HD7950 $449.00?

That's what I heard too. If it's as fast as the 580 the price will be alright, but it won't quite fly off the shelves, at least I don't think so. $400 would be much better.

I agree completely, I think for $400 it would be almost a sure thing for me, as it stands I may just wait to see what Kepler has to offer. I've even heard a $500 dollar rumor, which is pretty much out for me.

It'll fly off the shelves regardless of price, lots of people need to have the "latest and greatest" no matter what the cost.

Obviously this card will be slower than the 7970s but is it better than a 6970? I want a new card but won't be playing any games that demand top of the line. I'm just afraid to buy 6970 as they are old now. I hear the 79xx use less power as well.

So is 7950 3gb better in all aspects than a 6970?

i have a feeling the price of the 7970 and the 7950 reflect that AMD knows Nvidia is a ways out for releasing their next GPUs.

AMD probably wishes they would have priced the 5870 like this since Nvidia was so far out (6months) with Fermi and they failed to capitalize on that.

Who knows but if Nvidia is 4+ months out on release and AMD knows this then i'm not suprised at the pricing.

7990 for 849.00 thats nuts!

Seems to be a trend in recent years. The price are always ridiculously high on release, and its best to wait till the market is abundance of them for the price to stabilize.

This is likely the case. They spent three generations really giving a great value for their product. They have enough goodwill videocard side to cash in some this round.

Then when nvidia responds they can drop prices likely a great deal. role reversal really between nvidia and AMD

$849.99 is such a stupid price for a video card, how anyone can pay that much is beyond me

Why anyone would pay $250,000 for a car is beyond me too, but if I was a multi-millionaire I might consider a Ferrari even though it is completely unnecessary of an expense.

Honestly seems like a good price relative to the 7970 at $550. You pay $850 for close to the performance of $1100 in 7970s, judging by the 6990. Of course overclocking might suffer but if you have a lot of money and don't want to fool with stuff like that it seems cost effective to me.

Sadly AMD/NVIDIA aren't in it for the love of the gamer. It's all about marketing and making the most profit on each card sold. Makes no sense for AMD to pay to fabricate a ton of these high end cards and sell them cheap when they can make a few and sell them for much more money and make a much easier profit. That is the way that I see it. They have different cards for different incomes and all of them make max profit for AMD.

If it matches a GTX580 and uses far less power, I might be interested.

Could someone explain to me how a chip that is faster than a GTX 580 and uses less power and still costs $50 cheaper is a bad deal?

7970 is balls fast, even on a beta driver. It costs $50 more. It's really not a bad deal at all. The driverheaven 7970 crossfire benchmarks completely hammered the GTX 580 in SLI. Hammer it to the point of 7970 min FPS sometimes equaling average GTX 580 SLI FPS.

Everyone is used to AMD giving cards away. That's not the case anymore. AMD finally has a card that is great for gaming and will hopefully be able to be used better than the VLIW5 and VLIW4 GPUs when it comes to GPGPU.

Why does nvidia get to charge to charge a ton of money and people buy it like crazy but when AMD does it it's a ripoff?

It's all about expectations. AMD has taken the smaller, cheaper, approach lately (by design or by necessity), and that is what people have gotten used to and come to expect from them. Changing your marketing/product strategy always causes angst. Five years ago no one blinked when ATI charged premium prices.

FWIW I think the GTX580 is a rip off too :p At least here in Australia, I'm not sure about US pricing, but it just doesn't seem worth the price increase for the performance increase you get. That's why I wouldn't buy one even though I could afford one. Its also one of the reasons why I feel AMD and nVidia are price fixing.

AMD has built their video card market by offering great performing cards at prices that more gamers can afford. The high price is not welcome by their established market.

the 7970 is the flagship - never meant for the majority of gamers

be patient

A 7950 is still cheaper and outperforms a GTX 580. They haven't changed at all. Did you guys really expect a card to be faster than a GTX 580 and cost $200 less?

Everyone on this forum loves to talk about how BD is going to kill AMD and they're fucked, and then they release a product where they want to make money off of it for a change and everyone is pissed off. AMD has a very good product with a lot of innovative features (6 monitor support, zero core, incredible overclocking) and they have every right to charge what they are. They're going to gain marketshare whether they sell a 7970 for $550 or $350 regardless, and they know it.

If you have an issue with 7970 being $550, get a 7950. It's going to cost $450 and it's going to be equal to or faster to a GTX 580 which costs $50 more. AMD hasn't completely let everyone down this round, and once nvidia stops dropping prices both of AMDs cards will get reasonable.

