Um...you do know that you can install another OS on a device, right? And, if you want to use NewEgg, we can do that too.

Cheapest x86 Windows 8 tablet:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131397

What you get for the same price in a laptop:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216031
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215623

Oh, and the tablet doesn't include a keyboard, mouse, ROM drive, has 5 - 7 inches less screen space, an Atom processor versus a Core i5 or AMD A8, 2 GB less RAM, 1/10th the storage space, can't replace the battery...blah, blah, blah.

Lots less computer power for the same price.

my local university has these cheap cheap cheap

I would probably call a StinkPad x41 more useful than a keyboard-less tablet since you could enter data on one with both hands instead of using thumbs or holding it in one hand and poking the screen with the other. Heat-deprived-stellar-object would probably argue something about it not being new, but for $75, it's still a better deal. :)

oh don't worry we go further lol

I'm with the DoodlingFeline. $600 for a netbook on a diet with crappy storage space and $900 for an Ultrabook with 50% battery capacity is too much.

Silly Microsoft, expensive is for Apple.

Seriously, they should have broken into the market with cheap tablets. If those were successful, they could have tried an expensive one. As it stands, they released 2 tablets in the "Apple range" of the price spectrum, and the vast majority of people that are going to spend that much are just going to buy the Apple product.

costs only $50 to add a touchscreen to a netbook and takes about an afternoon of work

they should replace the i5 with an i3 and cut $200+ from the pricetag. In this consumption focused form factor an i5 is completely out of place. Lacking a proper gpu you wont be playing games, and no one sane uses tablets for "serious" work.
I don't think there's a lower-power Core CPU than the one going in this. To go lower, you have to go down to Atom. And if you want to go cheaper, power consumption goes up.

It's really an i5 in name only.

Yes I know and I have, at least with the HP Slate 500, the predecessor of the HP Slate 2. Windows 8 doesn't work well with this hardware particularly as a tablet because of the 1024x600 resolution which is too low to support Metro apps.

And, if you want to use NewEgg, we can do that too.

If one wants or needs a laptop, then one would get a laptop. A laptop doesn't do the things I bought the 500T for. S-pen, great battery life and low weight. These characteristics aren't on that laptop.

Metro apps...you mean the ones that don't allow multitasking because they force fullscreen mode, right?

So the above laptops don't run the same programs...ooookay. *headpats* Whatever you say.

That's your version of multitasking ? Seriously? Might as well rename Microsoft Windows to Microsoft 3/4 Window and 1/4 Sidebar.

Don't make me laugh because its not a good joke or an example take your Windows Metro shit and try to peddle it elsewhere because no matter how much you polish a Piece of Shit its still a piece of shit.

When I can have an excel document, PDF document, RDP window and Console open at the same time on a single screen then I can give you permission on UI usability.

Calc.exe AND MS Paint! Amazing!

Not sure what running the same programs has to do with a digital pen, battery life and weight.

Oh, you wanted a pen, something easy to carry, and battery life? How does a month of battery life sound and 170 grams with a pen? Twelve years ago is calling...oh, and it has a calculator too, but it does task switch between full screen apps a little faster since it's OS has a better UI design. Not totally a fair match, but it's close. :p

Also, the $600 laptops that you're avoiding talking about are still cheaper than a Clover Trail tablet and have a lot more of everything.

You know, if these were the Windows 2.0 days, I would have shit myself at the site of both of those programs running at once.
Who would have thought that with Windows 8, two apps at once would be so kewl!

i've lost count of how many programs linux distros have had open at once, that was truly mind blowing

It's so true. I'm using Mint 14 (go away Red Birdie, its great..so there) right this instant and with a MP3 player running, the file browser, LibreOffice's Writer, FireFox with two tabs, and system monitor open, I'm using 416 MB of RAM and no swap. Since this laptop has 2 GB, it can load a ton more stuff without even leaving system memory. *squee*

Yup, that's the version I picked to try Mint again. I sorta had a Knoppix thing for a few months. It's not bad, but Mint is a much more complete distro and it seems pretty resource friendly, but I've only been using it for a few days. This Sony Vaio was so crashy under Windows XP doing anything in DirectX and I'm pretty sure it was a GMA 915 driver causing most of the problems. It's been super-stable in Mint so far though.

