I love Linux

hahaha

Damn you are so predictable. I just lost a 5 dollar bet. I said you would wait for 7 or 8 hours till you assumed I was in bed for the VR post. I loose.

When it comes to predictable, you're the one saying how Windows does nothing well when you've not even attempted using VR on Linux. I have. So there's that. Really, if you're going to blast me setup a Linux VR rig. You won't and that's fine but the absolutes you guys go on about are silly.

edit: just noting that it is not my picture, and I haven't tried it.

Amazing how easy Linux folks get away with something they never have tried and never will. Hell I actually try something under Linux and get blasted to hell and back.

OK Heatle you win.

I'll actually bite on your VR troll.

Yes Windows is the best PC platform for VR. Not that I care... but yes let me repeat Windows is the best PC platform for VR.

There now that the 0.5% of PC users that have a VR headset know that the world is right. ChadD has a greed with Heatle Windows is fantastic for VR. LMAO

Why would I buy Photoshop when I don't have a need for it?

Because your full of beans and everyone that uses the stuff you claim to have tried all the time knows it.

WHY are you even bothering to "Try" things under Linux when your hate for Linux is so obvious.

If I hated sea food I wouldn't go to a different sea food place every night so I could tell the chef how crap their food is.

Everyone gets it Linux isn't for you... STOP. You don't have to run Linux. Hell you can even still come around the linux threads and tell us how much you hate Linux. You don't have to lie about having experience with it.

No one ever asked you to care about something you don't care about. You're the one making ridiculous generalizations about things even you admit you don't care about and haven't even touched.

Why would I hate Linux when you're saying that Windows does nothing well and costs money when Linux is free? You don't seem to hear what you say.

Photoshop?

Not so much... but Lightroom?

http://rawtherapee.com/

http://www.darktable.org/

I prefer rawtherapee myself. Its fully open source and the development team do a great job adding requested features and being all around awsome. Software has come a long way in the last year. I can't think of anything I light room offers that rawt can't do for free... and if it doesn't do something if you ask it will.

Photoshop?

I don't think I have a need for that either. I mean, I've seen the recommendations and acknowledge that it's what most photogs would recommend using. However, with how little photos I take, I doubt I'd get close to justifying the monthly cost. Like watching a movie on Netflix every other month, but keeping the sub going.

Maybe the conversation became too directed at me personally.. :p

When did I say I didn't touch things... are we talking about BS VR again. I have tried VR it made me PUKE fuck that they can keep it. (and yes it was running under windows on a 1080.) VR is crap and will die because they haven't addressed the basic issues with the tech. But by all means enjoy your VR while its still around.

If your talking about windows... yes like everyone else that has anything to do with computers I have to deal with Windows. Its out there people use it, its in offices when I go to switch them... its running workstations for specific software pieces as you suggest. EVER SINGLE damn time I have to deal with that piece of crap OS it drives me insane. Stops that should take me 20 min take 4 hours cause I have to let clients machines complete updates and do other inane things that seem to be designed to do nothing but waste my time. Sure there are ways to reduce a bunch of that crap... but in my line of work yes sometimes I can't help but having to help take care of some stupid Windows machine. Yes I am calling them stupid. Windows is in my mind without a doubt the WORST OS ever created. Their lack of a proper inode system means Updates that should take minutes take hours... their lack or proper security means I have to waste a ton of time securing and cleaning machines that if they where running a proper OS I wouldn't have to do. I am not talking about specific bits of third party software... I am talking about the nuts and bolts OS itself which is complete and utter garbage.

Nah, no worries. LR is fantastic if you have a high volume of photos- it's a pared-down version of PS with the best management tool you can get, great for higher volume workflows.

And with respect to Adobe on Linux- it's freakin' Adobe. It doesn't run great on Windows!

[or Mac...]

You preach about how Windows does nothing well and the moment that someone mentions things that it does do well like VR they must be a Microsoft employee. Now that's BS.