We still haven't seen nVidias reaction. They might make a move pricewise on their end once AMD's cards actually hit stores, prompting AMD to follow.

Why would AMD price the card at $350, that would cannibalize the 6970, which is still selling quite well... and it's obviously a very capable card.

Yes, the 79xx 3GB may be questionable from a value perspective if you are running 1200p or lower resolution. At that res, most games can be maxed out with absurd amounts of AA (even SSAA) with the current generation of cards.

If you ask me, AMD is merely positioning its lineup differently. It now has an ultra high-end lineup of cards for the people running multiple monitors or 1400p+. I'd wager $450 isn't a tough ask for anyone in that segment. It looks like the upcoming HD7890 in Q2 2012 will effectively replace the HD6970.

I would expect them to basically shift them into the same slots as their 6970/6950 currently occupy, not price them far more expensively. I buy AMD's GPUs because they're best-of-class performance for an excellent price. The 4000 series rocketed them back into the market and they've maintained this growth throughout the 5000 and 6000 series because of reasonable pricing. A 6970 is just slightly behind the 580 in some cases (better in others, equal in still others...) for a huge price difference. I don't want to see AMD starting to overcharge on their GPUs to make up for their CPU flop. Keep undercutting and adding better features compared to Nvidia and providing near-to-better performance for a lot less and they'll continue to grow. They'd even make even more lowering the cost of the 6000 series a bit and thus watching many pick up second cards for CrossFireX. Most users with high end 6000 series cards, especially multiples, are pretty content - great cards for great prices etc.... they aren't going to convince a lot of upgrades by upping the price.

amd will price the 79XX at 550 and 450 because they can. with the 4000, 5000, and 6000 series nvidia had faster cards and they set the price. with the 79XX card amd will have the fastest cards out and they can set the price. why would they low ball themselves? it just doesnt make sense. people will buy these card no matter what they cost.

if nvidia comes out with a card tomorrow (yeah right) that was faster then the 79XX then they would be reduce the price. until nvidia releases a card faster then a 79XX card, these prices will stand.

I rather get a 580 rather than a AMD card that is comparable in performance.
Matching Nvidia for $450 isn't good enough.

I think you guys are starting to see why people bought AMD cards in the first place. Price. Not nessasrily because they had an overwhelmingly better product.
Now that they have entered in Nvidia territory, many AMD customers will start consider Nvidia for their next GPU upgrade. 7970 vs GTX 780 at nearly the same price, I'll choose the 780 every time.

QFFT. This is what I keep trying to get across to people on here, for the same price, a lot of people, myself included would much rather have an NV card. Oh, but it's slightly faster than the year old 580, golly gee, of course amd should jack up the price by $200! FFS...

I'm pretty sure that based on the price of the 7990, it is only going to be the speed of 2 7950's. Following the same performance scale of the 5970 (2x5850's). If the 7990 is the same speed as 2 7970's very few people will consider running 7970's in crossfire as it would cost them an additional $200 for relatively the same performance.

I really, really don't get why everyone's pissed off. If you don't want a card @ the $550 price point, buy something cheaper. It's that simple.

I don't get it either, the 7970 is effin expensive, but so is a 580. The 580's price/performance isn't very good and never was, and now AMD put out a faster card for the same price, hence better price/performance. I don't understand the uproar.

AMD knows where to price their cards, at release especially there will be a fairly limited supply, they don't want to price them where demand will be so high they cannot keep up. Also they need to continue selling their current gen 40nm chips for quite a while I am sure, and need to remain profitable there as well.

You done crying yet? First off, the 7970 is about 20% faster than a overclocked 580 and cheaper. It also, is probably 30-40% faster than a stock 580, and only $50 more. So it isn't "slighty " faster as you put it...How does it benefit the company financially to sell a card that is 40-60% faster than a 6970, for $350? I mean, it just makes no sense. If you would rather have a NV card, then why are you even posting in this thread? This card is a beast at stock and sources are saying it has ton of overclocking headroom. If you want premium, you have to pay the premium price. NV has been selling vid cards for years at high prices, and now the roles have switched. Just quit crying about it and buy it if you want it or wait, stop coming on here crying about a price that is actually fair.

Amen, brutha!

The REASON why the 6970 was priced at $349.99 was because its performance fit right between the 570 and 580. AMD couldn't have priced it higher and expected it to sell.

The 7970 is in a class of it's own. It's 20% faster than a 580 3GB and costs the same. And people are angry at AMD! LOL. :D

I'll be getting one to replace my 5870 since I game on a U3011. Don't expect the price to drop much. If anything, the price will go UP soon after release and remain there for a while like the 5870 did.