This one seems ok? Would be more fitting! It's got even more castrated graphics, but I don't think they really care about that. :D

Ok:

But no one is going to want to use these programs for extended periods of time like this with touch. If people wanted this kind of UI on a tablet then Windows tablets should have done better than they have in the past. You're criticizing the touch elements of Windows 8 for not being complex enough but people largely rejected Windows tablets because the desktop UI is mouse and keyboard driven and too complex for tablets.

OneNote isn't MS Paint.

I had one of these. Comparing this to a Wacom digitizer tablet running OneNote is beyond meaningless.

I'm pretty sure we were talking about multitasking in Metro with Metro/Store apps (modern ui...whatever), not reverting to the desktop to do what every other computer with an older OS already does with older software that already exists. Then again, it's pretty typical heatlesssun stuff to try to escape by either adding extra parameters or changing the subject.

Also, $600 dollar laptops are a lot more powerful, feature-rich, and capable than a similarly priced Windows 8 tablet which is a point you're still trying to avoid admitting is true.

I'm using Mint 14 (go away Red Birdie, its great..so there) right this instant and with a MP3 player running, the file browser, LibreOffice's Writer, FireFox with two tabs, and system monitor open, I'm using 416 MB of RAM and no swap. Running Chrome with 11 tabs, two terminals (iftop and F@H GPU), gkrellm, Virtualbox with Win 7 & Steam, Nautilus with NFS connection, and just opened Calculator + Gimp just for heat's Win 8 reference.
Only 4GB on this system and one VM at a time is killing me, I really need to ugprade to a mobo with support for 16-32GB of memory, there is so much more I could be doing with VM's right now.

Oh, and btw, LULZ @ YOUR MINT SKRIBBELKAT!!! :p
I am impressed at the memory usage of your system though.

OneNote is a lot more limited than MS Paint because it doesn't have as many image editing tools. I was just trying to be friendly by offering it the benefit of doubt.

Wacom...wackcomm, whatever. You poke a screen with a stick and it draws lines. Who cares what the brand name of the device is that you're doing it with. That's just like saying an geletin dessert isn't as good as Jello when they're pretty much the same thing.

$600 dollar laptops are more powerful.

Yes they are, and it's unfortunate that Microsoft needs to sell these tablets at such a high price, especially for their limited functionality (due to form-factor).
But I do have to a agree with heatlesssun on one thing, this tech is relatively new (tablet + Win 8) and if it's still around in a few years, the prices should start to drop.

Look at the price of laptops, I remember in 2004, it was the first year that laptops were sold for under $1000, Dell was selling them for $999.
Tablets in 2020 may go the same way, being $900 and later being around $300 in the future, similar to what netbooks of 2012 are to laptops of 2004 were.

I could be wrong, but I remember touch-based laptops from 2006 that were around $1700, and they can now be had for sub $500.
As the tech and the industry changes, so will the price and market exposure.

I don't have a beard, so I'll just give up now and not do the whole distro argument. Mint sucks. You win. ;)

Mint doesn't suck, but it is fun to suck on mints. ;)
Actually, I really like LMDE, so if I give you a hard time, it's just because I actually like it in secret.

Also, contrary to popular believe, I don't have a beard either, though I do tend to not shave once the weekend hits.

Yup, they are expensive, but they're not really new technology. Maybe if they get mass produced they'll be cheaper, but they might not see huge volumes of production at the prices they're selling for right now. So, for now, Compaq Presarios from Walmart are better than Surface RT tablets and cost less. $600 laptops are more powerful than clover trail tablets and I'm sure people can buy lots more powerful laptops at the same price point as the Surface.

You don't have a beard??? Who even lets you install a Linux distro? Where are the other bearded people with their sticks and stuff to whack you when you try to download one? This is a travesty!

Lightweight.

I have over 100 tabs open in Firefox right now :p

Then again, it's pretty typical heatlesssun stuff to try to escape by either adding extra parameters or changing the subject.

But this was on a tablet using touch which isn't something common to other OSes and there is no Metro version of Excel. And really, how many people with tablets would ever do something like this? The screen is too small being the biggest issue. Advanced multi-tasking scenarios like this simply aren't things that people do with tablets. I'm not saying that Metro shouldn't be improved to do these things, I would have to be if it's supposed to replace the desktop, but that's not at all what it's about right now.

Also, $600 dollar laptops are a lot more powerful, feature-rich, and capable than a similarly priced Windows 8 tablet which is a point you're still trying to avoid admitting is true.

And you're totally ignoring the specific reasons I gave as to why someone might want something like a 500T over that laptop. If that laptop is so feature rich then where the Wacom digitizer?