You're the most biased for windows poster I've seen on the forums and I'm 99,9% sure you work for Microsoft. Nobody loves Microsoft unless it's paying their daily bread.

Thunderbolt used to be exclusive for Apple and even today it's very rare.

It's an Intel technology- it isn't everywhere, and it certainly isn't needed everywhere, and it's certainly available. Not even sure why it would be brought up.

It's brought up when discussing iMacs and their apparent lack of upgradability in rendering mode. With Tbolt they can be expanded quite easily.

Not if you don't connect them to the network.

thank-you-capt-obvious.jpg

Yes, I knew I was being obvious but I had to say it. :)

I've got multiple 'smart' TVs and none of them are connected to my network (I don't trust the manufacturer). Each of the TV's are connected to a computer that acts as a remote client for my SageTV server. Allows the wifey to watch any of her recorded shows on any TV in the house.

Lets get one thing straight - Windows 10 is not a bad OS. Its not even an ok OS, its actually pretty damn great. Everyone absolutely loves to hate MS because its the cool 'geek' thing to do. Windows 10 runs better than previous versions while having a ton more features, has lower hw requirements and supports every single device you can possibly find. It has excellent battery life, better than any Linux and beaten only by OSX, and Windows invented most of the UI paradigms copied by everyone else. A single codebase runs on every form factor which by itself is amazing. It has tons of advanced features and is on the cutting edge.

The issues with Win10 are mostly around decisions made by some team (like the Search team), the uncertainty about Start menu between 7-10. The constant whining about 'phone home' is ridiculous.

None of this of course means that Linux itself isn't an excellent OS, or rather kernel+base. There are many great distros, tons of work put in by the OSS community.

There is a place for both and no need for the constant flamewars. And today you can use your Linux cmdfu in Windows as well :)

The question is why would you want to? Why pay for an OS you don't even like? Why expose yourself to literally 99,9% of all the worlds attacks and exploits? Why take away your control of the computer and release it to Microsoft? Why subject yourself to random updates, cutting you away from your computer just when you need it the most?

A lot of why:s.

Such a good TV series, I actually felt quite sad when it finished!

For the record, I use GIMP for all my image manipulation duties and as a non fully professional it does everything I need and more. I also think thunderbolt is awesome, one of the best things relating to the OSX platform is the ability to run one Mac in Target Disk Mode while accessing the files on another Mac like an external HDD's plugged into it - An absolute lifesaver at times.

Darktable is the one I'd look at for the library management features- I need to try all of these out and see if I can get a relatively efficient workflow down.

Also need to try monitor calibration...

Has anyone here tried to go with VFIO for Linux? I've been pondering it for quite a while since I have a spare 750 Ti that could be the host GPU while allowing my 980 Ti to work for Win10.

You bought hardware/software that's supported or better supported on Windows. To do what you want, you should probably use Windows.
<psssst: he does. He's an M$ shill paid to troll Linux discussion threads trying to drum up Surface business. He probably does the same in the Apple user forums.>

IMHO, of course! (/t)

To be honest, they're really not too far off in a lot of cases if you're buying an equivalent device. (ex. comparing AIO to AIO as opposed to an AIO against a tower)
Example:
$2k iMac
3.5Ghz 7th gen i7
8GB ram
1TB Fusion drive
Radeon Pro 575 / 4GB ram
27" 5k 5120 x 2800 Display
All-in-one form factor

$1950 Dell 7450 AIO
7th gen i7 7600
8GB ram
1TB spinny disk + M.2 Optane 16GB
Radeon R7 M465X / 2GB ram
23" 4k + touch panel
All-in-one form factor

$1550 Dell XPS 7760 (v1)
7th gen i5-7400
8GB ram
1TB spinny + 32GB M.2 SATA SSD Cache
Intel HD Graphics
27" 4k Non-touch

The XPS line really sucks on customization.. However, on both you're deficient on screen resolution and video card.
Raising the price point and evening specs-

$2950 XPS 7760
7th Gen i7-7700
16GB Ram
512 GB PCIe SSD
AMD RX570 8GB
27" 4K + touch

$2700 iMac
4.2Ghz i7
16GB Ram
512GB SSD
Radeon Pro 580 8GB
27" 5k 5120 x 2800 display

Higher resolution monitor w/ better graphics.

