Help ASAP need cheap Nvidia based video card

I lost my video card last night didn't have time to break down case to see what I have. I don't play games! I watch a movie or two per year. I do use Adobe CS5.

Can some of you point me in the right direction for a cheap replacement. I do know the card I have was bought when the SLI technology had only been out like 4-6 months. So probably any Nvidia based product will be better.

Why Nvidia JUST becasue I'm use to their stuff.

Sorry for the lack of info. I built the PC probably 6 years ago I'm thinking. I know I should know more about it. But since I built the PC I haven't kept up on what new.

PLEASE HELP! Hoping to spend as little as needed because I don't need anything powerful.

They are so far apart its difficult to do actual benchmarks, but (at many resolutions/settings) the 8800 GTS 320 meg is double the performance of the 8600. And the gts 250 is about 3 times the performance of the 8800 GTS. This wont translate out to 6 times the performance because there will be other factors involved, but yes.... these cards are in a whole different ballpark then your old 8600.

Well looking at the numbers I would want to go with the 8800GTS OR HIGHER! I work in the medical field and don't have a lunch today to look up any thing.

COULD someone give me a "good price" for the 8800 or 250 or 450 or 5770?

I understand I'm looking at $100+ but I want to keep it low BUT get a good card!

Could someone help a brother out and post me a link where to buy one. I need to get it out UPS today!

That 8800GTS is long out of production, it was a higher-end card that was around the same time your 8600GT was. it's just used there as an example. The modern equivalent for it is the GT240, which scores 330% in that chart. GT240s can be had for $70 off newegg.
 
The other thing I would mention is your system is still very much viable for about anything. The Q6700 is a great CPU, you have a decent mobo/ram, harddrives, etc. Your video card was definitely being underutilized, and upgrading it will do more for your system with anything graphics related than any other single change. The word "bottleneck" is over-used a lot in these forums, but you have a true bottleneck with that video card.

BTW, you have a 530 watt PSU listed, what brand and model is it? A gts 250 or 450 will draw a little more power than your 8600 but a quality 530 watt, even if its a few years old should be plenty for what you got.
 
wow.. Did everyone miss the fact that he doesn't play games.. Giving relative gaming performance is pretty much worthless here.

The ideal card is going to be run of the mill with lost of vram for adobe cs5

I'm pretty sure CS5 uses CUDA doesn't it? So, the faster the card the better?
 
Go with what bastage said above, save some money, and get better performance for what you do.

I can't remember the Brand BUT I do remember that the PSU is Nvidia SLI certified. Will that be good enought to run a GTS250 or GTS450?
 
SLI Certified can mean anything as low as 8500gt in SLI, lol. That's why I'd recommend checking the PSU label for at least:

brand
wattage
(hopefully) product line/name

Anything from a decent brand over 400W will be fine, however.

You're going to have to open your case up, eventually :p
 
The GT240 doesn't use a great deal more than the 8600GT. The GTS450 will, however, so you need to be careful about that.
 
Your XFX video card should have a lifetime warranty, no? I'd try to get it replaced, if only to have a backup card.
 
Is there a site that I can "check" if my PSU is rated to handle the GTS450? Or should I just post the info here tonight?
 
Well not really, as it depends on the brand/model, more than it does the wattage, because that wattage can be distributed differently, or if it's a cheap brand, it could be inaccurate. (Plenty of companies out there sell 200W PSUs and label them 600W units)
 
Its already been said here but anything above a gts220 would be overkill. CS5 uses Cuda, but you won't notice a difference unless you are using a professional custom filter on a picture that is 10+ megapixel is size. Even then its only going to be a matter of a couple seconds difference.

Again thanks to all! I went to Fry's on the way home and was concerned about if I had a quality PSU or not and started thinking about the comments about overkill if I'm not gaming and all. So instead of the GTS450 for $80 after rebate. I played it safe and got a EVGA GeForce 210 - 1 GB DDR3 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card for $44.99 out the door and a $15 rebate from EVGA so final cost is $29.99! I looked online and I can't find anything cheaper than $34.59

Win 7 Enterprise plug-n-play found it installed the lastest drivers and I'm done!

1.) I do have one question HOW MUCH FASTER IS THIS CARD to my old 8600GT that had 256mb ddr3. This card has 1024mb ddr3

2.) At some point I remember losing the power supply so I replaced it with a ULTRA 750watt ATX PSU Model # ULT-LSP750P is this a decent power supply? And what kind of a card could it run that is out today so I have so idea IF I want to upgrade in the near future?

3.) I assume my video card is the "bottleneck" point still so if I wanted the video card to match up with the rest of my system for performance what would you all suggest?

And AGAIN all of you really made today less stressful. I hate to make bad decisions or waste money and all help was greatly appreciated.....

For 3d gaming its actually slower. The gts210 might have a few new features in terms of 2d and video tras/decoding though. So in terms of 2d (like photoshop), its an upgrade.

Ultra is lower end PSU maker. With your system, I doubt that you will be stressing it much though. It should be able to handle 2 of any card on the market right now, its just not as solid as some of the other psu's out there.

Again, you are looking into the wrong market. If you had 2 of the same spec computer sitting right next to each other and one had a GTS210 (a $40 card) and the other had four GTX580s ($2500 worth of video cards), you wouldn't be able to tell the difference with the applications you use. Its like a 15 year old who only eats cereal for every meal buying a $1200 chefs knife for "better performance in making cereal".

the 210 will do you fine
 
The 8600GT is about 8 times as powerful as the G210. The G210 is the lowest performing card that's been released for about 5 or 6 years, since the AGP days, worse than the budget end cards before its time, and on par with most integrated graphics.
Of course, if you don't need any of the actual performance of the card this is a non-issue, but yoiu do have a vastly slower card than the one you replaced.
The Ultra 750W PSU was a bit of a waste. Ultra units are pretty poor most of the time reliability-wise as they're built to a very low standard, and you certainly don't need 750W (not even 250W) to run a G210.

If it were me I would have either kept the old PSU with the G210, or if upgrading the PSU gone with an upgraded card like a GTS450 or HD5770, and gone with a 450W unit from a good brand like Corsair, Seasonic, etc.

I contacted XFX and my 8600GT is going to be replaced most likely with the 9500GT so that card will be going back into the PC.
