Greatest Game Ever

fps-Quake 2
racing-gran turismo 3
rpg- don't play that much rpgs
action/adventure game-All of the spiros and crash bandicoots. So best games
All of the crash games on the ps1 and all of the spiro games on the ps1

Another nod for tie fighter...the missile boat was the shiznit

gotta give a nod to Starcraft too. Very few games I can recall looking up from my console and seeing daylight, and the thing that made me look up was the birdies chirping outside my window :D

Ok I'll admit...I have some others I'm fond of...in no particular order:

One Must Fall 2097
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Stargunner
Rise of Nations
Diablo 2
Command & Conquer
StarCraft
Counterstrike

Those are some games I deemed classics the instant I played them lol, but DOOM still takes my #1 :D

:D

Holy Crap I cant believe you remember that game...i forgot all about it and I used to play it all the time. Good call it was alot of fun.

I have fond memories playing King's Quests 1-3 on the PCJr way back. They rank up there for me.

Ah, the heyday of shareware. Still have full versions of them on my HDD. Both great little games.

My personal pics:

RPG: Planescape:torment - Most original, immersive RPG I've played. The story is still the best RPG plot ever written, very deep, nice plot twists, and excellent chemistry between the characters.

Flight Sim: Tie Fighter - I still hold several flight records in the Emperor's Hammer. First game that got me involved in an online guild - one that amazingly is still going. This is my biggest hope for a remake.

Adventure: Grim Fandango - One of the last great adventure games. MI 1 & 2 were good, but the original story, the fantastic imagery and general surrealism of the game make it still a great play a decade later.

Driving: Interstate 76 - Rocking the post-gaswar apocylptic desert in my Piranha. Pumping 70's soundtrack, what else do you need?

FPS: System Shock 2 - First game to truly make the hair on the back of my neck standup. And contains the greatest videogame villian - Shodan.

Online: Everquest - No game has sucked away more of my soul than this. Raiding the planes with Clan Twisted was some the most enjoyable times I've spent playing a computer game. I still get the itch to log in from time to time...but you can never go home again.

Oh man, I wasted hours upon hours in OMF 2097. Not only did I have the tournament editor, but I also used Norton Utilities 4.5 to hex edit saved characters: level 30 stats = one hit kill :D

lol it's good to see there are still OMF fans out there...

ye, OMF 2097 sucked so much life outta me when i was like 7 :p I remember playing as Nova robot, and doin that earthquake smash move and knockin all my opponents out lol

goooooood times :D

i still play the game on occasion...i play it on DosBox and my old gravis gamepad

The original Super Mario Bros.
Most memorable moment of the game for me was finally getting the 1-up trick down on World 3-1. :D

Super Mario RPG (Fun as hell :p)
Kingdom Hearts II (I love it...)
Secret Of Mana & Seiken Densetsu 3 ( not much to say here :p )
Zelda 64 (both) & LTTP
Halo (Fun :p )
Doom (revolutionary :p)
Star Trek Bridge Commander (I scare people in this game.)
3DMark2005 (YEAAAAAAAAAAA EVERYONE PLAYS 3DMARK!!!!! sorry i had to say it...)
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics (In order ^^ )
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth (built on the tactics engine, its fun and impossible to find 0_0)
Metroid Prime and Prime 2 :D :D :D

all i can think of right now...

M.U.L.E.
Below the Root
Ultima3
Alien Breed ( Amiga version roxxed )
Hoover Boover
Potty Pigeon ( C-64 version )

Hey I play the cow game in 3DMark 2001 all the time! Quick, Simple, and Fun!

Ok here are mine.

FPS = Thief the Dark Project
RPG = Azel: Panzer Dragoon Saga
Shoot-em-up= Thunderforce 4
RTS = Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour
Beat-em-up = Soul Calibur

But the altogether greatest game ever is simply NiGHTS into Dreams. Pure class and just as good looking and addictive as it was when it was released.

Its really hard to choose just one, since there have been many great and enjoyable games.

