just fyi on this deal, best buy has been notified of that... so be careful.. besides after my experience last night trying to get my deal on the 32 inch aquos, I am not shopping there again!

so last night, for the first time (temporarily), i unhooked my 8800gtx from my Dell 2405fpw and then into my 37" 1080p westy... OH... MY... GOD!!! It's so damn crisp... I'm actually astonished... I feel like it can't be any crisper... I'm not joking..
And, the Westy is much brighter than my Dell ultrasharp... (yes, the ultrasharp is still a nice monitor, but DAMN!)
i got the westy a few weeks ago and have had it up as my TV, and hopefully soon will replace my 2405fpw
g0dM@n:
LOL. I'm just wondering how you manage to resist the temptation for so long.
The westy was probably like:
"Damn it, what took you so long? What's so good about Dell, uh, uh, uh, uh? Guezz, I should of fried your GTX for the miserable and painful SD channels you put me through. But worry not, BEHOLD, for I, would show you the light bitches. Hell yeah, 1080p mofo, all me, oh yes. Who's your daddy now?"
I didn't know the Westy was such a smack talker......
Anyone have a 8800GT running with this screen? Thinking about either getting that or the HD3870 from ATi.
I've had my eyes on this one for a while now and I'm finally in a buying position. Problem is that it's no longer offered anywhere locally so I'm stuck with either buying through an e-tailer and going for the luck of the draw, or getting the 42" Westinghouse locally at BB. Which makes returns/exchanges much easier.
So the question for all you 37W3 users (or the 42" for that matter). When the likely price difference between the two is going to be ~$200 and the sole intention for use is as a computer monitor, which one should I be gunning for? I'd rather the 37W3 because it has a higher DPI and therefore sharper picture at closer distances, but none available locally so I get the luck of the draw ordering online. Or the 42 from Best buy, where I may not get the top image quality, but do end up with more real estate and better return options... Arrrggh! I can't decide!
I see a ton of happy people with the 37W3, but am just worried about having to do any sort of returns! Any e-tailers that have good policies for things like this? (can't forget that extended warranty either!). Thanks!
use next day shipping. you'll pay less than the pain+aggravation of packaging things back in and securing it enough to ship it back.
my decision was simple: i want a hugeass screen and i wanted to watch a lot of movie/TV material and occasionally game. this achieves all those goals with flying colors. if you want to game-ONLY... i'd recommend the dell 3007whpf$*)(@#*$@# the higher color depth version.
newegg seems to finally be selling the westy 37 at the costco price of last summer at 800, though at 860 shipped it ends up being about 30 bucks cheaper due to no tax.
When I got my 42 TX it was selling officially for 1150 w/ coupon and tax it came down to 1062. Compared with the costco deal at the time thats about a 170 difference for including tuners + another 5 inches. Not a tough choice IMO (if only looking at westinghouse that is).
Currently at 990 w/ 10-12% BB coupon the deal is even better, and the price difference compared to newegg is a mere $55 (915 for the 42 TX vs 860 for the 37")
Well.. g0dM@n, I'd say your right, it probably will come down to personal choice. Flipping a coin is about as close as I'm going to get as to a real decision at this point.
Jedi, The Dell 3007 is a beauty, but I know my system can't handle that res. I've only got a single 8800GT so 2560x1600 is simply out of the question. I'll definitely have my eye on that in the future though!
To clarify, I'd use this mostly for gaming, probably no more than 2-3 feet away, as well as general desktop applications, movies, etc. The ability to read text at this distance is critical, especially coming from a Dell 2001FP and the Westinghouse 22W (whichever one was at the BB Black Friday last year) Due to my paranoia of dead pixels and screen defects (hey, it's a big investment for me!) I'd likely be getting an extended warranty. Though after a bit of consideration, I think there's a good way for me to figure this out and just get the 42 from best buy, try it out for a bit and if it does the trick, keep it. If not and I don't like the clarity or the sharpness of the DPI then I can return it and throw the dice for one from newegg, ecost, or whatever other e-tailers have them.
I've got a friend with the 37W3, I may have to take a trip with my box down there this weekend and try that out as well...
Thanks for the feedback, and keep it coming, once I figure this out I'll let everyone know how it goes and post some pictures!
no1's telling ya to game ONLY @a display's native resolution. displays DO accept several modes of input. you can play @19x12 until $100 video cards can support 10 panels worth of 25x16 resolution displays, etc. it's simply FUTURE-proofing yourself if you game a lot. we're going to scale upwards in terms of resolution when it comes to games. it'll continue to be that way for the time being. starcraft is still 800x600 or somn. now starcraft2 (similar to wacraft3) is going to be any d3d resolution (even 25x16). it's just the way of the times.
while w3 is definitely a monitor and you can use it for a variety of things, its intention is for users who watch HDTV because of the 16:9 AR. 16:10 is ok for multiple other gaming uses, but 16:9 is movie/TV-oriented.
dell@lower res. won't be ghosting or anything. it was MADE to support a variety of stuff.
For me the total would come to $970 after the 10% and taxes. Washington state taxes are steep!Wow... I didn't know the 42 TX could be had that cheap... at a $55 difference, I'd say it's a no brainer...
If your friend's got a 37W3, what are you waiting for? Also, if you get the 42 TX, you probably won't be happy by downgrading your size... you see, a couple yrs ago I bought the Dell 2005FPW for a sick deal of like $430 or so. Then a week later the 2405FPW was like $780, also a killer deal at the time. I only bought the 2405 so that I could sell it and lessen the damage of the 2005FPW.
Well, what do you think I did after playing with the 2005 when the 2405 came in? That's right, I "tried it out"... rather permanently!! So you see... that's the tough part. I say try your buddy's 37" first... you'll def like it. I'm astonished at the quality.
Alright, so I'm one of the old people that got the SE from Costco back months ago. The TV is wonderful. I ran it at 1080p off my old Toshiba laptop over VGA and it looked amazing. I finally get a new laptop (Asus G1s) and now I can't get it to run 1080p. It shows up as a Westinghouse 37W3se, so I think I dodged the apparent problem that a lot of people had with the SE, BUT... I can only get it to go to 1680x1050 (same as the laptop's lcd). The Nvidia control honestly sucks... I've dug all thru it and don't see anywhere to enable progressive scan or raise it past 1680x1050. It doesn't even show anything past that in the compatible resolutions in Display Settings.
I'm not running HDMI yet, that cable + HDMI switch are on their way from monoprice... so VGA is it for the moment. Is there some issue with this laptop + VGA that I'm not aware of? Is it the Nvidia control panel?
Thanks everyone!
The native resolution is 1920x1080... i don't see why you're trying to force 1680x1050 unless you want to dual-view (for whatever reason)
He can't get it run 1920x1080 for whatever reason, he made that pretty clear.
So I went over to a friends house and tried out his 37W3. I had to get pretty close (<1 ft) to see pixelization, so I'm fairly certian I could get away with the TX42 at a distance of 2-2.5 feet. Not to mention NewEgg killed their $200 off on the 37W3 so I'd be looking for it at onsale or ecost or something. >_< Gonna give the TX-42 a go as soon as I get the back pay I'm owed.
