I bought RAGE...and...

Wingsticks are pretty expensive, though. My weapon of choice was the standard settler pistol with Fatboys. It's a cheap-enough ammo and does tons of damage.

$$ was never an issue for me...do a lot of side missions, loot bodies, play the mini-games (Five Finger Fillet, Strum, card game, the one with the dice where you kill the advancing mutants etc) and compete in those tournament races

Good game but wholly unremarkable. It's cheap now so even I don't have any problems recommending anymore. IMO though, I still feel like Borderlands did some of "this" a lot better.

I'm eager to see how the id tech 5 engine gets used down the road.

Rage did a lot well, unfortunately it also had a lot wrong with it. These days not a lot of leeway is given to developers, as it should be. Great weapons, fun gameplay, riddled with bugs that overall ruined my experience.

Aaaaaaaannnnddddd ITS BACK !

yep seemed like it could be a some what decent game but id botched the launch so bad that it destroyed the games reputation, along with a decent portion of id's.

I would have liked to finish the game, but I got bored about 2 hours into it. and got sidetracked with other games that I wanted to play. Maybe I'll get back to it eventually.

I enjoyed the game, somewhat, and it is definitely not as bad as some particularly vocal posters, on these forums, would have you believe. It's almost as if RAGE must have killed their dog or something.

Haha, seems that way. The texture popping was just awful, not sure if they have fixed that issue yet. May be worth a second look.

Gamers are binary in their opinions that's for sure, and its in vogue to hate.

I started out enjoying it, eventually things started to feel very... monotone. There's not much driving the game forward, and it lack a soul or identity. Lately I've been wanting to join the mutants so I can start killing humans... they deserve to die IMO, those lazy bums...

The game was incredibly average. The guns were the same as every other shooter, the racing was so-so, and the atmosphere was nothing new. It was also short and home to one of the most abrupt endings of all time. I liked their idea to base a game around higher FPS, but the weird pop-in effect defeated the purpose. I do think they eventually fixed most of the issues with patches, though.
RAGE was victimized by a lack of timeframes. You can only pull off “when it’s done” when you’re a top 5 developer. Id was long past those days.
Borderlands swooped in and bested their game in every way with 1/8 of the development time. I think that Borderlands literally beat Rage in every single aspect except maybe the racing…and that’s debatable.

This thread just won't die!

I still have it installed and on my backlog to play. Maybe I'll try to get through it next...finally finished Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider recently.

So I've been giving this game a shot, and I dunno if I can even finish it.

First off, the game is so incredibly linear...you think it's an open-world, but really anywhere you go with actual enemies is just the most linear corridor bullshit ever.

Second, the checkpoint system is total nonsense. I went to do a mission where you have to blow up three caches. I destroyed them all, and then on the way out I accidentally fell down a hole and died. I selected "Load From Checkpoint", thinking that after the last one blew the game should have saved...NOPE. It put me back AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ENTIRE MISSION. A mission which took something like 30-45 min to finish...all of that time, fucking wasted.

Fuck this game. I now know why it got the reviews it did, and it's not just because of the shitty texture popping (which to this day is still a major problem).

I didn't think this game was as bad as some people say. The ending was disappointing (the Scorchers DLC kind of makes up for it if you play that last), the actual levels were kind of linear, the racing was mediocre, but the weapons had a good feel to them and the shooting was satisfying. id just knows how to make an FPS.

As for the checkpoint system, this game has quicksave and quickload, as well as manual saving (at least the PC version does). I put a good 26 hours into the game beating all the side quests and DLC before beating this game, so I didn't find it short.

I waited till it was on sale and had most of the bugs worked out. It was a decent game all around, just not a great one, and certainly not what I had expected from ID. The signs were all there, and I should have expected a console tech demo, but it was ID, and I had inflated expectations.
IMHO, if this game had been released by a less well know developer, without as much hype. People would have considered it an OK, but not great game, and there would have been less hate.

True, and I did not quicksave so it was partially my fault, but don't advertise a checkpoint system where the checkpoints only save at the start of a mission and not after you have completed all mission objectives. That is just extremely poor execution.

