[H] users 7970 Overclock Results thread

its a bit of both actually, ive heard good and bad...

try 12.2 out, worth a try, especially for the ef 2.0 features..

just run atiman uninstaller 1st to clean out the junk...

ive learned over the years, that most peoples problem with drivers is user error, not the drivers themselves..

Anyone else having problems with sort of throttling?.
Yesterday i ran 3dmark11 for 3 times and i got around 9100 score (9000) graphics score.
1 hour later without powering off the system i ran the benchmark again and i got 7700 graphics score. I checked cpu core speed (this is always good even when benching stays 4.5ghz) Gpu and memory speed stay the same(1125/1450). Temps are within range around 65c degrees. I also tried with stock clocks but that makes it even worse. So i thought it was maybe drivers so i used driver sweeper and reinstalled framework after that i reinstalled drivers. Problems still persist. I also have power control on 20% and setting it on -20% or 0% doesnt fix the problem. I seriously hope someone can help me out because its pretty annoying. Vantage also dropped from 31000 tot 26000 and battlefield 3 gives me 10 less fps. Hope to hear from someone soon.

Yes, I'm was having issues with the power slider not actually taking changes. I just reinstalled 7 and used the CD drivers this time, instead of the DLed ones. I'll test it out here soon.

Which drivers are you using?

Hi saftrafton that makes me feel comfortable somebody else is having the same problem. Im using the drivers from ati.com site from 1/9/2011.
Maybe the drivers from cd fixes the problem.

They just worked like a charm for me, but I also reformatted this morning. Can't say if it's the driver package or the clean install that did it. Give it a shot after doing the ATI Install Manager express uninstall of all ATI drivers and see if it works. Maybe I just wasted 3 hours :)

I'm going to try with sapphire drivers if that doesnt fix it clean install with windows.

So far everything looks 5x5 with the CD drivers. Time to DL BF3 and give it a shot. I'm really curious to hear how your's goes, I'd like some reassurance that the AMD Install Manager uninstaller is actually thorough enough to be relied on.

Stock Voltages

Skyrim crashed to desktop at 1.1GHz. It made me a little sad that I couldn't max the slider on CCC. I'll probably do some voltage tweaking over the weekend to see how much more I can push this thing.

Also, am I supposed to have high idle temperatures when running 3 monitors? My card idles at 400MHz and has an idle temperature of 60C for both stock and OC. At OC load, it goes to ~72C for Skyrim and 87C for Furmark.

How much do you got with 3dmark 11 Now graphics score with oc?

I'll get you a before and after sometime this afternoon, I haven't got my CPU OC turned back up yet (one BSOD on an OCed Windows install 6 years ago and to this day I still don't trust it) and I need to finish DLing the BF3 installer before I get to 3dmark.

Sure its ok. Im going to be home in like 2 hours then im going to start removing driver and install cd drivers.

I seem stable at 1125/1575 with 60% fan speed. I could probably turn fan speed down a little, I was at 64c in BF3 after playing for 2 hours. Of course its really cold in my house today...

yes, thats normal. running more than one monitor causes the card to run at a higher idle clock.

Well I have similar setup but @ 3.4 and I'm getting P7537 w/ GPU @ 1125/1575.

Gonna try again on OC my cpu see if I can go any higher w/ different settings.

Stable Overclock Results

Core: 1175
Mem: 1750

Voltage: 1.181
(Stock 1.175)

Question... Do you all think there is a difference between memory at 1575 or 1750. My voltage is only bumped the smallest amount possible. I want to keep voltage close to stock lile this. I wont go higher.

Stable on Heaven, 3DMark11, BF3, Metro 2033.

Temps at 71c at 45% fan...

*EDIT* just for the curious, ~9600 3dmark with i5 2500k.

Anyone got a link to the new TriXX? The download page doesn't say anything about 7970 support, I feel like there's a beta floating around that everyone is using?

My CF setup won't take 1125/1575 at stock voltages, I feel like the last kid to get picked at kickball.

I'm at 1000/1425 for now and it works great. That's XFX BEDD clocks, so I'm OK with that for now.

Problem is even worse now with sapphire drivers. I got 7944 score now in 3dmark 11 and around 7941 graphics score while it was 9000. It also seems that powertune doesnt affect anything. Maybe powertune does not work with my card or something?

Ya, could be a CPU issue. I also have an i7 920, and I got a score of ~P7800 with GPU at 1075/1575. Them people with Sandy Bridge seem to be posting much higher numbers.

I got 7900 with sandybridge on 4.5 ghz -_- fucking crap. While it was 9000 its so annoying

Looks like 1060 MHz might be the highest stable clock for my card, I ran a Bitcoin miner @ 1075 (which was stable in all games) and was getting some hardware errors. Backing down to 1060 fixed that.

Kind of disappointed I wasn't able to max CCC sliders, still a decent OC overall for stock volts though...

The way this card OCs is interesting though. On cards in the past when I've went above the threshold for stable overclocking it'd usually lock up, that doesn't happen with the 7970. I can go up to 1125MHz on stock volts but only one game (The Witcher 2) produces flickering textures and the Bitcoin miner throws errors every now and then.

^^^ Just ignore the "combined" score guys.

People with faster CPU's will indeed have a higher combined score. Single out the graphics score to see how your setup is doing.

haha....you may have made a noobie mistake.
When you first install the drivers clean, you may have forgotten that Anisotropic filtering is set to application controlled, and texture quality is set to medium (Quality). Did you by any chance move texture quality to "High quality" and force AF to 16x? Doing that knocked my graphics score from 9469 (at 1150/1575) to 8300.

Reinstalling the drivers keeps the old direct3d settings, if I recall, unless you do a full wipe.

I hit the Overdrive max easily but I haven’t begun to fiddle with any better oc tools. Which programs actually have 7970 support as of yet?
And 12.2? I have the drivers from the disk installed because none of the other drivers I could download seemed to download properly. They were constantly corrupt. The drivers on the disk work flawlessly and I have no issues. It’s just I know AMD has probably released some newer drivers.
Amazing jump from CFed 6870s. Holy crap.

i'm also unable to max the CCC sliders. right now my card is stable at 1100 core but i wouldn't be surprised if i expose an instability at some point and have to back it down.

8.95=12.2..

im curious as well

I have them downloaded but don't wanna go through the 20 minute hassle of putting the CD drivers back in if they don't work. Someone else with xfire please Guenna pig them for us. :D

unfortunately, someone else s success or failure isnt definitive for you

you'll have to try yourself

However, i cannot insist strongly enough to use the atiman uninstaller prior to trying them.

These betas tend to act wonky if your system inst squeaky clean of ATI leftovers and Driver sweeper is not up to the task...

Never was able to get atiman to install so I'm stuck with driversweeper for the time being. Honestly it's worked pretty decently for me.

Just got my Tri-Fire 7970s setup, had to reinstall the drivers upon booting up, but I'm using the download drivers with the newest application CAPS.

Running 3DMark 11 now, will attempt overclocking later.

Sapphire card running 1100/1600 on stock volts. Fan set to auto and idles around 50C and heavy gaming gets to about 80-82C.

I was on the fence if I was ready to upgrade from my 5850. This card is an absolute beast!
