Howso? If the other company who suddenly decided (after their own "closed" standards got nowhere) that they're some "Open" whiteknight, and wont take it (for free), there's not much you can really do (other than pay them)...
"Competing" against a grand total of nothing (regardless to what people believe OpenCL isn't a physics API, there is no "Open" standard that would be an easy replacement, or one which wouldn't require a boatload of time+money) doesn't really help, but it has improved steadily over the years.
