GTX260 artifacts...

I'm resurrecting an old PC
everthing seems okey, except for the vid card, an old Geforce GTX260.
I've tested it with two different PSUs and after a couple of minutes in a 3D game I get something like this

The card was working fine when I stop using it a couple years ago. I put it back together (it was disassembled) put the heatsink back on and the thermal pads seem a little bit worn though. I've try 80% fan speed, but still the same problem

Overheating, dead card or faulty PSUs?
No problem in 2D though (videos, flash, etc)

I figured that but sometimes people do not.

It does not look power related (ususually just single vertical lines discolored). Looks more like a severely dying GPU.

How was the card stored for all these years?
 
Just bake the card..got my bfg for free that way since it was going to be thrown away... haven't had a problem since ( I baked @ 385 for 10 minuets)
 
That looks like a VRAM issue, I'd try checking the thermal pads between the memory modules and the heatsink first.

the thermal pads look kinda crappy. I could throw some thermal paste on them, how about that?
 
I'd bake it, but there was a conflict with your username in our previous encounter. Also have you felt the PCB near the RAM to see if it's really hot to the touch. If they are, then that may be the reason why it starts acting like this. (Flash is a joke to render)
 
Ok, I've baked the card. 285ºF for 10 minutes, finally it pays off to watch Hell's Kitchen :cool: (It's raw!!) I've clean the thermal pads, and screw everything back together tighly

I'm posting this from the problematic PC, 2D appears to work pretty good, now I'm gonna test 3D. Wish me luck!

It's hot, but for what I remembered that is normal. And no i haven't checked temps

What would be a cheap card to replace it?
an GT610 or GT620?
I just want a performance similar (or better) to the GTX260
 
Could be static electricity, people don't realize how much is around this time of year.

Yes the cards you listed are too slow compared to your GTX 260. The HD 7770 is probably the cheapest card that would be a noticeable upgrade over your GTX 260. You might be able to get away away with the HD 7750 however.

And how about the GT 630 with a 128bit bus?
I didn't know that the GTX260 could be still a good card for lower resolutions

Way slower. Considering that the GTX 260 outperforms the GT 640, it's fair to say that it'll outperform the GT 630.

The GTX260 is still kicking ass? Impressive!
I'm gonna go with a Radeon then :)
 
A GTX 460 is virtually identical to a GTX 260, a GTX 550 Ti is slightly faster, and a GTX 650 is slightly faster than a 550 Ti.
 
Have you considered purchasing a used card on craigslist? Most bang for your buck. Just a suggestion...
