So I bought the components for my rig last spring and put them all together without much though about overclocking until later. Tonight I get the fever, so I fire up the BIOS and start playing settings, get to about 2.9 Ghz and realize that I'm running pretty hot at idle already (~60 C). I'm kinda miffed because these cpus are supposed to be able to handle around 3.2 on stock cooling I thought? So I play around with some settings, and get it down to 55 C, but this is still pretty hot for a pretty weak OC. Now I'm getting suspicious so I reset everything to default and let it idle for about 10 minutes, and see that it's idling at 57 C! Wtf? Not only that, but at full load, it climbs up to about 72-74 in just a few minutes. Did I get a shitty cpu? Do I need to lap this thing just to get it to perform at normal expectations? I've already cleaned off and reseated the cpu with artic clean and as5. What gives?

Part of the "problem" with the temps is that the fan speed is probably thermally controlled. 50C+ is standard with thermally controlled fan. You have to disable it in bios and see what you get.

3.2Ghz with stock cooling is pushing it. I'd say closer to 3.0Ghz is probably a better goal.
 
Get rid of that stock heatsink asap, won't do if you are going to overclock.
 
Well the thing is, I'm not overclocking right now (otherwise I would have stuck this in the OC forum). I'm just concerned that this seems to be a pretty high idle temp for stock clock settings and a stock fan. Am I wrong?

for reference, i am also using E6600 with Gigabyte 965 DQ6. i have been running my cpu at 3.24Ghz for the last six months (from the day i've bought it) at stock volt (1.325v) on stock heatsink. my processor idles at 39-40c and jumps to 56-58c running orthos. the weather here is pretty hot, temp around 28-30c. are you using the Auto voltage option in bios?

Edit: yes! you are right and imo there must be something wrong with your setup.
 
^Thanks for that Onic, that's more of the performance I was expecting. At least somebody's getting what they paid for... :mad: To answer your question, yeah, all voltages are on auto right now.

By setup, what are you referring to? I'm beginning to suspect that maybe I have a concave HSF or something, but I'd like to explore all other possibilities before I go voiding warranties. :p

onick's performance seems out of the ordinary. I've never seen a 3.2Ghz E6600 run under 60C load temp with the stock HSF.

Did you check to see if your fan was thermally controlled in bios?
 
Fan is thermally controlled. 1% < 30C, 100% > 70C. Those are the default settings.

*edit* Pulled off the HSF one----- more time and used coffee filters to clean everything with alcohol, then laid as thin a strip of AS5 as I could. This seemed to help a good amount, dropped idle temps from 55C to about 51C, but this still seems high. Ideas?

Whats the room's ambient temprature? What case are you using with what fans? Were is the box with in the room. Those will also effect your performance.
 
well, the only problem i can see is your voltage setting to Auto. i think in Auto settings your mobo is feeding too much voltage to your processor while you over clocked. you should try to manually set your voltage to 1.325v for your processor in Bios. set your fsb to 335. and i hope you will have no problem running your processor at 3ghz with stock voltage. and the temp will be around 60c on load and 40c idle. you can try programs like cpu-z or everest to see how much voltage your processor is getting. 51c is still too hot for idle temperature. the only time i saw mine idling around 47c was when i was trying to run mine at 3.6ghz with 1.47v. at that stage i was only brave enough to run couple of round of super pi. hope that helps

I am wondering that too, cause I solved a lot of heat issues by getting a better case. I am talking about 15-20C difference. Some cases are just not good for heat.

I have a E4500 @ 3 with stock heatsink, and I idle in the low 30's in Atlanta during the summer, so....