Moreso than that, though, I just don't really feel entertained by the game that much. You mention the gunplay feeling good...I have to partially disagree, as the gun firing sounds feel alright and "powerful" enough for the most part, but when you actually hit enemies it doesn't really feel that satisfying. It's got that "enemies have hitpoints and it doesn't really matter much where you shoot them" kind of system, so you can be pelting them in the face with bullets and they just kind of get knocked back (or worse, you see a blood spray but no effect on the enemy at all). Any game where a headshot is not an instant kill just feels wrong to me. Uncharted suffers from the same thing, and it makes it hard for me to want to play the game, because it looks ridiculous having to shoot guys 6+ times (including headshots) and just having them stumble around a bit.

Amazing game and concept, but the ending is THE WORST out of any game I have ever played.

I though game was good but I never finished it. I guess it is my review of it :)

No shit. After 6 years in the making, they couldn't take a week to make something better?

I think they really, really wanted to make things right with RAGE 2. Like that's going to happen.

I think there are questions as to whether Doom 4 will even be released, let alone work on RAGE 2 begun. I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda shuttered the studio before too long.

I never had any technical issues with the game, I bought it a year or so after release but the gameplay was very bland. When you can tell you're doing a repetitive action and it makes you actively think about it, you know you have bland gameplay.

Exactly. It's kind of like what someone said earlier in the thread...Borderlands basically did what RAGE did first, only better. RAGE doesn't really have any of the humor of Borderlands, the loot variety, or anything...it's really just a bland corridor shooter when it really comes down to it. You have the "open world" part that is really just driving around from place to place, occasionally shooting another vehicle, but there's not really a whole lot to do there, and the missions areas are about as linear as can be.

It's not bad, but it's not GOOD either. Bugs are mostly gone (were horrible at GA for many people), but it's just not ~good~. Borderlands beat it hands down.

I thought it was an excellent game. I bought it at release and enjoyed it. It isn't the best game I have played, but it was good.

Then again, I really enjoyed Doom 3 and taking the time to play it slowly and explore every inch of it.

So, you like RPGs but decided to play an FPS for a change and didn't like it? Wow

 I play every genre, and have for a very very long time. Borderlands is a post apocalyptic FPS with some RPG elements. Rage was an post-apocalyptic FPS with some driving segments.

Borderlands has nothing to do with post apocalyptic anything. It's just a lawless planet, Pandora, with bandits and violence. There wasn't any apocalypse. Rage on the other hand, Earth was hit by a gigantic asteroid.

Whether it technically is or isn't, it has the exact same feel in terms of environment and setting.

Which results in a lawless planet.

I'd argue that post-apocalyptic as a setting doesn't have to directly come from a traditional "apocalypse" as much as it is a certain feel and style - the gritty, destroyed cities + cobbled together by the occupants feel of both is extremely similar.

Mad Max, for instance, could have been easily on earth or Pandora, and it wouldn't have changed much either way. Swap mutants in Rage for whatever-the-hell those things were in Borderlands... very similar.

Similar environment and setting, yet RAGE is an FPS, while Borderlands is an RPG in first person.

Eh...it's way more of an FPS with some RPG elements (very few, really). If anything it's more comparable to an ARPG like Diablo, except in Borderlands you have a skill tree and that's kinda the only RPG element.

Meh.. Just buy Fallout New Vegas instead. Bethesda still gets your money but at least the game is worth it.

Fine, it's indeed more of an ARPG type of game which is nothing like an FPS.

It's annoying to read people complaining about an FPS not being an RPG. wtf

I never said it wasn't an RPG. I said it wasn't as good a game, which while a somewhat more difficult comparison to make, and is very much subjective, is still one that you can choose to make. I'm not comparing the RPG elements (or lack thereof) - I'm comparing the shooting and control elements, as well as the graphical style and feel of the games, in which I feel Borderlands gave a more complete and enjoyable experience.

I've probably played more FPS games than any other over the last 25 years; I do not dislike them at all. I've also played plenty of ARPG, US-style RPGs, and JRPGs over those years. I'm not comparing Wizardry to Doom here, but two very similar games from the experience of the user. :)

I bought RAGE and it wasn't buggy at all for me.

I was just bored out of my mind after a couple of hours and never played it again.
