i know there's probably a bazillion threads that cover this, but whatever. How do do i setup a computer to fold? The hardfolding website is down, so if anyone can help thats great.
 
FIRST POST RAWRWRRRR!!!!!

There's an FAQ sticked up top, try that.

quick 'n dirty start guide:
1. go to www.folding.stanford.edu/download
2. choose the appropriate client (if you're on Windows i recommend the console client with service installer)
3. double-click the install file (or chmod +x and ./ it)
4. enter whatever name you want, make sure your team number is 33 to support The [H]orde!

To get setup quick, I'd recommend using the files at that link. It's an autoinstaller created by unhappy_mage to make all our lives easier. Welcome! :D

yeah im super interested in setting up and old computer to fold. Just a quick question, what is the minimum specs for folding. I know, a broad question, but would sub 1ghz work?
 
ok another question. how many points does a single WU give me? Cuz the thing says that the frame is almost complete, but then there's 499 more. So once i have one done, is that one point?

yay! glad you're already so in to it :)

< 1Ghz machines are called "crappers," and are just fine for folding (i have a 350mhz pII folding :p), you should put them on "timeless tinkers" though

that means, when configuring your folding client, enter "yes" for "request work units with no deadlines"

this way they never miss the deadline as with time-sensitive WU's (work units)

WU's differ, some take longer to complete than others and thus give more points

Is there a way, theoretically ofcourse, to have a folding program running in the background of someones computer without them knowing, or sensing a slowdown of their computer? Like could i borg a freinds computer without him knowing just for fun? Not that i ever would, i read the rules thoroughly.
 
DO NOT DO NOT borg without persmission...that is very very bad...it reduces this program to spam and malware.

as for not letting them see it...in the config it asks if you want it to run as a service...select yes and reboot. this is good for all computers since it doesnt even both you then :)

BUT DO NOT BORG WITHout PERMISSION.


edit: And just tell your friend that he is doing something good and thats that :)
 
I find having stupid friends who could not find it anyways works best.
 
at the hardfolding website it has rankings for all the folding teams across the net, are they accurate? Are we really the top folding community?!?! Oh, and since i installed the graphical interface for the fold@home program am i wasting cpu power running it versus the console version? I dont run it with the display open.
 
the graphical version is just very buggy .. The console works much better all around with it running as a service. If you want to see what it is doing go to the directory you installed the fah502(4)-console file into and look for a file named FAHLog.txt that tells you everything it has done. All in all a much happier coexistence(IE no windows you have to minimize, cant be closed easily--unless you do what I do and put a shortcut to Services on your desktop (yes I have a LOT of stuff I turn on and off depending upon what I am doing)

i'd hazard a yes.

but more importantly, as tormond noted, the graphical version is incredibly buggy. a headache. and just ick.

it is a much better idea to install theconsole version as a service. if you want to be able to graphically monitor it then check out EMIII , as i said before.

and yes, we are the #1 folding community in the world =D
 
We even beat out google!??! Ok on a side note, would it be a good idea to download the console version and quit all my progress, well only 12 frames, on the graphical version? Or just wait to be done with my first WU?

We haven't beaten Google yet, but we are on a path to do so in approximately 665 days. See this link...

On the side note, I believe it is best to complete a WU once you have started it as the researchers at Stanford are expected WUs to be returned. I think the Graphical client allows you to set it to pause when done (or perhaps stop when done?). Someone with more experience can tell you how to stop the graphical client after it completes that first WU and make sure that it is sent before switching over to the preferred console client.

By the way, I've been running the Graphical client on "crappers" with Win98 (set to timeless WUs) without any problems, but all new installs are the Console version as a service.

they'll just switch the machines over to someone else's names (i.e. reconfigure them, that's all)

this is what you do...download the console version...save it to the "C:\Program Files\Folding@home" folder...move that folder to the C driver....open the command prompt and type "cd \Folding@home"...then type "fah504-console.exe -config"...answer the questions (enter keeps them the same) and make sure to say "yes" to run as service question and then restart your computer

it will pick up the WU the GUI version was crunching....thats what i did.

wow, did anyone else notice mustangworld.com is in the top 100 folding teams? I just checked their forums and all thats there are pictures of hick weddings, links to porn, and racial jokes. Not a mention of folding...
