Homefront - March 2011

im going to sleep... tommorow well have ton of reviews...

metro 2033 was not enough for me to pre-purchase

I'll pass you a book on modern warfare. There's something called sea and air supremacy that will be needed to launch an invasion over an ocean. The US has aircraft and ships in a league of their own. Do you even know how many operational carriers Russia and China have combined?

As much as I'm looking forward to Homefront and its story, you are 100% right. And over sea invasion of the continental United States is so unlikely.. I mean, it wont ever happen. Despite all the probabilities, even if our Navy and coastal utilities were knocked out we have so, SO much military infrastructure throughout the land mass that it would be virtually impossible to sustain any kind of attack.

I dont want to derail too much but if the average citizen knew how many hidden AA/SAM sites were located near their houses/neighborhood they would be surprised. Well at least here in Southern California, there are hidden AA and other military bunkers sprawling throughout average Joe cityscape. My brother is an environment engineer and commercial real estate broker and you'd be floored with the shit he has access to.

Regardless, mainland invasion really isn't feasible at this point but that doesn't stop Homefront from being a fun, fantasy game. I'm there, and going to pick it up shortly.

WOLVERINES!

pretty fun game so far, not ground breaking but, the maps are nice and great terrain and objects, the sunlight glare looks awesome. im liking it so far, no lag online, just minor bugs ive noticed so far. considering the game just launched, the online is smooth, nothing like that mess when black ops came out.the vehicle controls aint great, but serviceable. worth the $30 i payed for it.(had a coupon code and sold the metro 2033.)

The US could easily be invaded...

a massive surprise strike against key US allies causing a regional war, drawing the majority of US forces to the region to assist, whilst a 2nd or 3rd party (eg. China + Russia) invades the US once forces on US soil are depleted.

Once on US soil, the threat of using nukes becomes much less of an option, and both China/Russia are more than capable of launching their own nukes if attacked by them.

One heck of a gamble... but possible if US forces are spread thinly globally.

Look, there can be no surprise strikes against any US allies/NATO, whenever anyone amasses forces it's a known thing. No one can do anything big hidden in this world.

And the US would never deploy most of their forces, they just never do that. They always keep their country secure. Who wouldn't.

Indeed. This isn't a "War Games" kind of world , things are known well in advance and without question the military hardware being used by the US is beyond what anyone else has.

We are the least likely country to ever "get" invaded. We spend many many times more on Defense than any other country ($658 billion approved by congress).

North Korea is a piss poor country with 81 percent of its people starving to death .. the only choice is to become a solider or die of starvation along with your family. No money for any kind of real massive army, no infrastructure in place for a power grid in nearly all of the country or even lacking reserves of fuel , they have shitty intercontinental ballistic missiles that fail to reach even 1/4 the distance of what we have. They have a shaky political system thats currently in a power flux due to Kim's continual failing health (from what military reports are claiming recently) and a Son thats going to come to power that was educated in the western beliefs and believes in some western ideals.

The only country in the world that poses a true possible (but extremely unlikely) power strong enough to invade us is China but China has over $1 trillion dollars invested in economy and loans to the US government , don't think for a minute they would throw that away for a doomed invasion attempt.

The games story is just pure fiction at this point in history , yes its an interesting fiction ..but fiction none the less. I'm pretty sure I'll wait for this to drop in price with some patches in place. Perhaps it'll hold me over until the BF3 beta starts.

It's a story to a game, for god's sake. It's amazing how simply butthurt some people are getting over the mere idea of their precious country being invaded.

Even that is laughable. China has no force projection capabilities. The US is the only nation in the world that can invade distant countries. If China tried to invade they would not be able to land a single troop on US soil.

It's amazing how many people want to argue this. I am not going to derail this thread anymore than it already is, especially now that the game is released. My final statement on the matter:

Our military is entirely voluntary. They, as when I was in, are there for a paycheck, in addition to service to the country. A bankrupt America will result in a stubstantial reduction of forces. All the technology in the world won't help if there isn't enough people to man those ships and planes and pull those triggers.

