Hardware raid controller died, will I have to get the same model replacement?

My srcsatawb suddenly displayed garbage instead of posting last week, and that was it, there was nothing I could do to see the controller, tried it on 3 different systems.

Anyway, I sent it off for a replacement, but have got the response the the product is out of stock, EOL and they wont be getting any more in.

Currently have a raid 5 array that is offline, and I am wondering what my options are now. I can probably find the thing in stock somewhere else, but would it be possible to buy a different model raid controller and use that, or am I "stuck" with this model until I migrate all data off it?

Check to see if that company offers a newer model that can detect the RAID array made by that old controller. Some manufacturers do this with some of their cards.

Otherwise, yeah, you might have to scrounge eBay for a replacement.

What brand/model controller is it? Without knowing that we really can't answer your question. Its best if you ask the makers but someone might have experience/know already if you give us the brand/model as the answer is it depends on brand/model, lol.

Its an SRCSATAWB. Which I believe is essentially a rebadged lsi 8708ELP. However the srcsatawb is significantly cheaper, so there would be no point in buying that one instead.

Pretty good chance that nearly every other LSI controller will detect the existing array.

LSI Logic 1078 SAS ROC controller based. Should be pretty easy to recover from.

It is an SRCSATAWB RAID controller made by Intel.

I have no idea what it stands for but it's sure a catchy name!

Well, I have decided to order an 8708em2. Hopefully it picks up the array, definitely got the same LSISAS1078 ROC.

It was £55 cheaper than the srcsatawb for whatever reason.

Any card from the same line of models should pick it up just fine. There is a good chance that newer models will as well. Most manufacturers have very good backwards and forwards compatibility (at least 3ware/Adaptec/LSI in my experience) when it comes to array portability.

:(

I finally got hold of an 8708ELP (after the em2 order fell through) from america on ebay. All told its been a month since the original problem.

Anyway, I cant seem to get this 8708ELP to post. Its giving me absolutely nothing, just like the other card. Its the same on other systems I have tried so far... (although one managed to simply hang rather than post, which atm is my best result).

I just tried a rocketraid 640 in my system, and that posts and gets into the bios fine.

So heres about all the options I can think of:
1) I have received a dud card, after the last one went dud very suddenly. (seems quite unlikely)
2) My motherboard is instantly killing the card (seems quite unlikely, and its still sending power to the card, the led on it comes on, and other PCie devices work in the same slot/s)
3) All my systems are incompatible with the card (although it doesnt explain why I was able to use the old card on this system for a good while).
4) Im incompetent and doing something wrong

I would be incredibly grateful for any help.... is there anything I could be 'missing'?
