Good news: Its Friday.

Bad news: My clients will be shut off this weekend. Trying to cut back on some power consumption. All electronics have been put on a power strip, all power strips have been turned off when said electronics are not in use. Figured I would kill my comps for the entire weekend. Save some cash.

So, plans for the weekend anyone?

:eek::( off.... off..... but.... I'm not sure you will even notice on your power bill... I might be wrong... maybe 5 bucks a month?

I too have put some serious thought into at least backing down my overclock a bit. It is getting hot in my bedroom with the computer going all the time. It felt so good in there when I got home from work yesterday because the power had gone out yesterday morning (4th time in the last few weeks). Maybe I will just have to move it out into another room, closer to the thermostat.

Today marks the beginning of summer flex time where I work. Optionally, if you work 9 hours mon-thurs, on Friday you can come in at 8 and leave at noon.

I will be leaving at noon. :D

I know I know. I am not just stopping folding. I am doing that, powering off all power strips when not in use, kicking up the AC to around 78 when not at home, making sure lights are off before leaving: All the "greeny" stuff :)

My boxen don't even work in that positition (pun intended) ;)

Now for the dumb question, what other electronics are we talkin' about? IMO it's a good idea to just have the folding boxen, modem (DSL/cable) and router on one "surge protector", no monitor, nothin' else (I've seen the results using a Kill-o-Watt meter ;)). Then just run the boxen, sans monitor, and it shouldn't make that much difference on your light bill (depending on the type of boxen and the number of boxen you run 24/7, like was said above, $5 bucks, low ballin' :rolleyes:). (that's what I do with my 3x lowly 24/7 folders) :p

I don't know what the new LCD monitors draw, I know for a fact the old CRT monitors (like I have, a Samsung SyncMaster 20GLsi) pull "mucho watto's" (a bunch) :( I try to keep it in the "off" positition as much as possible :D

I was in no way tryin' to mind your business, I was just adding my simple opinions. If you feel shutting down your boxen is appropriate for your situation then "so be it".

+1 for the kill-o-watt

I need to grab one next time they are on sale at the egg.

I'll switch a quad over for a month to ya if you save more than 10 bucks on your power bill turning that stuff off for the weekends. (probably need the kill-o-watt to verify that savings came from there, and not the A/C running less :confused:)

 
I just move computers around the apartment and this saves me money. In the winter, the computers are in the coldest room which is the living room and close to the thermostat. With most if not all the computers in there, it keeps the room much warmer than normal which in turn keeps the furnace from running even half as much and the computers use less power than the furnace. This also helps with nice overclocks.

Now that it's warming up I need to get the boxen moved to my bedroom and my son's bedroom. Those rooms stay much cooler in the summer so the a/c won't run as much. Again, I save a bit of money. All of this while keeping all my systems going.

Sure, this won't work for everyone, but it might spark an idea so someone may not have to shut down a box.

78? Hell, I wish I could do that. Mine usually stays around 80 or above to save a bit on the electric bill. I could drop that down but my apartment has shit for insulation. Thermostat is set for 70 in the winter and 80 in the summer. I'm just glad the bedrooms hold their temperature better.

 
Oh and this isn't just for the weekends, it will be hopefully for a few weeks (I will start folding up on Monday), the lights lamps, monitors and LCD's will be switched off while at work.

Smoke I don't want to hear it... you already know where Carmen San Diego is, the actual construction details of a Pentium MMX all the way to C2D's, AND how to help me with my electrical.

What more do you want from me!! :(
 
I for one support you Shambler. I think everyone here understands, they are just giving you a good ribbing for it. I know what it is like to have to pinch pennies and i realize every little bit helps when it comes to bills. Hopefully all of your effort pays off. Good luck. I am sure everyone will be looking forward to your return.

 
Yep, and I plan to make up for this as well. The next 6 months will be interesting. I am going to E2180 machine soon (clocked of course)... and eventually upgrade that to a Q6600. That, plus a Nahelem machine once that hits normal prices. So, my points will be respectable soon :)

Side note: My P4 machine is dying... and I'm kind of happy about that :)

I have a q6600 on the way, a L737A off of Fleabay for my first dedicated folder build. Thinking about Abit Ip35 pro or quadGT.

Actually, you forgot the P54C processors. Those were the original Pentium CPUs prior to the addition of MMX instructions and a small bit of on die cache. The Pentium MMXs were P55C actually. :p

Then you can move even farther back to the 486 days, SX, DX, SLC, DX2, SLC2, DX4, overdrive processors. Then there were math coprocessors as well as 386s. :eek:

My new motherboard and case are out for delivery as I type this, so if everything goes well I'll be bring my new Server 2008 Lab/Folding PC online this weekend. I also will probably tear down my main PC for the second time this week and rotate the heatsink (Noctua NH-C12P) as it isn't performing well in its current position.

Good luck with your efforts to cut back though, it's not easy being green.

 
You need to work out your Points per Watt for all your computers you have running.
Once you know that, you can work out is it better to shut all off over the weekend or only run some 24/7.
My farm is getting to be as lean as possible without spending maga-bucks.
My average is very close to 22.5 Points per Watt.

Just picked up a new toy.
A Skulltrail MoBo, 1x E5450, 4x 2Gb DDR2-FB 800 ram, 2x TRUE heatsinks and a 3870 vid card.
The store lost the other E5450's somewhere in the wharehouse so its going to be shipped to me.

I'll swop out my slowest X5355 box for this one.
Hopefully once its built and the clients installed, I'll go fron a 6K PpD box pulling ~360 watts to a 10K box pulling ~360 watts.

You should save a bunch power just switching to a E2160.

For me the A/C made the most difference... Last summer I made the mistake of leaving it set to 74 (while not home, usually ~ 68-71 while home) for a whole month... Bill was like $330 that month... Just pushing it to 78 (while not home, kept the at home temps the same) dropped the bill to like $250 the next month (July/August... August is one of the hottest months here in D/FW area).

Shutting down my quad for most of April and May saved me maybe ~ 10-15... If that. Of course, I totally understand why you're doing it :)

As to plans... Get my quad hackintosh folding... Reinstall my media box with vista and a new TV card... Borg the GF's machine...



 
If you really want to save a couple bucks on electricity, I have in my possession a pair of Apple ][gs's that I will trade for two of your power hungry systems that would be an upgrade from an Athlon XP 1900+.

Rumor has it that FLECOM gains nearly all of his production off of a single ][gs with the Applied Engineering FastMath coprocessor. Since he won't tell me how he does it, both of these are of no use to me. Maybe if you ask him nicely or your leet hacking skills are better than mine.... :D

Either way, my offer remains on the table until such time someone takes me up on it.
