I'm considering getting a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 to overclock my 2500K to 4.0GHz. PC is used mainly for gaming and internet media. Would this be okay or should i step up to something better?
My current setup is
Asus P8Z68- V/Gen3, 2500K, CX 600W (just ordered an Antec HCG 750 from a [H] member), His IceQ 6850 turbo (hoping to get another one to crossfire), and a HAF912 with 4 fans currently installed (2 coolermaster 200mm - 1 inlet in front and 1 exhaust on top; 2 exhaust 120mm - 1 on the side and 1 in the back)
 
your 2500k @ 4GHz, a Hyper 212+ should have no problem.
it's a very 'light' OC of that CPU thus little to no extra vcore will be required.

the CM Hyper 212 is a very cheap (and very decent) cooler. if you think you might be OC'ing further like 4.6+, you may want to consider a beefier cooler (Noctua or Thermalright class heatsinks) to give you little more headroom.
 
The Hyper 212+ is cooling my 2500K at 4.4GHz just fine; using RealTemp, idle temp is 23C, load temp with either Intel Burn Test or Prime95 is 60C, and the single stock fan is not audible in my Antec P180B case. If I wanted a higher clock, I would either put a second fan on the Hyper 212+ (which can be done for a push-pull configuration) or get a better cooler, but it's an excellent value for moderate overclocking.
 
Hyper212+ on a 2500K oc'd to 4.5GHz is doing great for a friend of mine. Out of the box and on it went, CM TIM and all. Great HSF, especially for it's relatively low price of about $30.
 
So what temps would u consider ideal on a OC'd 2500K for both idle and full load?

Would having my bedroom fan blowing right in front of the desktop make any difference?

Would OCing CPU have any effect on graphic performance?

I spent a few hours last night researching this. The norm for idle temps is somewhere from the low 20's to the low 30's. Personally, I have a Hyper 212+ and get 26-30C idle.

As for load temps, it depends on the overclock. At stock, most people run < 60C. At 4.2GHz, most people seem to run < 70C. I've seen an example of 4.7GHz with 1.350 volts on youtube and 67C max load, but I'm not sure that others have achieved similar results.

Personally, my temps are way above that even at stock using Prime95, so I'm wiping the cpu and heatsink down with isopropyl alcohol and re-pasting with ICD. I'm currently running 4.2GHz no voltage increase and max load with BF3 is 57C. But like I said, with Prime95 or Intel Burn Test... I was approaching 90C. Unacceptable.

Probably, but you never know. I was only thinking 4.0, but you convinced me to 4.5. Who knows, i might want to go higher if i can. So instead having to upgrade again......

I kinna did the same thing with PSU. Was initially going to get a 500W PSU, but clicked 600W when i ordered so i would have head room for any upgrades i decide to make. Only now I have had to order a 750W PSU to be able to comfortably run crossfire when i get a second gpu in the future
 
If you are trying to max out your OC headroom without having to buy another CPU cooler get the Thermalright TS120 or TS140. Nothing else comes close based on price, performance, weight and bulk, etc.

BTW there is only a 1* C difference between the TS120 and the TS140, and they both kick ass. I say get the TS120, and put the $10 difference toward something else.

That's kind of where I'm at right now, but with a Hyper 212+ cooler. I purchased a Corsair HX850 PSU cause I figured I'd be running SLI, which I will be once my 2nd 570 comes in *damn UPS* :rolleyes:

Check my sig. I have a very similar build to you.

The i5-2500k is supper friendly to overclock. I personally just changed my turbo boost to 4.5 and left everything else auto. Runs great. On Prime95 I max around 80c and idle in the low 30c. (My house stays at about 75F.)

The Hyper 212+ is great, but since I had 4 sticks of ram (with big heatsinks) I had to setup a pull configuration instead of a push.
 
Anyone know of a good place to buy a TS120 (heck, or a TS140)? It looks like the Venomous X is the only one that's easily available, but it's $50+, not $30. =( At those prices I'd just go with a Hyper 212 Evo!
 
I can throw in a recommendation for one as well. I've had mine for a couple years now and on 3 different CPU's and it works great. Getting temps in the high 40's to low 50's under Prime95 with mine.
 
Nan's is the only place that has the TS120. You could call this naive but I think there is a reason that Nan's is the only place that Thermalright has given access to, after 6 whole months. Also, if you read the TS120 review on [H], you will see that at least one person has commented that he bought the cooler (from Nan's, right when it came out and shipping was only $8). I think Nan's is the direct to consumer division of Thermalright itself, or has very close ties with TR. Also as Manny said, TR recommends Nan's, and doesn't let anyone else touch this product.

Bottom line: I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Nan's if I were in the market for the TS120 or TS140.

I don't understand how you reached this conclusion but no, they're two completely different products. The TRUE series of coolers is still high-end, is still the best in the single radiator variety of air coolers, and still kicks ass in high-end price/performance.

