    Old story, embarrassing

formatted the wrong disk, installed an OS on it

I have heard tales of powerful and mysterious programs that recognize files that are no longer indexed on a volume, can somebody steer me in the right direction?

"formatted the wrong disk, installed an OS on it"

Any recovery software will only be able to recover the files that were NOT already overwritten with new data.

I've had good luck with EaseUs Data Recovery.

Add a few opiates (dilaudid, morphine, oxycodone or methadone) and you won't care about it......least it's always worked for me :D

After a format and reinstall you have zero chance of any recovery.

    Sorry.

I have used Recuva but yea since you have overwritten some of the files already, likely too late.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec is what I've had luck with the one time I was in your situation with a client's computer. As to what you'll be able to save after installing an OS over it, that's entirely dependent on your luck.

Rule: When doing OS/formatting tasks, I physically unplug all other drives from my system to ensure this doesn't happen. And plus, you had a backup of your data anyways right? :)
