleField V and it is awsome! I cant wait for DOOM3 now. :D

OMG, Dyslexic bought a 6800GT!!!

Are there even any ATI users left on HardOCP now? hehe j\k :p

clicky1

performance drops in ut series 25%-50% af optimizations off. Even nV's cards don't have that much of a drop with af opts off, guess ATi optimized more?

Yea, thats one of the links i was looking for. Does anyone have any more?

A 6800 would kick the living crap out of an X800 if you disabled Tri and AF ops on both. Especially since AF ops is OFF by default on the 6800's now and they lose very little performance from it. nVidia doesn't need to optimize a ton on their new cards. Their still very powerful with all the optimizations off.

The whole [H] seems to be changing or in disarray. I even saw you make a post *complimenting* the [H]'s job on their Doom 3 benchmarks, I mean really, what is going on?:p lol, j/k

I dont have a problem with Hards way of reviewing. I just dont think in-game FRAPS testing is the end all to benchmarking because the results are so variable. And sometimes i disagree with what they find playable and the settings they choose to use. But HardOCP is still one of my favorite review sites and has the best hardware forum online.

I would like to see some more nVidia orientated stickies for a change though lol. I'm getting sick of all the ATI Catalyst and ATI review stickies :p.

Haha I know I'm just joking, but hey take a break now, the results are in your favor.:p

I believe it. I envy you guys who get/got to play it, on various and powerful systems, let alone play it at id's office, let alone talk to Carmack... I'll have to take my jealousy out on imps, cherubs, demons, and what not when I finally get my own copy of the game.:D

This is probably a long shot, but can you post the default doom3 cfg so I can get my stuff ready =)

The response is by Chris Hook, a PR manager at ati. So I really dont think he even knows how the card works. =)

Sorry if this has been posted, but here is ati's response

OMG rofl, their still going on about that damn partial precision crap. Does ATI just not know anything at all about FP16 and FP32? They obviously dont realize there is NOTHING wrong with using FP16 when you dont need FP32. They just keep using that because their pissed that nVidia's FP16 is faster then their FP24 so they try and make people think their X800's are doing something special like "full precision ALL the time" lol.

And the X800Pro got its ass owned in DOOM3. I dont care what ATI thinks about it lol.

Its funny how they didn't mention anything about the "fudging" that was found in the DOOM3 testing on the ATI cards filtering :). They probably still tell people they are doing Full Trilinear filtering even though review sites like Tomshardware and Tech Report gave them a good butt raping over it a couple of months back.

I think we should all be happy about ATI showing bad performance in Doom 3. I mean after all this will just make ATI do better (hopefully)in their drivers and their next-generation cards. And who knos they might "pull a rabbit out of the hat" with their new drivers, we can only hope!

Partial precision on the same rendering path in OpenGL???

I think ATI needs to lay off the crack.