Don't forget that the story is dated 16 years in the future. Who knows what will happen in that time? I remember reading that China has more iron in their ship yards being built into ships than we have in our entire navy. Don't ask me where, it has been to long since I read it.

Whatever. It is a story and it is fun to discuss. I would just hope that our country learns something from history.

Aww, isn't irrational patriotism cute!

mh. do you know why the russians decided to go for subs and long range bombers instead of carriers? hint: has nothing to do with money.

It does make me laugh at the false sense of security people seem to have thinking their "homeland" is secure and that no one would ever dare a frontal invasion. The fact is its very real, and not a far stretch, IMO China could be a likely contestant and could easily land forces on western soil. The amount of chaos and panic that can be generated through the economy and using simple tech (think blackouts on a major scale) would more than cripple / handicap any defending force. Not to mention the shear difference in forces size (And don't even comment on tech, China has plenty....They just aren't as public with it)

The games story is very interesting in my opinion and while an invasion is not likely in the immediate future the fact of the matter is, IT IS EXTREMELY POSSIBLE.

SLEEP WELL.

another mediocre 4-5 hour game. is it really so damn hard to make a 15-20 hour single player campaign? not everybody gives a crap about multi.

this... The story while impossible would be interesting to play out if it had some depth and length to it.

There is such disparity between major retail reviews and actual gameplay reviews from the [H]. It's hard to flesh out what is what.....

all you can do is read the professional reviews you usually agree with, and pay close attention to user reviews (which can be either brutally honest, or sometimes overly picky). overall the game looks very mediocre from what i've read.

considering the MP differences between console and pc its pretty hard to judge from that, so sick of IGN doing one review for all platforms.

Most of these outlets do that, though. One generic console review, copy and paste, maybe change a couple of obvious sentences for the PC version, if they even bother with PC games...voila.

I'm not really sure how much "better" the PC version really could be.

The more I take in on this the more I'm thinking "Steam sale/sale bin" fodder.

Yeah sadly that's what it's looking like. For IGN to say the SP is way too short means it must be really ridiculously short, seeing as they have no problem with a slew of other shooters with 6-8 hour campaigns.

And SP is always my primary reason for purchasing a game.

i cant believe no one can give us a heads up on the game? How is the overall feeling of the gameplay?

I only played for about an hour and it wasn't bad, but not great.

Sound location needs to be updated as well as the ported over mouse control feel.

Multi was fun and different I think the characters blend into the environment better than most games. It has potential. It's comes back to if the patch it or not. The problem with smaller studios is that dice/IW/Treyarch set the bar kind of high to enter the market. It sucks that I'm used to rpging a wall and have it make a hole to enter into a building in bc2. There isn't much destructible environment that I noticed. It sucks that a lot of buildings are just boarded up and can not enter them. However, the maps feel good.

Has a slight GRAW feel for some reason. Still undecided until I play more. I only paid $30 so It's not a huge investment.

Also, US really only excels in 1 thing and that is training. Which Israel rivals/beats us in that. We are losing air superiority to China and Russia rather quickly. I think The F-35 will go the way of the F-22 as well which means we have really old planes. As well as in the age of satellite guided ordnance a navy isn't as important as before. The story is that this Korea bands together and gas goes to $20+ a gallon and it cripples our economy and at our weakest time they invade, almost like a civil war is about to break out in the us. Not that far fetched.

Well, I think I bit the bullet on this one a little too soon on D2D. Haven't played it yet, but didn't know how short this game was. I hate that. No FPS game today should be 5 hours long. I'm at least glad I paid 40 and not 50 or 60.

We'll see how it goes tonight, but right now, just from some of the comments, I'm a little dissapointed with myself.

I know exactly how you feel. I just dont have the time to get into multiplayer games anymore. I wish game devs would cater to people like you and I. 5 hours is very short, but I'd pay $20 for only the singleplayer portion of the game. I guess like you, I'm waiting until its that $9.99 steam sale. Too bad, the plot/setting are interesting.
