I have 14 SMP clients running and 10 of them just downloaded "Chewy" WU's!!

Going from 27k PPD with 12 SMP clients down to 26k with 14 SMP with the new quad because of all these WU with wonky points. Oye! Man someone stole my MOJO!:confused:

It can't last for you hopefully. Knock on wood I haven't gotten one in a while. But I only have a single SMP to pick from so i guess I have a lot less chance anyway. 10 out of 14 though...damn. That is just bad luck.

All 24 are crunching fast proteins .......... :D

What are client config settings ?
If you have the "Advanced Methods" flag set then you will get the work units which are just out of beta, which are the chewy ones at this moment.

Look towards the end of your client config file.
In the "Client Type" section, type should read 0 not 3.

5 outta 6 are running 2653s and its the quad that has the chewy unit. I was hoping to see where my PPD stabilized after my last upgrade is finally complete.

Yes I have it set for advanced methods. Hmm well I'll be reconfig'n them all for the Chimp challenge so might be a good time to visit that setting. So for that challenge I should set advanced methods to no? That will help ensure chewies are avoided?

At the moment, Advanced Method set to Yes = Chewy work units.

To change the client.cfg file by hand, I use Windoze notepad.
Dont use a more advanced text editor as it can add carrage returns that you dont see but stop FAH reading the config file.

Stop FAH folding.
Open the config file, change needed entry, close, save.
When you do start FAH back up, just make sure it uses the new client config file and doesn't default back to "anonymous (team 0)".
Easy ............ :p

I like to change the shortcut to fah -configonly

using that ensures no issues.
 
Yes, disable advmethods to make sure you get fast proteins. Ironically, I wanted to get a chewy WU on my Q9450 to see if the 45nm tech and 1066 RAM help with them but no luck yet :p Murphy's Law at his finest ^_^.

You can have some of mine, if you want. :D Like Sunin, about 80% of my SMP's picked up large WU's this time around.

Yes. Last summer, 95% of the WU are chewy with a mix of 2608/9/10 and 2652. IIRC, it dried up somewhere around october then all we get is fast ones like 2653 and 2605.

 
Speaking of chewy units... My poor Xeon MP downloaded P1487 last night. Takes 4 hours per %. :eek:

She just cannae take it Capt'n! :(

 
I know we all go over this often, but we are doing this for the science, not the points. I hate the drop in PPD as much as the next guy, but i can never bring myself to change my options to get certain WU. I'll fold whatever Stanford throws my way.

If I want more PPD I'll add more processing power, I won't change my settings to get a "better" WU. That would be {s}oft

Still running 2, Far as I can tell I haven't missed a pref deadline. But if they put any more molassas or the like in these WU I think many of us will have to drop back.

Thought:
The new quads that you can get a nice OC on (but expensive) might prove their worth after a while because they might still be able to run 2x clients if the WU get "worse".

I have been considering this on the quad but I think its just way too much work monitoring that and adding the second client when it gets 2563's and then shutting one down when a big one hits. It just seems easier and more time efficient to let them both run always

I'm still running both clients. No problem with the deadlines, so its cool. Now, If I was getting those 4 hour / 1% monsters that I read somebody downloaded, I'd probably drop to a single clinet then. :eek:


 
Oye now 11 out of 14 have chewies... Just call me Chewbacca! Yikes!! Down to 25,326 PPD

 
Still no chewy's here .......... :D

Before the farm rebuild when I was running with the "Advanced Methods" flag set, I was running around 99% chewy's.
Durring the rebuild, I set the flag to off, changed from client type 3 to 0.
Since then NO chewy's.

The real chewy ones p2619, bring my Xeon's to their knees.
Down from 1,600 PpD per client to only 800 PpD per client.
Hence the reconfig.

I would guess most people running VMs are not getting the chewy work units. This is probably becuase the chewy ones are for quad core only machines. The VMs make the client think you have a dual core instead of a quad core.

Not true.
My Xeon's was running 4x VM's with advanced methods got the worst chewy, p2619.
Now my Xeon's running 4x Vm's without advanced methods dont.
They still all run with 999 Meg of memory available to FAH, so I'm not memory limiting my folders to only 512 meg to try and get good work units.
I've just changed the client type from 3 to 0 to stop me getting p2619.
I'll chew all the others if I get them, I just dont want to chew p2619 again if possilbe.

Towards the end of the client.cfg file there is a section for client type, which says what type of work unit you want to get.
Type 0 = no advanced methods flag. You want standard work units.
Type 3 = advanced methods flag is set. You want work units that are just out of beta testing.

At a guess, Type 1 & Type 2 are for the timeless and beta work units, so don't set the client to them.
There are no timeless work units any more so no point in running with that flag.
And unless your part of the beta team, its bad for the science to run beta work units as Stanford has no feedback from you when thing go wrong, which they will with beta work units.

Sometimes the work unit that are just out of beta testing give a better PpD than the standard ones as they carry a nice bonus to their points.
Other times they are chewy.
At the moment the SMP clients are the chewy type.
So your better wiith the advanced methods off.

I can’t tell for sure but it looks like my folding graphs are matching my stock market graphs……….what they call a downward trend.:eek: \

 
Blah, it must be going around. After a steady diet of 2653's, I have 4 consecutive 3050's.

Funny part is, on the quad, it folds the big units faster..... go figure.

 
Wow, talk about a PITA.... after running a 3043 to 7% 3 times for the fail, I just got another 2653.

What a waste of an hour!