But OTOH if you are not going flat-out with overclocking, The Hyper 212+ is unmatched in the ~$25 range. I used to have it and I was very happy with it (paid $30). If you are thinking of spending ~$35 for the Evo, just pay $6 more and get the TS120.

The big problem with Nan's for me is the shipping costs: Last I checked it was about $11 shipping to the California, USA. Which drives the total to around $41. You can get the Hyper 212+ right now from Amazon.com with free shipping for $26. Not sure if the TS120 is worth the extra $15.
 
Highly depends on OP's goal. Me, personally, I'd say "4.5 GHz is more than plenty" and I'd get the 212+. But look at what OP wrote:

IMO there exists something called "reasonable excess". I think the True Spirit 120, in the name of reasonable excess, is great. That way, if he really decides to go for 5 GHz, the cooler won't hold him back. Plus the TS120 is very quiet, I would bet significantly more than the 212+ under load. Since we're comparing $25 to $41, IMO that $16 is a good investment.

Do you guys think this is overkill? I mean this testing puts in the same league as the kuhler 920
 
If you're going to be doing a 24/7 OC of around the typical 4.2-4.6 GHz, stash the cash and go with the cheaper 212+. You know, the kind of OC most motherboards with an Auto-OC feature can push the CPU to with ease. It'll still work for the occassional push-it-to-it's-limit OC for short term.

If you are wanting to strive for that to-the-limit OC and (hopefully) get it stable for long term operation, then it might be a wiser choice to go with the more expensive and better performing TS120 or HR-02.

Here's $0.02, keep the change. :p

I'm using that cooler and it's great. Warning, it is HUGE. Make sure it works for you on your mobo before you get it. I don't have tall RAM coolers on my memory, so it doesn't block any of my slots from being used, but if I were using Dominator or Vengeance memory, one DIMM slot would be blocked.

It looks frigging gigantic! How was installing it? Just how long of a screwdriver do you need to tighten down the rear screw?

It's kind-of bizzare in that the thing reminds me a lot of the Power Mac G5 CPUs that I swapped out recently (970's for some 970fx'es). I had to use an extender on my screwdriver to get down far enough to loosen the middle screws. From the picture it looks like that will work for the Macho, but it could be close!

It's amazing how much bigger heatsinks have gotten over the years and how I've mostly gotten used to it. I stopped really buying many at the 120mm single-fan tower cooler level though (Xigmatek 1283 and such, which _seemed_ pretty big at the time!), so apparently I've missed out on the real craziness!

I still remember the old Socket 370/A heatsinks with their little super-loud 60mm fans. I ended up buying a 80mm to 60mm adapter for one of mine because it drove me nuts.

Alright, I'm pulling the trigger. The guy on this forum has almost same board as i do, i think (P8P67 Pro vs P8Z68-V/Gen3). Just different chipset. I roughly checked the measurements on my MB and I think I should be good.
I know someone might say it's a lil excessive, but the way i see it I can give up a couple of my regular trips to KFC and McD over the next couple of weeks to a month for something i'll be using for a few years, maybe more
 
I totally agree. Roughly $40 for that cooler is a great deal. I plan to use mine as long as it'll fit on a motherboard... ;)

The base on the EVO has Continuous Direct Contact so the heatpipes make direct contact with the heatspreader on the CPU, THe 212 + has Direct Contact base but not as flat as the EVO, and the 212 has the heatpipes running through the base and do not make direct contact with the heatspreader. Also the EVO has a 4 pin PWM fan that runs at 600 &#8211; 2,000 RPM (PWM) ± 10% and pushes 24.9 &#8211; 82.9 CFM ± 10%. The 212 has a 3 pin fan that runs at 2000 RPM and moves 69.69 CFM. The 212+ has 600 - 2000 R.P.M. (PWM) and moves 21.2 - 76.8 CFM. Confusung enough?

The other difference is that the 212+ can be had for $20 regularly AR and the 212 evo is around $35. The cooling difference is about 1-3C depending on the voltage used. But for $20, it's hard to touch anything else other than maybe the Corsair A50 (but the fan on the 212+ is much nicer).

I just picked up the EVO as a placeholder til my WC stuff gets here because the only 212+ Fry's had left were all open box returns. Not doing that again.

Yeah, I wouldn't mess with that either. I'm on a 212+ right now, and I'm kind of disappointed I didn't use it sooner. Great bang for the buck. In fact, possibly the best bang for the buck on several review sites.
 
Go with the CM 212+, you wont be disappointed. I built a my friends computer with a 212+ and he's got his 2500k up to 4.5Ghz stable. His first ever custom computer and first time overclocking.

I run one on my i7 870; in fact I bought two more recently that I have sitting on my desk for any other builds I might do in the future.
 
What Kinna thermal paste should I use, and from where? Or should I assume the heat sink already has the paste applied?
