Hard Reset - PC Exclusive FPS

The demo was alright actually, I've missed the mindless fun of blasting hordes of enemies with high tech weaponry. The game is stylish, it looks incredibly nice with a lot of detail, the blade runner feel is created very well.

It's like serious sam meets blade runner but requires a bit of extra thought because the harder parts (even on just normal setting) require you to really use the environments to your advantage like exploding barrels and whatnot.

One of it's massive strengths is that it's built for PC, it's high quality from the ground up, nice large FOV, no mouse acceleration, lots of graphics options including vsnc, AA and AF.

It basically ticks every box at www.pcgamingstandards.com which along with Deus Ex is actually very promising!

The price is very reasonable, I'll pick this up on steam for sure.

I've already purchased Hard Reset. After playing the demo I had zero reservations about doing so, especially considering the price. As for Deus Ex, I wasn't a fan of the first Deus Ex or the second one. I watched a friend of mine play the game on XBOX 360 this last weekend and I'm considering trying it out. Though it may not be a full priced purchase for me. I may wait.

I am with you on hard reset dan. A fine single player game. A throwback with polish and updated graphics. Me likey.

I dunno, I died playing the game on insane difficulty quite a few times and really had to make sure I used the environment and strafed and ran around a lot in order to survive.

Overall though it was a very good experience and I pre-ordered it simply due to the fact that its a proper pc game with very good performance and graphics at only 27$ if you pre-order. I really just couldn't pass this one up, most games I'll wait but these guys earned the money.

I quite liked the demo. However, the main menu animations are just way too long... cool but too long ;p
Also, the sprint blur and FoV change is bleh.
There also seems to be a bit of mouse acceleration which was kind of annoying at times.

Gameplay of me playing my first playthrough: http://youtu.be/638hDC4DncI?hd=1

Seems pretty solid. I'll pick it up next payday. I really liked the way things flowed in the gun customization screen, really intuitive use of the mouse.

This is the first thing that really stood out to me and I dont really know why. It just feels right. For 27 bucks you cant pass this up.

I just tried this on my x220 i7-2630M convertible tablet with its standard SB HD 3000 graphics and the benchmark yielded an average of 23.4 FPS at medium settings @ 1366x768 with it's which doesn't sound all that great but the game played well, was enjoyable and still looked pretty good. It looks like this engine scales well.

Nice, only you would benchmark it on a tablet :)

Nice, only you would benchmark it on a tablet :)

Not really, you might be surprised by how many people look at gaming performance when evaluating a Windows convertible tablet since part of the beauty of them is their functionality and flexibility. Gaming performance is one of the top questions I get asked by people looking at Windows tablets.

Wow, I got 42.9 average FPS on my rig, and my system is very similar to yours (4 GB of RAM and a 5850).

I wonder what my laptop will get when I get it back from RMA.

My CPU is at 3.4 ghz and my gpu is at 890 on the gpu, 1290 on the ram

What settings are you using to get this performance? If you're maxed out and using AA that's much better than I would have expected.

Yep everything is turned up to max using MLAA. The card itself is running @ 885/1250, will be interested to see the performance once cf scaling works.

I just love how the game atuomatically sets up everything according to your PC spec. The demo even saves progress, controls and video settings. Wuh!
4xFSAA on Ultra looks great. Played through the demo again and upgraded the weapons more.
I was able to combo kills with the environment and guns for some cool power ups and acheivements.

1. Provide demo to community
2. PC gamers love it
3. ????
4. Profit

Take note console first devs. The two games I played a demo for this week, Hard Reset and 40K, I purchased both.

Yeah I may pre-order as well, I'm trying to save right now so game purchases are on the back burner unless it's something very special.

I only brought up DE:HR because it shares the same "tailored for PC" feel that Hard Reset has, you could probably mistake DE:HR for a PC exclusive if it wasn't for a few little niggles, it's a great game for sure, you just need to be in to that kind of thing.

This game piqued my interested when they announced it. After playing the demo a couple of times, I put my preorder in.

Here's to hoping the full version doesn't disappoint.

Review from Rock, Paper, Shotgun is up.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/09/09/wot-i-think-hard-reset/

Which is infuriating, because everything that was needed for a great game was in place. Stupid, tiresome checkpointing that had ample opportunity to be fixed, combined with difficulty spikes alongside no option to turn the difficulty back up again, and what turns out to be a meaningless, repetitive romp, all squish down a really fun shooter. Many of the battles, especially early on, offer tremendous challenge, coupled with the wonderful animations and characters of the enemies. It just turns out that those few enemies are all you’ll encounter throughout, and they don’t start doing anything new at any point.

It looks utterly incredible, and deserves to be lauded for that. With so much going on at any point, it ran like a dream once I’d dropped the anti-aliasing down from an ambitious 8x. The enemy design reveals real talent behind the game, their quirky behaviour and exquisite animation constantly a pleasure. And while the levels are nothing other than a series of beautifully gloomy corridors, they’re just open enough to offer easy searches for secrets, and occasionally small arenas for extended fights.

I fought hard to like Hard Reset. But with the way it just stops before it feels like it went anywhere, everything I was forgiving as a step toward the next stage turns out to have been it. Despite having two or three hours of good fun from it, I come away without any of the fondness I’d scraped together. But good grief, the engine is remarkable, the notion was there. Maybe their next game?

TL;DR
+ Good graphics, animations, fun shooting mechanics.
- Inconsistent checkpoints with no save system, difficulty spikes, can't increase difficulty after its been lowered, repetitive, short at around 6-7 hrs.

At $27 I think we can be a little forgiving.