So overall, I would say they're fairly priced. Admittedly I did not do this exercise across their entire product line. I wouldn't be surprised if some aging designs like the MB Air start to look a little funny.
Every windows fanboi on the planet like to point at the Mac's "closed" ecosystem & try to poke holes in them, whether it be hardware or software. However, if they're like me, I stopped trying to play "tech support" for family and friends with M$ products, because they (and MS) invariably fubared their systems, usually with virii and drive-bys.

So, now every time they ask me "what should I get?" I say "buy a Mac. It may cost a bit more up front, but in the long run it will last ALOT longer than the Wintel-based obsolescence machines. And that philosophy has borne out: my son's got a Mac AIO desktop and a MacBook that run flawlessly while the AMD Win7 machine (octocore IIRC, 16g RAM, 512g ssd, 2TB HD, decent AMD vicard) I built them to run their embroidery machine keep taking a dump on them, partly because the embroidery machine's software is shit, and because every time my daughter-in-law goes looking for patterns, she somehow manages to get virus'd, despite the plethora of anti-virus and such programs we have on the machine. Lately, they've stopped doing the embroidery work because the manufacturer refuses to fix the software problems, so they're now doing t-shirts with a dedicated thermal transfer printer attached to the Mac, whose software works--you guessed it--flawlessly.

Others who've gotten Mac devices are still running them, 10 years down the line, with zero problems.

And then there's the OS: based on BSD, a flavor of Linux. Gee, who'd've thunk it that a version of Linux is solid and dead-reliable?? ;)

There is a legit conversation about specific software packages and lack or proper Linux versions. Didn't mean to say you where attacking Linux yourself. There is however a number of specific software packages that induce very pavlovian responses from some Linux detractors in these parts. (no matter how much some of them claim to always be attempting to "install" Linux so they can love it) Photoshop is one of those... and I agree I would love to see Adobe support it and it boggles my mind that they don't as I have been in multi million dollar VFX shops helping them with Linuxy stuff and see that they are forced to run windows or mac workstations often for no other reason. (all their real expensive software is 100% Linux first).

Support is getting better... in Adobes case it seems like they are more jazzed about moving everyone toward their cloud offerings then taking care of their larger clients. Its why as Heatle pointed out I talked about Affinity for awhile. I do have clients that jumped on that for their macs, as much as they love Photoshop Adobe also drives them insane.
Wasn't Photoshop originally a Mac-only go-to program??

I've always said that Windows is a giant virus disguised as an OS...

It was, and in many ways still is. A lot of pro users / shops still run a lot of macs. Photoshop still runs really nicely on a mac its just not exclusive anymore. So some windows boosters will say see see anything good ends up on windows so why run anything else. ;)

At one time the Mac platformed dominated the photo/print industry. I would say it still mostly does. Other software like Quark was mac only for years as well... and superior on the mac for long after they released a windows version. Pro users didn't mess around and just ran macs. To this day if you can find a legit pro (not working out of their basement on Logos) Graphic Designer that hasn't used a mac more then a PC in their lifetime I would be shocked.

See, I 'member the days of print shops, Pantone colors, and Macs in said shops (I serviced copiers & wide-format inkjet printers in those days). I also remember Macs in lawyer offices, because their native networking was far superior to anything MS ever had (and still is).

Heatle is heatle. Kyle gave us both a few day cool off... I hadn't had my coffee that night. Lets not get heatle going again, Kyle has had a busy enough week. lmao
Yer probably right, he trolled a few threads I was in a couple weeks ago, before I went AWOL trying to install my lovely new Micron 2tb SSD under Win7... snap, is there a theme here??
