im trying to decide whether i should buy a 4870 or a 5770. from what ive seen the 4870 comes out ahead in most games. im upgrading from a HD 4850 and im only playing on dual 1280x1024 monitors so either card shouldnt be a problem. so which one should i pick? i can get a HD 4870 for 129.99 in new egg or a HD 5770 for 159.99 but i dont think that its worth the extra 30 dollars cause its not even faster than the HD 4870. now i know why u guys ask why i wont upgrade to a HD 5850. well my PSU is only an Antec power trio 430 which has 32 amps in its 12v rails and has up 85 percent efficieny well i dont think that its enough to power a HD 5850. so which one should i pick out of the two?

What is your 4850 too slow to do? A 4870 will just be a slightly faster card. The 5770 actually has a few new features the 4870 doesn't, like supersampling, directx 11 support, etc.

The 4870 draws more power then a 5850...

Also, the 5850 idles at really low power. Something like 27W.

4870 (160W)
5850 (151W)

not to mention that a 5700 will be as fast or faster

Neither represents much of a leap from your existing 4850. IMO it'd be a waste of $$. Keep saving your pennies you're more than halfway to the price of a 5850 which would be a more justifiable expense. Given your specs I do think you could pull off the 5850 with your PSU

well idk its because my HD 4850's been artifacting in fallout 3 with these weird white blocks whenever HDR is enabled, but when its not it perfectly runs fine. so im thinking that my card might be dying. so i figured that the 4870 would do me justice since its relatively cheap and its still an upgrade from what i have. but i guess if what you guys said was true then ill just have to save more of my pennies to get that 5850. :)

This

You would have just a slight bump in performance and that is not enough to justify droping $160 on a card when you can save 100 xtra bux and get a LARGE bump in performance

Power consumption is not an excuse for not getting the 5850, because it's peak power draw is sandwiched right in-between that of a 4850 and 4870.

That is to say: if you already run the 4850, and you think your system can handle the 4870, then you can definitely handle the 5850.

When you consider the fantastic reduction in idle power, picking this up is a no-brainier.