I still say any person that's in the mood for a good old school style FPS in new school trappings has a no brainer purchase to look at here.

Something like this again puts the spotlight on other developers who put out $50-$60 games that frankly have less and do less and come out less polished or even broken like Dead Island, for example.

I'm all too happy to support the likes of this.

Played the demo, story's probably nothing to pay attention to, but I'll definitely buy the game once it drops under the $20 mark.

6-7 hours single player and no multi player is not that much for $27 though. The reviewer from rock paper shotgun nailed the review. I felt the same way about the game and couldn't understand all of the hype surrounding it on the forums.

I really can't disagree with any of the points in that review. Certainly if this thing were north of $40 I'd be waiting but I'm just not feeling too bad about throwing out some support under that $30 mark.

I have a little time to think about it.

Generally agree with this review though the only serious problem I have with the game is the lack of quick saving which is pretty tough to understand considering that it's a PC exclusive. I had to play the end of the demo a couple of times to get through it, a bit frustrating but still I just love the shooting in this game, I can forgive just about anything when the shooting in a game is fun.

Eh, the reviewer from RockPaperShotgun was probably a horrible FPS player who doesn't really like old school challenging games. I played through the demo on insane just fine and it was a great experience. I thought most of the annoyances many people posted just weren't an issue for me.

I already pre-ordered it so I look forward to playing it all the way on insane the first time I get it. The Demo took me 32 minutes to complete so I think the full game will probably last around 10 or so hours. Not bad by any means for 27$ and I think I would definitely like to see what else flying wild hog can produce, so they definitely get my support. Most other games I'm happy to wait on but a few I will support more then that.

Indeed. $27 isn't going to make or break my ass and I think it's a good value for what it is. I want to support the likes of this out of principle.

I enjoyed the demo. Was it perfect? Of course not. I knew what I was going to get going into it and I got it. Old school with some new school slickness.

If this thing were north of $40 or so I'd be thinking they'd be pushing it. I got the idea that if it does well enough there's going to be some support and possibly even additional content.

I've seen many full price games only last about as long but then again I actually really enjoy hard games and actually have completed a few insanely hard games like Maximum Carnage.

Exactly. For $27 I'm going to be fairly forgiving anyways. I didn't have any performance issues, menu switching issues, weapon switching issues or anything. Fast, smooth, and easy for me. Q and E. Piece of cake.

I was overall pretty impressed with what I saw in the demo myself.

I personally didn't even think the demo was super difficult though even though you need to use the environment to your advantage, Stalker SOC with the Oblivion Lost mod has definitely got to be the hardest game I've ever completed and that was on the easiest difficulty level the entire way through.

I haven't played the demo... could you give me a little bit of insight into the game? Watching videos, it looked like there wasn't a lot of variety. Is that correct? What are the weapons like (it looked like only 2 in the video)? Are the environments varied and can you use them in different ways to fry the baddies??

Run'n'gun mostly.

Everyone has said the demo is very short and brief vs. the final game where I would expect to see more level variety.

What are the weapons like (it looked like only 2 in the video)?

Two very distinct weapons in the demo that handle different kinds of enemies and environmental considerations.

In the demo to a limited degree. I'd expect this to expand maybe a little more in the final game.

Download the demo. That's the best way for you to know.

Thanks for the info! I would like to do the demo, but I am really busy right now.... it was easier just to bug you!

I think if you go in not expecting the Second Coming of run'n' gun shooters you'll probably be happy with it.

If you even like run'n'gun shooters, that is. ;)

Another review here clocks in the game at under 4 hours from start to finish.

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/h...011/09/09/an-afternoon-of-sci-fi-carnage.aspx

The review says it's a damn fine run & gun fps game, but incredibly short.

If it's the black bars all over the screen I had that to. Disable any AA or AF you might be running in CCC to resolve.

Yup, this was the problem. Was able to play it after turning off AA and AF.

Very disappointed to hear this has no multiplayer. I've been dying for a new arena style shooter in the same vein as Quake and UT for some time. Was hoping this would scratch that itch.

I enjoyed the demo, I loved the atmosphere and gfx, the weaps had a nice feel to them, i'll pick it up one day when its on the cheap

Sounds like the reviewer didn't appreciate getting his ass kicked by the game.
More personal complaints than general. I'll man up and play it on Insane.

Awesome! I got check out that tablet. I think it will be really playable at 1024x600 low. Any hope that the HD3000 can be overclocked?

Yeah, whenever a game's main complaint comes down to difficulty my first thought is "FUCK YES!". I get so sick of all the braindead easy games these days.

Insane wasn't even that hard. I chose Insane right away as my first playthrough and it was very enjoyable. I just hope the full game ramps up on the difficulty a lot more, though.

I wonder who idea was it to not have a hand on the weapons.
The machine gun is pretty huge to hold it by the pistol grip.

Also two weapon MP would probably get boring fast.
Maybe they release a MP expansion with more weapons.

I know that my system is a bit outdated (Q6600, etc.) but do you guys think it's my 4 GB of RAM that's holding me back? I'm wondering why I can't match the guy with the Q6600 and a 5830 at the same resolution/settings.

Your CPU maybe. Or maybe he did not turn on FSAA?

My results with i5 2500K + 5850 OC

Ultra settings 1680x1050

4X FSAA: 60.8 fps

MLAA: 110.7 fps

FXAA: 118.5 fps

4 hours on the easiest settings is still way longer then most true old-school games. I think to play it on insane will take at least 10 hours or more due to all the dying going on and the fact that the ten minute demo took me a good 30 minutes to figure out and that's probably some of the easiest parts of the game.
