HTC Touch Pro 2

Where are you all getting applications for Windows Mobile? I checked Handango (IIRC) and the apps with $15-$45.

Similar applications for the iPhone are 99 cents.

I am in a unique situation. I can pick up the T2 and cancel with ATT or I can keep my iPhone and cancel with Verizon (not a T2 phone, but service).

Just google for stuff, there are thousands of cheap/free apps out there. MS is going to be setting up a marketplace here soon similiar to handango I assume, but I just use google. "Free gps windows mobile", etc. What kind of apps are you looking for?

What I have installed and only paid for three programs (Smartgear, SPB Backup, and CorePlayer). Rest were freeware.

I am anxiously waiting the TP2 release with ATT. I have been wanting a replacement for my Tilt and they really did not have any offerings that were so much better than what I had that I felt compelled to switch.

I do wish the TP2 had a better camera. I was looking at the Xperia X2. However, it looks like no US Carrier will be picking them up and I usually do not like to shell out that much $$ on a phone I may break anyway. Also, the TP2 has a larger screen.

The biggest thing is that I am a Qwerty Slide out Wh0re.........

My touch pro2 got here today and it's pretty cool. Going to take it to work tonight and play around with it. Posting this message from it. Keyboard feels very spacious. Definitely going to take some time to get used to.

Anyone know of a good manufacturer for screen protectors or a decent pocket friendly case?

**edit**
also, anyone know if the tp2 can install some form of flash player to view content through the browser? tried to dl and install flash, said it wasnt compatible?

The easiest way is to just install http://www.skyfire.com and use that browser for flash stuff (it all works except hulu which is blocking it right now). There are various flash hacks but since the version and level of flash isn't equal on every site it's kind of all over the place.

Alright cool, I am going to grab skyfire now. I haven't checked yet, but is that some kind of mobile version of firefox?

Also, I have done some looking around and I cannot seem to find a place that has any information as to whether or not there is a GPS feature of the phone that is free to use so that I do not have to subscribe to VZNavigator for an extra $10 a month.

I know the iphone has the maps app, and a little button that says "find me". Is there something similar in function to this on the HTC Touch Pro 2? I would prefer an actual application, not just some hack. But at this point, I am interested in anything that will give me a usable GPS without having to pay for it.

For GPS the most common free apps are:

bing
google maps
amazegps
waze

Take a look at all of them, they all do something well and all interact with your GPS for free. No need to pay Verizon unless you want their app which I've heard is decently polished. I think only amazegps does audio directions though. I personally use google maps for directions and just glance at my phone for the route. I use bing more for finding stuff in the area, like movie times, gas stations, restaurants, etc.

The thing about using google maps though, is that you have to have some idea of where you are. A street name / number or something similar is necessary. Unless you know where you are, you can't find directions since theres no way to tell your phone to find you.

Will check them all out again though. Thanks OldPueblo.

Google maps uses the GPS to lock onto where you are exactly, then you just plug in where you want to go. Same as the other programs.

I am going through the opera browser to googlemaps.com -- is there something that i have to do once i am there in order for it to lock on to where i am?

Download the google maps application. You don't use it through the web browser.

Grabbed googlemaps app and skyfire so far. Getting a no sound error from skyfire though. Googlemaps seems to be working as intended. Thank you for the links.

Supposedly these are supposed to be $199AR from Sprint as of yesterday (Oct. 1st), but I haven't had any luck. :( I only have 1 more week to sell my Touch Pro.

Did you do like I did and fuck up installing the screen protector that came with it?

mine came without a screen protector from verizon wireless. i was told by a sales rep that it was supposed to come with one, but after opening the box i found nothing.

as of now i have left the original plastic coating on the screen that has the annoying "remove before use" printed across the front until i buy a protector. going to check out your link now. thanks dude.

I believe there is a deal with T-Mobile when you sign a 2 year contract and you get the Touch Pro 2 for $50.

I got the "$199" price a couple weeks ago, but I don't think I'll qualify for the rebate because of my old plan. I E-mailed Sprint Ecare to get the deal. Here's what they wrote to me:

Your phone has qualified for all the rebates including the $150.00
instant rebate in September, 2009. You can buy any phone at the online
price which is equivalent to the cost of activating a new line. The
regular price of HTC Touch Pro2 phone is $599.99; after instant saving
of $150.00 and mail-in rebate of $100.00, this phone will cost you
$349.99.

Since you have been a valued customer, I am offering you an additional
$150.00 credit on the purchase of a new handset. After the credit, the
handset will cost you $199.99. Please reply to us after the purchase of
the handset, we will apply the promised credit on the account.

If the rebate is denied, I'm going to complain and try to get the $100 as a credit. Can't hurt to ask. :D

I ordered mine from Verizon on the 22nd... and they immediately went out of stock! I'd just go into the store and say heck with the online discount... but they're not selling them in the stores!

AT&T version was just announced. Apparently it will be available on the 8th, but don't hold me to it. No 3.5mm jack unfortunately. :(

I'll probably try to pick one up that day. Hopefully they won't give me as hard of a time as before (didn't want to sell me my Touch Pro without a contract/data plan).

Ordered my ghost armor screen protectors for my vzw tp2. Wasn't sure if the fullbody protector would come off after heavy use, so I grabbed a regular screen protector too. Sorta expensive at $48 for both shipped, but I did some research and saw that many people prefer ghost armor to Bodyguardz / Invisisble shield / phantom skinz.

Will let ya'll know when I get em.

I ordered the Ghost Armor and my phone at the same time... I was pretty surprised to see that the Ghost Armor showed up first, but as I said in an earlier post... the Vzw Touch Pro 2's are out of stock.

Isn't that remarkable? I've NEVER seen a Windows phone sell out before.

I don't know if they deliberately understocked it... thinking the same thing... or if they were just ignoring all of the people who've been clammoring for it for months. The contract price was pretty darn good for a high end WM phone too, so I don't doubt that had something to do with it too.

got my ghost armor today. was a bit tricky applying the full body protection to the tp2. i got it all done and im waiting for it to set now. it looks good, actually its barely noticable. screen feels very responsive.

will post in another day or two once its set.

I had my Treo 650 in an aluminum case. That protected me from several drops over the years. Maybe I'm daft, but what is Ghost Armor supposed to do for the phone in the event of a drop? Seems too expensive just to protect from aesthetic issues like scratches.

its thin, its a pain in the ass to put on, and it'll stop your keys/lighter from scratching the shit out of the body and more importantly the screen. supposedly its some fairly durable stuff. theres a couple videos on youtube of people trying some different methods of scratching the screen through the plastic shielding. some dude even uses a drill and doesnt manage to scratch it.

i figure if im going to drop the thing, short of having it inside of an otterbox, im pretty much screwed. doesnt really seem like theres a case for it that is practical and has a decent form factor that will protect both the screen and the body from scratches/drops and still allow for full and unhindered functionality.

Just wait for the Innocase Surface and get one of those. I used it on my Touch Pro and loved it

I really want to this, but there is no way I'm paying over $200 with a 2y contract. They must be mad. I really hate how only Sprint has the 3.5mm jack. Why would others cripple it?

Other carriers aren't crippling it. Sprint added a 3.5mm jack. The unbranded HTC version does not have one either.

To clarify:
All CDMA versions have the 3.5mm jack and can do CDMA and GSM.
All GSM versions are generally the original design and do GSM only with no 3.5mm jack.

Just noticed Verizon lowered theirs to $150. I'm going to go with that one.

NM, it was $150 for a day and it looked in stock. Now, out of stock and $200 again.