I want to name off alot and give special mention, but to say the single greatest one to me would be EverQuest. If anyone were to get a single online MMO correct it would Verant, they did such a good job of getting people into their world and addicted people started creating clinic's to get people off of their game. I have to give prop's to SOE for keeping it going, and putting out stuff like the combine servers, and spending time on that game, it really is a remarkable game and is still widely popular

it might be a little inflated as far as items goes, i can't deny that, but with the combine servers coming out and getting a chance to re-experience the greatness over again with all my old friends i had done with before, i have to say my loyalty blongs to EQ.

before battle.net... I setup a w2k adv server to allow 2 people to dial in on 2 phone lines, had 2 people besides myself on the local netword via ethernet - and routed it via ipx (what warcraft 2 used for network games) so we could have a 5 player match =) worked like a dream.

oh yea way b4 b.net...I quit b.net the time hacks came out for diablo and some f'ing loser killed my character IN TOWN by a few swings. before I knew what was happening, I WAS RAPED! ALL MY ELITE SHIT was gone and all I could do was sit there amazed  ..I never joined battle.net again I was sooOOooO pissed! if I could only meet that guy in RL. YOU WOULD DIE SON!

hehe oh well...life goes on

best: Total Annihilation
runner up: Tribes 2
honorable mention: Ultima Online T2A
honorable mention: Mechwarrior 4: Mercs

most anticipated: Supreme Commander

-Total Annihilation totally rocked, but was overshadowed by StarCraft
-Metal Gear Solid was amazing; i was at the point where i could walk you through the entire game by memory...
-Medal of Honor, the original for PS1; same situation as MGS
-TES3: Morrowind - single game i spent the most time playing, ever... like 2.5 years
-Battlefield 2 - it amazes me every time i play, seeing the world from a birds eye view in a jet? priceless
-Dungeon Lords................................. JUST KIDDING, caught yer attention there! haha

I would say Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo

Had a Great World, Story, Battle System, Characters and even the Soundtrack was great.

Yes. Interesting that buying clothes was completely optional and didn't hurt your chances of success.

My wife maid me play that game last year believe it or not! She had always brought it up for years when we were reminiscing.

You guys wanna know what actually got me playing PC games for good? It was Tron 2.0 believe it or not. I saw it on my friends PC, and I said OK PC games look better than consoles. i built my first boxen, and sold my PS2. Been playing PC games ever since.

My first game ever was Number Crunchers. We used to play it in grade school and in after school on our Apple IIGS computers. It was fantastic, and I had a competition with the teacher to see who could get the highest score back in like second or third grade.

The "Greatest Game Ever" is Final Fantasy Tactics, no doubt. I say the same thing every time I post in one of these threads because there is absolutely no game that I've encountered that has the same level of depth of story, customizability (with regard to classes and equipment), and amount of dungeons/treasures/secrets (for all of us treasure whores). Plus, it has unlimited replay value thanks to deep dungeon. You can just keep going back to those levels and everytime it's like playing a new game of chess, except with the awesomeness of spells and summons, and you can make it as hard or as easy as you want by putting your best and brightest out there to fight or the second string. I'll never get tired of it, ever.

Final Fantasy 7 wins.. hands down.
As for the most time a game has sucked away form me- Diablo2 and expansion. Spent 3x years straight playing it, doing nothing else.

Some more games listed here already I must put down as my own also :p

Metal Gear Solid, definitely. The first I ever played where I actually cared about what happened to each character.

RTCW - Nazi stomping NEVER gets old :D

Rise of Nations - IMO, greatest RTS game ever. So much depth, so much intrigue.

Soldier of Fortune 1+2: the gore level, I swear to you all, actually shocked me the first time I saw it. I was like

in no order

call of duty
god of war
rise of nations
ut2k4
aliens vs predator

Hmmm, cant believe no votes for WOW, but maybe a mmorpjhgtys or whatever the designation is...

anyway i liked diablo, i liked baldurs gate, so WOW is the best of both worlds and visually stunning to boot.
